Adrien Brody and Michael Chiklis Head Back to 'High School'
Filed under: Comedy », Independent », Casting »
I already like the sound of this one: After taking a puff alongside the school stoner, a high school valedictorian decides to get the whole student body stoned, enough so for them to collectively fail the same drug test he finds himself up against.
That's the thrust behind the new comedy High School, which looks to begin production in early November, and according to this Variety notice, Adrien Brody (The Brothers Bloom) has signed on to play a drug dealer, while Michael Chiklis (Eagle Eye) will take up the role of principal, a move that'll likely play to his stoic strengths. (Bruce Willis worked wonders with a similar part in the still unreleased Assassination of a High School President; a greater pity because it's a fairly fun little flick overall.)
There is only so much else left to say about the project. It'll be directed by John Stalberg Jr., who co-wrote the screenplay with Stephen Susco (of the Grudge films) and... that's really about it for now, though -- dare I suggest -- Stalberg and Susco still have time to throw the word 'Musical' into that title somewhere and simply wait for the money to roll in. Either way, it sounds like a shortage of green will be the least of their worries.
Cinematical Seven: The Best Superhero (and Villain) Casting
Filed under: Casting », Cinematical Seven », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

I haven't seen this weekend's The Incredible Hulk yet, and will do so a little begrudgingly because it's an implicit (or explicit, depending on whom you ask) diss of Ang Lee's Hulk, a film I admire. But to the extent my interest in the Louis Leterrier version is piqued, it's mostly because of the casting of Edward Norton as the title character's alter ego. It's such an interesting choice -- partly because Norton usually stays away from projects like this, partly because he's so uniquely gifted, and partly because my mind just reels at hearing "you wouldn't like me when I'm angry" coming out of his mouth. I'll watch The Incredible Hulk less because I want to see another movie about Bruce Banner than because I'm curious to see Norton's interpretation of him.
All of which got me thinking about superhero/comic book casting in general. It's a subject that attracts a lot of breathless speculation every time a new movie is in the works, and there's rarely consensus on anything. In this edition of Cinematical Seven, I take a look back at what I think have been the most inspired, interesting, or appropriate superhero (and villain, because why not?) casting choices in recent history -- not so much the resulting performances (though it can be hard to distinguish in hindsight) but the initial casting decisions.
As I like to do with these lists, I tried to mix the obvious with the out-of-the-blue, so feel free to weigh in with what I unjustly left out. In no particular order:
Jessica Alba Talks About the Possibility of More 'Fantastic Four'

OK, correct me if I am wrong here, but did anyone really enjoy the last two Fantastic Four movies so much that a third installment is really necessary? I guess when the last film raked in $131,921,738, Fox figured they might as well take another shot. IESB recently got the chance to speak with Ms. Invisible herself, Jessica Alba, about the possibility of a third film. For those of us out there who thought the first two were a waste of time and celluloid, don't worry, it looks like we might have the writer's strike to thank for a delay. Alba tells IESB, "I know the writers strike and the impending actors strike has kind of put a wrench in everything production wise. That film takes a lot of prep, a good six months of prep and about six months to shoot. With the strike, I think, maybe it's put on hold."The first two films were directed by Tim Story, who is currently working on the feel-good sports movie, Patriots, with Forrest Whitaker. So, if a Fantastic sequel is delayed, there is still plenty of time to get Story back at the helm for a third film. News of a third Fantastic film first surfaced back in June; however, while most reports pointed towards a reunion with the Silver Surfer, Alba made no mention of it in her interview with IESB. As for the rest of the cast, Ioan Gruffudd (Mr. Fantastic), Michael Chiklis (The Thing), and Chris Evans (Human Torch), I can only assume they would all be on board for another film. As long as there is some "gold in these hills," it looks like Fox is going to milk the quartet for all they are worth.
Michael Chiklis Joins 'Eagle Eye' as New Set Pics Surface

Another actor has been added to the cast of Eagle Eye, and it's none other than The Commish, The Shield -- Michael Chiklis. The Hollywood Reporter has posted that he's signed on to play the U.S. Secretary of Defense in the thriller, which is coming our way from D.J. Caruso and DreamWorks. As you might remember, this is that weird movie that stars Shia LaBeouf and Michelle Monaghan as a slack and a single mother "who form an unlikely partnership when they are framed as terrorists and forced to become members of a cell with plans to carry out a political assassination." I'm not so sure how you get framed as a terrorist and then have to become one, but this is the movies, and they pull off strange premises all the time. I imagine that Chiklis will lead some sort of manhunt for these accidental bad guys in the name of national security.Sweetening this bit of news are the first images from the set, and they are pretty much all Shia, all the time, although there's also a little bit of Monaghan too. Looking at the images, which are over at Just Jared, I can't help but think that this guy who looks all too comfortable with a shotgun and smoke is the same curly haired peppy kid from the second Charlie's Angels. He's all grown up! They'll be filming this flick until March, and it will hit theaters for our entertainment on August 8.

