Natasha Henstridge Reports on Racial Attacks in 'Anytown'

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Casting »

She might be busy dealing with a fiancee who has visions and thinks he's a prophet, but Natasha Henstridge is about to get serious as well. The Hollywood Reporter posts that the Canadian actress has joined the cast of the upcoming drama Anytown, written by Zak Meyers and Dave Rodriguez, with the latter directing.

Set in a normal, suburban "anytown," the film follows high school students gearing up to graduate. One, Brandon (Matt O'Leary), is the "bull-headed leader" of his group of friends, who has a misguided view of Patriotism and uses violence to make himself heard -- "kidnapping an Indian student and committing a shocking string of crimes." They videotape the crime, and it becomes a media sensation, which attracts Henstridge's news anchor to the story: "The event forces her to examine media's post-Sept. 11 role in fueling hate crimes committed by youth."

Now we've just got to wait and see if any of those who could see the movie and reexamine their own actions will actually give the film a shot, or just condemn it. Then again, this is a film with a production company that said the following about wrapping production: "after lots of work and lots of pain. that's a wrap on anytown. try and break us. we might get close. but it AIN'T gonna happen. see you on the red carpet bitches." THR says they're still filming in LA, so I imagine this is where Henstridge comes in to play.

I Know One 'Species' That Definitely Isn't Endangered

Filed under: Action », Horror », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », MGM », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels »

I pray you'll forgive me for bringing you up-to-date on some colorful DVD news that's (at least) three weeks old, but it just amuses me when a genre series keeps chugging along well after it probably should have been tossed into mothballs. (That doesn't include the new American Pie video sequels. There's nothing even remotely amusing about those things.) We've shared a few tidbits on the third Species sequel (the second one to go straight to DVD), but Fangoria has a bunch of new info that just might amuse people who love silly sci-fi and blatant jiggle-factor. Yep, the series that brought together sci-fi, horror, Ben Kinglsey and Natasha Henstridge's (frequently) naked breasts is back! On October 2 you and your horny gorehound pals can gather 'round for MGM's Species 4: The Awakening!

Apparently this one's about a sexy college professor who is justifiably concerned after discovering that she's not human at all, but instead a human-alien hybrid that's about to go into heat and slaughter a bunch of men who *just* got to see her boobies. The flick stars (the stunning) Helena Mattsson as the inevitably undressed alien babe and Ben Cross as the uncle who tries to keep her one step ahead of some other freaky-murderous alien monsters. Sounds like a half-decent way to spend 80-some minutes, I suppose. Indie-maker and music video director Nick Lyon makes his studio debut on the project. Screenplay courtesy of Species 3 writer Ben Ripley, and Species 3 is a pretty solid chunk of fun trash.

In addition to the unrated version of Species 4, October 2 will also see the release of a 2-disc Species Special Edition -- which is kind of weird because I could have sworn there was a Species Special Edition released alongside Species 3. (There was.) This new set will include audio commentary with Ms. Henstridge, Michael Madsen and director Roger Donaldson, plus a whole second disc jam-packed with Species stuff. And you'll notice how I never once mentioned Species 2 during this entire article. That's because even I have some taste. (For a specs breakdown on the new Species SE -and- a bunch of gory pics from Species 4, hit up Fango for a few minutes.)

Natasha Henstridge Joins The Tourist

Filed under: Thrillers », Casting », Mystery & Suspense »

Back in August, Martha had the news that Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman had signed to co-star in The Tourist. The story follows a man who is introduced to an underground sex club by an enigmatic "friend" who may not be who he appears to be -- are they ever? It's no surprise that things turn sour when the club may be involved in a young woman's disappearance.

Variety announced that Natasha Henstridge has joined a cast that also includes Oscar nominee Michelle Williams, Maggie Q, and Robert "Toshi" Kar Yun Chan. There is no word on Henstridge's character but since she has made a career out of being "the hot girl" it really doesn't take much imagination to guess that she will most likely spend most of the film half-clothed. Lately, Henstridge has been steadily working in TV with parts in Commander In Chief and a slew of TV movies and mini-series. Henstridge really never managed to hit the A-list when it came to movie projects and I don't think she will ever fully live down the Species franchise, but this seems like a pretty high profile drama, so it might be her shot at some better parts in the future. Considering this is the same actress who said, "yes" to Ghosts of Mars; I'm pretty sure they couldn't get any worse. The Tourist is still shooting on location in New York so it should be a while before we get a release date.

Bond Girl Rumor #456: The chick from Species?

Filed under: Casting », Sony », James Bond », Remakes and Sequels »

You know what this whole "whose gonna be the next Bond Girl" runaround feels like to me? It's like when Beverly Hills, 90210 kept going into its tenth season – long after the departures of Jason Priestley, and Shannon Doherty, and the actors who played the parents, and the broad from Saved by the Bell they had hired after Shannon Doherty left (yes, all of that happened, and yes, the episodes are currently on SoapNET, if you need impirical proof.)

But just in case you're still paying attention, it's my duty to inform you that the producers of Casino Royale have narrowed the supporting actress competition down to four candidates. Based on this Variety report, I'm not sure whether or not Rachael Stirling, sometime pretend lesbian and daughter of Diana Rigg, is actually one corner of the lucky quadrangle, as Martha previously reported. But another quasi-familiar name is floating around: Natasha Henstridge, known to South Park fans as The Chick from Species. But isn't an actress whose standing could be described as C-list at best sort of an unlikely candidate for such a high profile role? Nah. The trade reiterates what we've been saying for ages: no one wants to play Vesper Lynd, because no one wants to slum it in a franchise film if they can't be the bottom-line star. Oh, and the old Halle Berry Curse probably doesn't help.
