News Bites: Sarah Jessica Parker Gets a New Assistant & Rita Wilson Befriends Meryl Streep

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting »

Here are some romcom news bites for your Monday:

Move over, Jennifer Hudson! Just last year, Sarah Jessica Parker had a romantic assistant who passworded all of her love letters with "love." Now THR reports that the Sex and the City star is getting a new assistant for her upcoming romcom Did You Hear About the Morgans? (The same project I mentioned here.) The assistant in question: Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss. But unlike her meek television personality, Moss will get to be a "controlling and almost obsessive-compulsive personality" -- which must get set off when her boss is shoved into witness protection.

Anyhow, it's about time she got a mainstream gig! Moss has had some other big feature work like Girl, Interrupted (she played Polly, the burned girl) and Virgin, which got her an Independent Spirit nomination, but it's been all television and low-buz gigs these days. It might be a romcom, but at least she won't have to be all soft and sweet this time around.

Meanwhile, the untitled Nancy Meyers pic is quickly turning into a who's who of the older funny set. Last we heard, the film boasted the likes of Meryl Streep, Alec Baldwin, and Steve Martin. Now THR reports that Rita Wilson has been added into the mix, to play one of Streep's best friends. This definitely sounds like an improvement from Old Dogs for Wilson. And I can't help but hope: Who could be next? Teri Garr? Martin Short? Or, I cherish the thought -- Wilson's hubby Tom Hanks putting on his comedic hat once again?

Meryl Streep's Romantic Indecision: Steve Martin or Alec Baldwin?!

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting »

If you were checking out the casting bites back in August, you might recall that Meryl Streep was looking to sign on to a new romantic comedy penned by Father of the Bride and Irreconcilable Differences scribe Nancy Meyers (which Meyers will also direct). The film was said to focus on a love triangle, and now Variety reports that the beaus fighting for her affection will be: Alec Baldwin and the just-signed Steve Martin.

But still, we know nothing about the plot other than the fact that both will play rivals fighting for Streep's affections, and that this mysterious project will leap into production during the month of romance -- February.

At the very least, it looks like this could bite on the question: Which do ladies prefer -- the sexy guy or the funny man? Baldwin comes from a pack of bros so sexy that his last name became a term for hotness in Clueless. As for Martin, well, he might be a wild and crazy guy, but he's also a bit of a goof.

If you had your choice, who would you pick?

Casting Bites: B.J. Novak, Meryl Streep, Max Thieriot

Here's some top casting news for Thursday, August 7:

  • The office used to be the perfect prep work for a life of filofaxes, stale coffee, and covert games of freecell. Now it's the perfect training to become one of the Inglorious Bastards. The Hollywood Reporter posts that B.J. Novak is in talks to play one of the soldiers in Quentin Tarantino's long-in-coming film that suddenly got a jolt of caffeine. Should Novak's talks work out, he'll play PFC Utvich, "a soldier of slight build who comes from New York."
  • Meryl Streep, meanwhile, is looking to get more romantic comedies under her belt. I guess she's really digging the lighter fare. Variety reports that she is in advanced negotiations to star in an untitled romcom that will place her in a romantic triangle with two men. This project comes from the pen of Nancy Meyers, who has brought us Private Benjamin, Irreconcilable Differences, Father of the Bride, Something's Got to Give, and The Holiday. But who will play the lucky leading men?
  • Finally, Max Thieriot has scored the title role in a new sci-fi action film called Prodigy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Playing a kid named William Cooley, he gets to be "a rebellious student at an elite boarding school producing world leaders with the help of pharmaceuticals. Three days before graduation, several of its alumni are murdered, and William is implicated." The valedictorian begins to investigate the poor kid, and the two become reluctant allies in the fight against the bad guys. Dave Kalstein adapted the story from his own novel, and production is slated to begin in October.

Spielberg, Coppola and Lucas to Hand Scorsese His Oscar

According to L.A. Weekly blogger Nikki Finke, there will be three presenters of the Oscar for Best Achievement in Directing. Those presenters? None other than Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola and George Lucas. Finke doesn't go on to make assumptions, but I'll go ahead and speculate that the planners of the telecast know something about who will win this award -- or they're making a hopeful gamble. Of course it will be great television to feature three of the most important "New Hollywood" directors hand a long overdue award to a fourth member of that era, Martin Scorsese. Personally, though, I think if Scorsese is a definite lock for the award, then Robert Redford, Kevin Costner, Barry Levinson and Roman Polanski should be the ones presenting it.

Finke has learned of a few other "surprises" we can look forward to on Sunday night, including an appearance by Tom Cruise to present his old boss at Paramount, Sherry Lansing, the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Also, the supporting acting awards will not be announced at the beginning of the ceremony, as they usually are, and none of the scheduled performers from Dreamgirls (Beyoncé, Jennifer Hudson and Anika Noni Rose) will sing the song they sing in the movie -- who will perform what is not revealed, however. As for montages, we can expect one directed by Michael Mann about the portrayal of America in movies and one directed by Nancy Meyers about the portrayal of writers.

It is being rumored that this year's Oscar telecast will be extremely long, so hopefully the Academy and the planners have some other surprises that are more exciting than these. Of course, many of us will be glued to the set the whole way through to find out which picture will be revealed as the best, but I think the media is overestimating the public curiosity this year and I doubt that many people will really care enough to be up that late.
