Kurt Wimmer to Write 'Metal Gear Solid'?

I want you to think all the way back to February of '07 when Sony first announced that they would be making a feature film out of the best-selling game, Metal Gear Solid. Everything seemed on track, then the writer's strike happened and it seemed Solid was going to fade away to obscurity ... or then again, maybe not. Coming Soon recently got the chance to speak with producer Michael De Luca during a press event for 21, when they scored a little tidbit about the future of the big-screen Metal Gear. According to De Luca, the project is not only back on, but they are already on the lookout for someone to write the script – namely, Kurt Wimmer.Metal Gear Solid is a stealth game released by Konami back in 1998. The story, or what little there was in the beginning, focused on a genetically enhanced soldier named Snake taking down the evil FOXHOUND. As the franchise continued, more attention was paid to the story in the game. By the third installment there was a much richer mythology surrounding political conspiracies and state of the art warfare included in the game.
When it comes to the feature film, Wimmer's involvement is far from a done deal. According to De Luca, Columbia Pictures will be meeting with Wimmer over the next few weeks to see if he is interested in taking on the script. Wimmer was the writer and director behind Equilibrium and Ultraviolet, both of which might as well have been video games, so he seems like a good fit. CS also hinted that Wimmer could be taking over directing duties for MGS as well, so stay tuned to Cinematical for any news that comes our way.
Sony Confirms That Metal Gear Solid Is Coming To Big Screen

The last time fans of a video game franchise got their hopes up about a big screen adaptation was Peter Jackson's Halo adaptation, and I think we all know how that one turned out. Sony is hoping to have better luck with a big screen adaptation of Konami's Metal Gear Solid. Variety has announced that Sony's Michael DeLuca will produce alongside game creator Hideo Kojima. Rumors of a movie version had first surfaced during the last E3 conference. During the D.I.C.E Summit in Las Vegas, Sony chair Yair Landau confirmed that a film version was in the works. The franchise has been a big seller on all three platforms and has spawned four sequels, including a new title slated for Playstation 3. The game originally centered a genetically enhanced ex-soldier in his battle against the terrorist organization called FOXHOUND. The stealth game was well-loved by gamers and praised for its cinematic imagery and characters. I guess Sony must have thought they could adapt the game with a minimum of fuss since all of the sequels in the franchise give them a few story lines to choose from. The project is only in the early stages of development, so it might be awhile until we see a writer or director attached; as long as Sony keeps a strict "No Uwe Boll" policy they should be off to a good start.
Hideo Kojima FINALLY Confirms MGS Film

News of a film adaptation of the popular video game series Metal Gear Solid has been floating around the industry for a while now, but creator Hideo Kojima had remained silent about the whole affair until this week. Kojima finally broke his presumably self imposed silence on a Japanese radio station and confirmed the existence of a deal to bring his series to the silver screen. This was about all Kojima was willing to say, however, as he then insisted he couldn't talk about details such as a possible release date. Despite a dismal track record for such films, Hollywood seems to be experiencing something of a rush on video game-based projects lately with some heavy-hitting titles on the way -- leading some to believe the negative karma surrounding the genre may be on the verge of breaking. I personally shudder (in a mostly good way) to think of the sheer wall of crazy that will be a movie script written by the insanely unpredictable mind of Hideo Kojima; the man uses plot twists as frequently as some writers use adjectives. This geek is personally holding out some hope for a good film, although I inherently distrust the thought.