Michael Chiklis Talks Possible 'Shield' Movie
Filed under: Action », Drama », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Home Entertainment »
I just danced a little Irish jig right here at my desk. In an interview over at MTVMoviesblog, Michael Chiklis discusses the "very real" possibility of a big-screen version of one of my favorite television shows -- The Shield. If you haven't seen The Shield (fool!), you may know Chiklis as The Thing from the Fantastic Four movies -- works that have received slightly less critical acclaim than the excellent FX drama. Says Chiklis, "Wow, there are a lot of questions about the potential of a Shield movie these days. I don't dismiss the possibility at all. I think it's potentially very real. It would all really depend on the idea. We are very, very protective of The Shield." And just as I'm in mid-jig, Chiklis clarifies: "I don't think The Shield will be a movie," he said of the series. "But I think that there's potential for Vic Mackey to be in a movie." Well. You lost me there, Chiklets.
I think Vic Mackey is a phenomenal character, and I love Chiklis' portrayal -- at times he is so intense it looks like he's going to pop a testicle. I would totally see a Vic Mackey movie ("This Christmas...Vic Mackey is Back - ey!"), but as a big fan of the show, I'd want to see all the other terrific supporting characters up there as well. What about Shane? Claudette? My absolute favorite -- Dutch? You wouldn't do The Simpsons Movie with just Homer! Also, if this does happen someday, it would be very wise of the producers to bring back Forest Whitaker as Kavanaugh. He was so insanely great on the show that this season felt lacking after his departure. A Kavanaugh/Mackey big-screen battle of the nutjobs -- now you got yourself a movie! If the film happens, it might just have to be a prequel -- in the cutthroat world of The Shield, Chiklis isn't even sure Mackey will live to see the finale. "It really depends on if he even survives this season. Because, with these writers, you don't really know. I don't think they even know yet how it's going to end ... but there's no question that it could go on."
Tribeca Review: Rise: Blood Hunter

You've got to like a movie that gives us a nude Lucy Liu, shot high and from behind, and then moves her slowly over to a full-length mirror where all will be revealed ... but she's a vampire, so no reflection! Rise: Blood Hunter, from director Sebastian Gutierrez, is a cheap and dirty mash-up of the vampire and revenge genres, following L.A. reporter Sadie Blake (Liu) as her quest to find out who murdered a goth vampire wanna-be lands her on the menu of the real vampires behind the crime. Unfortunately for them, some potent blend of reporter moxie and girl power prevents her from staying dead like they planned -- she ends up kicking open and crawling out of the morgue drawer she was stuffed into, pissed off and shaking like a heroin addict for want of blood. Soon enough, she'll adjust to her new lifestyle and even acquire two must-have accessories: a girly little crossbow as a signature weapon and a vampire mentor who encourages her to "embrace your shadow side," whatever that means.
Sadie's shadow side is apparently the side that allows her to kill and dine on innocents, and not even particularly annoying innocents, as is sometimes the loophole. Picking up a reasonable young hitchhiker at one point, she quizzes him: "Do you have a wife? Have a girlfriend?" After giving all the wrong answers, he's lunch. Hey, she's a vampire -- vampires gotta eat. I have to say I wasn't expecting such a morally troublesome hero to emerge from those paragons of virtue at Sam Raimi's Ghosthouse Pictures, but I like it! Blood Hunter succeeds through edgy little moments like that one, along with an assortment of nude scenes, each one shot in such conspicuously low light that it smacks of actress protest, which somehow makes more enjoyable, in a perverted way. Sadly, there's no virtuoso special effects or cinematography -- there was more visual originality in a ten minute vampire short included in the anthology Paris Je T'Aime, released this weekend -- but there is enough here that works to make up a picture that's good for a Saturday night.
First Poster for Lucy Liu's Vampire Movie Rises

