Interview: 'New Moon' Screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg

While it came as little surprise to the fans of Stephenie Meyers' original books, the success of Twilight caught Hollywood and the rest of the world by storm when the first adaptation arrived in theaters late last year. A big part of the credit for the movie's crossover success must be attributed to screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg, who rendered the romance of Bella and Edward in dimensions that more than die-hards (or more accurately, Twi-hards) could understand and appreciate.

The Twilight sequel New Moon comes to theaters next Friday and offers even more tortured teenage romance than before, as well as a wealth of mythology about vampires, werewolves and other monsters that inhabit the series' supernatural universe. Cinematical recently spoke to screenwriter Rosenberg at the film's press day in Los Angeles; in addition to discussing the process of putting together a satisfying sequel, she talked about subjecting Bella to the universal disappointment of a bad break-up, and examined what audiences might take away from this latest installment in the series.

Cinematical: Is there an emotional core or some central theme that was guiding you through writing New Moon, or do you see this more as an installment in a larger narrative?

Fan Made: Sexy 'New Moon' Posters

For better or for worse, we all know that Twilight fans are a crafty bunch, and frankly it is not like there aren't a million pictures of Edward Cullen floating around the hard-drives of the series' devoted followers, so it shouldn't be that surprising that fans are already hard at work making one-sheets for the upcoming sequel to Twilight, New Moon. Over at Popsugar, two new posters for the sequel have emerged, and while Cinematical has already confirmed with Summit that these are fake, an almost-shirtless Robert Pattinson is bound to get some attention either way. Not to mention that at least these two posters are more convincing than some of the other photoshop jobs out there.

The first official teaser poster was revealed during ShoWest, and, well, other than the fact that it looks identical to the banner art we saw back in February, there is really nothing to say. I mean, how can curlicue fonts compete with shirtless glowering? New Moon will pick up with our star-crossed lovers where they left off, and the addition of the new werewolf pack and the badass Volturi means that Chris Weitz and Melissa Rosenberg will have plenty of material to work with. One thing is for sure, I hope Summit has something a little more exciting up their sleeve than what they have shown us so far, because right now it looks like fans are doing a better job of promoting this movie than they are.

Why should we care about fan-made posters? Well, why shouldn't we? After all, the only reason Twilight made it to movie screens in the first place was because of the book's die-hard fans. So while trying to get the final word on anything Twilight is no easy task (what with speculation, rumor, and blatant lies), there is plenty of time to kill before New Moon hits theaters on November 20th, so why not have a little fun first? Check out the two fan-made posters below.

Fangirls Rejoice or Rave -- Vanessa Hudgens Isn't Boarding 'Twilight' Sequel

The prospect of High School Musical star Vanessa Hudgens joining the next installment of the Twilight series, New Moon, inspired many a-commenter to weigh in last month when news hit. But it looks like the whole thing was moot -- to the point that it's quite unclear just how Hudgens could've auditioned for the role of Leah Clearwater.

See, People had a chat with Twilight and New Moon scribe Melissa Rosenberg, who said that she's not sure about the casting, but that the lady werewolf doesn't show up until the third movie. I can't imagine that they'd start auditioning for a third before the second even gets made, so something's rotten in the state of Forks.

Perhaps Hudgens is a big Twilight fan and just wanted to throw her hat in the ring, and Ashley Greene (who relayed the news to MTV) got it mixed up. Maybe she was trying to get some other role. Or maybe they just want to plan ahead a few years. Whatever the case -- New Moon is about to go into production and as far as the scribe is concerned, it's without Ms. Hudgens.

'Twilight' Sequel(s) Moving Forward!

What, did you really think they'd only make one? According to the Hollywood Reporter, Summit Entertainment has decided to hang on to the property that has made them, and, heck, why not make it a franchise? Though the first film hasn't arrived in theaters yet, initial buzz from critics isn't horrible (our own James Rocchi told me it was "pretty good"), and so Summit has gone and acquired rights to the next three novels and brought Twilight screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg in to write the screenplays based on New Moon and Eclipse. Breaking Dawn, however, does not have a screenwriter just yet. Though nothing was announced, I'd expect them to shoot two of these suckers back-to-back, but I suppose we'll see which route they take.

As you're probably already aware, Twilight mania has taken the world a bit by storm. The source material has amassed a whole ton of fan sites, the soundtrack has hit number one on the charts and the flick is certainly poised to open big. How big, we do not know, though we'll certainly be asking for your opinion at the beginning of next week -- as well as shoveling out some pretty awesome Twilight interviews; one of which might just be with a girl named Bella -- so stay tuned.

Twilight hits theaters November 21.

More Vampires! Hardwicke to Direct 'Twilight'

Growing up, I had a thing for vampires, and other ghouls of the night, but especially vamps. While adaptations of loved books only sometimes live up to the stringent expectations of a fan mind, I've always wanted to see L.J. Smith's The Vampire Diaries make it to the screen -- a good star-crossed story about a teen girl, her vampire love, and his sinister brother who comes in to make things tricky. It's never happened, but maybe there's a chance now that a newer teen love vamp story is making its way to film.

Variety reports that Summit Entertainment is going to bring Stephenie Meyer's young adult novel Twilight to the big screen. Melissa Rosenberg, who penned Step Up, is going to write the script, and they've tapped Thirteen director Catherine Hardwicke to helm it. This will be a potential franchise for the company, which president Erik Feig calls a "publishing phenomenon," since Twilight is the start of a series based on the story of a 17-year-old girl named Bella. She moves to a small town to live with her dad, "and is drawn to a pale mysterious classmate who comes from a family of vampires." Young women and pale sexy lovers -- it's a classic story, and one that should play well to teen girls with vampy daydreams.

Now c'mon Hollywood! There's always dueling pics that come out at the same time, and The Vampire Diaries have been republished, so it's high time Smith got some love! Or, just make it so I can realize it was a bad idea and move on.
