Hurwitz Taking 'Arrested Development' Movie to Prison?

Earlier this month
we told you that "Arrested Development" creator Mitch Hurwitz was scripting an absolutely for-reals, big-screen Arrested Development movie, and that he would direct it himself. Speaking at a writing panel this weekend at the Austin Film Festival (where he appeared alongside Steven Zaillian and AD executive producer Ron Howard), Hurwitz dropped a few more hints about what exactly we might be seeing plot-wise, and it sounds like somebody in the Bluth family (or heck, maybe all of 'em) will be heading to prison.

Honestly, it's hard to tell what Hurwitz meant when he briefly gave in to moderating producer Marcia Nasatir's prodding at the "Art of Storytelling" panel in Austin. According to Austin 360, "Hurwitz relented to Nasatir, and said that there would be a heavy jail presence and then made jokes about the inclusion of TARP money, a nod to the inability of a film to be as timely as television due to lag times in production and release."

Over at Collider, Matt Goldberg wonders if the Bluth family real estate business could easily lead into a comical plotline about the current housing crisis. Methinks you're onto something, Matt. Might we see another Bluth in prison orange? If so, I vote for putting a Bluth other than George Sr. or Gob behind bars, because the last time Will Arnett went to the slammer, well... we got Let's Go to Prison. (I know I shouldn't punish the AD universe for that stinker, but the negative association lingers.)

So what do you think, Cinematicalites? What could Hurwitz's "heavy jail presence" mean for the Arrested Development movie?

'Arrested Development' Inches Closer to the Big Screen

We've run numerous Arrested Development stories since the series was canceled in 2006, and you can probably file this one in the same land of "Yes, sometime soon!" But it never hurts to keep fueling the fan fire, and remind Fox that we'd really really like the Bluths to return. It might be closer than we all think as according to The Hollywood Reporter, Mitch Hurwitz and James Vallely are actively working on a script for an Arrested Development movie. Hurwitz will direct the film.

Hurwitz has said in the past that he wouldn't even begin to write a script unless all of the actors were committed, and THR notes that schedule conflicts remain one of the biggest hurdles of a big-screen Bluth reunion. But perhaps this is a sign that Hurwitz and Vallely know something we don't, and that the super careers the show spawned (notably Jason Bateman, Michael Cera, and Will Arnett) will leave enough of a gap for a movie.

When Cinematical caught up with Arnett in New Orleans, he confirmed there wasn't a script, but was optimistic that the film would begin shooting by the end of the year. "It's really just a matter of getting a script. I know that the studio is ready to go and everyone's kind of ready, but there's a lot of moving parts. There's a lot of people in the cast, a lot of schedules and stuff, but we're in that process now of figuring it all out, actively." Let's be optimistic and hope we see them start filming Arrested Development: The Movie by December or January. I just want my Bluths back!

'Arrested Development' Movie Story Revealed!

Now that almost everyone in the cast (holds fist in air, screams "Cera!") has mentioned that they'd be up for an Arrested Development feature film, we turn to any piece of plot information we can get our creepy little perverted hands on. Series creator Mitch Hurwitz was out promoting the new animated show Sit Down, Shut Up (as executive producer) -- which also features Will Arnett and Jason Bateman in its voice cast -- during the TCA press tour, and he provided a much-needed update with regards to a big-screen Arrested Development outing. Hurwitz says, "We want to do it, we have a deal more or less in place from Fox Searchlight, and we're kind of getting all the actors on board."

Sounds good -- a lot of this is stuff we've already known -- but then Hurwitz went and dropped the story bomb on everyone. Do you wanna know what this film will be about? Do you really wanna know? Because it's beyond crazy -- it's so freakin' out there you might need to sit (or lay) down, preferably in a relaxed position with one leg (left?) slightly bent. Ready? Here's what Hurwitz and the gang have planned plot-wise for the film: "We have a story, which is basically Valkyrie meets Hotel for Dogs." Wow. So does that mean the Bluth family will find themselves in a position where they have to hatch a plan to assassinate a group of Nazi dogs? Seems that way, based on that description.

What do you think the movie will be about?