When last we checked in with Lucy Liu's vampire flick Rise: Blood Hunter, Monika told us about a juicy scene from the film supposedly "leaked" to an eager audience of rabid fanboys looking for some blood, gore and hot lesbian vampire action. Sadly, almost as soon as the clip was on YouTube's servers, it was taken down -- I'm sure to preserve the dignity of all involved. At that time we also learned the film had been languishing "on the shelf" for awhile (as they say in the biz) but had finally been given a release date.Fortunately, especially for fans of the aforementioned hot lesbian vampire action who didn't get a chance to see the clip on YouTube, the release date seems solid and to prove it, distributor Samuel Goldwyn Films has dropped the first one sheet poster for the film for your consideration. I'm a big fan of Lucy Liu and would pay good money to watch her kick some vampire ass, or really, do almost anything. Plus, I'm also a horror fan who usually likes these kinds of movies. So, following that logic, this movie should be right up my metaphoric ally. Oddly enough though, looking at the poster I had the opposite reaction. I was rather amused instead of interested. Why? The tag lines.
I don't know about you, but when I see tag lines on a poster that say things like: "From the Producer of the Grudge franchise and the writer of Gothika" I tend to worry a little. It just seems like quite a stretch and a bit like desperation time on the part of the distributor. Or maybe I'm just too sensitive. The poster looks just fine and pretty much follows the standard horror conventions for films of this genre. Plus Lucy Liu looks great (as expected) and the film also features the excellent Michale Chiklis of TVs The Shield and my soon-to-be-wife, the super-sexy Carla Gugino too. Put that all together and you really might have something. To find out exactly what that "something" is, check out the flick when it hits theaters June 1st. Or go to Tribeca.
Meet the Real Silver Surfer

Eight weeks before Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer hits theaters, a number of Youtube videos have popped up featuring a giggly fat man in silver body paint and bald cap who walks around what looks like Venice interacting with the locals and declaring himself to be the real Silver Surfer, as opposed to the toned figure on the billboards. "I wanted to play myself and they said 'no.' I wanted to play Mr. Fantastic and they said 'no.' Racism. It's because of my skin color." I'll say this for Fox's viral marketing department -- at least these clips are mildly amusing. The best one features the chubby Surfer actually attempting to surf. "It's a beautiful morning," he says, chatting up a guy next to him who is also about to go out. "Kind of reminds me of the great deepness of space, you know? Kind of goes on forever." He then takes a running start at the water and freaks out because the water is too cold.
The other three videos aren't quite as good as the surfing one, and the one where he offers "surfing lessons from the Silver Surfer" on the street corner cuts way too fast for us to discern anything about what's going on. Fox should hire a cameraman who knows the principles of comedy a little better. Nevertheless, like I said, it's pretty funny if you're looking for something to watch on a rainy day, as it actually is today. I'll close by reiterating the point of the whole thing -- Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer opens in theaters on June 15.
New Pics of Chiklis in Thing Costume

Yes friends, this post officially kicks off the Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer filming coverage. We've now shifted from rumor-mongering and guesswork to actual, legitimate movie production. This is my favorite part of being a movie blogger. Rumors are fun, but they get frustrating. I love watching a movie take shape, particularly one which I'm excited/hopeful about. So be warned, Fantastic Four news will abound in the coming months, and I consider this to be a wonderful thing. So, are you ready for the first bit of news? I must say, it is a great one to kick off the season: Ladies and gentlemen, I give to you pictures of Michael Chiklis as The Thing in his full costumed glory. Also included are Johnny Storm in his Fantastic Four costume, Sue Storm in regular old street clothes, and a large old statue of Victor Von Doom. Does it look fun? Yes, it certainly does. This movie still leaves True Believers with cause to worry (because of the first film), but my fanboy nature is taking over, and I can't help but get excited for this film.
Chiklis Says FF2 Starts Soon
Those of you longing for some serious news on the Fantastic
Four sequel can get ready - the wait is almost over. Well, for news, anyway. The movie is still awhile in
coming. It's been widely known that the FF team is gearing up for a sequel, and actor Michael Chiklis, The Ever-Lovin' Blue-Eyed Thing, recently stated
(during an appearance on Regis and Kelly) that filming would begin early this summer; fitting into the
expected time frame for a July 4, 2007 release. Chiklis also confirmed that the primary filming will occur in
Vancouver, Canada. You can, of course, rest assured that your faithful geek film blogger will be diligent in bringing
you all the breaking news as filming gets underway - and if you hear anything that you don't see on Cinematical, make
sure to get it to me - I love reader help. I'm really hoping that the second Fantastic Four flick will give me a better finished product than the last one did. Regular readers will of course know that I enjoyed the last one for what it was, but wanted it to be infinitely better. Maybe now that origins are out of the way, we can get down to some serious action. With all the Silver Surfer/Puppet Master/Galactus rumors that are floating around, there's certainly plenty to hope for (or fear, depending).
