The 'Se7en' Crew Reunites to Get 'Proud'
Filed under: Thrillers », Deals », Scripts »
Se7en... I'll never forget the first time I watched it, nestled with friends into the old seats at Gettysburg's Majestic Theater, all of us enamored, shocked, chilled, and buzzed on the thrill of the film IMDb ranks as #27 out of the Top 250 Films. It's one of those movies that elicits glazed eyes of fandom at its mention. But could the magic be brought to life again? The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog reports that Se7en alums David Fincher, Andrew Kevin Walker, and Michael De Luca are re-teaming to make a new adaptation of Max Ehrlich's The Reincarnation of Peter Proud for Columbia Pictures. Fincher is, of course, attached to direct, and Walker will pen the script. (The book was originally adapted by Ehrlich himself for the film back in 1975.) The story focuses on a college prof who becomes plagued by recurring dreams and nightmares that he realizes are memories of a past life. With the help of his girlfriend, he tries to find the source of the visions and "discovers a woman and her grown-up daughter who are keys to his past life." The original story got in some hot water for a subplot rife with incest, but methinks that will be diluted or deleted this time around as everything gets updated.
With all of this in place, the only blocks left are the cast. It might seem like an easy pick, but I'd love to see Kevin Kline bite into this. Yes, he's the go-to guy for college professors, but he's also severely talented and severely under-utilized. A role like this could rip him out of the crap. But if the choice was yours, who would you like to see crack the past? Or are you just recoiling at word of another remake?
New Line Waits Until 'The Thirteenth Hour'

I am getting a terrible sense of deja vu -- I skimmed this Variety article very quickly, thinking as I read "Oh, I remember reading the reviews of this book, and I always meant to pick it up." But then I saw the word "preemptively" and realized it hadn't been published yet. So either there's a novel out there that's eerily similar, or I'm no longer existing in space or time, like a red-haired and clothed Dr. Manhattan. What if I came up with the story first and never wrote it down? Anyway, according to the aforementioned article, producer Michael De Luca has snapped up the rights to Richard Doetsch's not-yet-published novel, The Thirteenth Hour. It hasn't even been taken to publishers yet, but De Luca's got it, and is taking it to his old New Line stomping grounds. It's described as a cross between The Bourne Identity and The Time Traveler's Wife, following a man who is accused of brutally murdering his wife. He's given a chance to save her by going back in time, but only in one hour increments, where he must put together clues leading to who killed her, and why. "It has a great cinematic structure that unfolds in reverse," says De Luca. So far, no director or starting date has been attached to the project.
Maybe my memory is ringing because of its faint resemblance to Memento or Deja Vu? It sounds like a combination of those two more than anything else. I'm always up for a time traveling story that isn't by Michael Crichton, though, and I'll be happy with a sci-fi version of The Fugitive. And just think of how many actors out there who are dying to do a Harrison Ford impression!
Sony Confirms That Metal Gear Solid Is Coming To Big Screen
Filed under: Action », Deals », Sony », Fandom », Games and Game Movies »
The last time fans of a video game franchise got their hopes up about a big screen adaptation was Peter Jackson's Halo adaptation, and I think we all know how that one turned out. Sony is hoping to have better luck with a big screen adaptation of Konami's Metal Gear Solid. Variety has announced that Sony's Michael DeLuca will produce alongside game creator Hideo Kojima. Rumors of a movie version had first surfaced during the last E3 conference. During the D.I.C.E Summit in Las Vegas, Sony chair Yair Landau confirmed that a film version was in the works. The franchise has been a big seller on all three platforms and has spawned four sequels, including a new title slated for Playstation 3. The game originally centered a genetically enhanced ex-soldier in his battle against the terrorist organization called FOXHOUND. The stealth game was well-loved by gamers and praised for its cinematic imagery and characters. I guess Sony must have thought they could adapt the game with a minimum of fuss since all of the sequels in the franchise give them a few story lines to choose from. The project is only in the early stages of development, so it might be awhile until we see a writer or director attached; as long as Sony keeps a strict "No Uwe Boll" policy they should be off to a good start.
