It's not quite as massive as San Diego Comic Con, but New York Comic Con is definitely its own animal, and the convention took over Manhattan this weekend with its comics, costumes and characters. For your convenience, here's a brief roundup of all the movie-related stuff at this year's NYCC:

News

• McG did not deny nor confirm that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton would play a part in the new Terminator film, teasing "Perhaps by not answering your question, there's a small answer within." He also noted that since the T800 plays a big role in the film, they're trying to use visual effects to include Arnold in some capacity. On the Christian Bale tirade, McG joked: "You only got to hear the most explosive parts, but that remix is pretty hot." [More at Coming Soon]

• io9 reports that at the Radical Studios panel, Barry Levine said that Joseph Kosinski will return to San Diego Comic Con with a full trailer for the Tron sequel. [io9]


• Watchmen's Dave Gibbons addressed questions about the film's altered ending (""The outcome is exactly the same as the graphic novel, but the MacGuffin, the gimmick, is a little different."), and whether or not he thinks a prequel or sequel is a smart idea ("If you try to add anything to Watchmen, you're not enriching it, you're diluting it. Sure, you can tell another adventure of Batman or Spider-Man, but ("Watchmen") is like a complete story ... leave well enough alone.") [More at Coming Soon]

This isn't really earth-shattering news on The Spirit, but it is an interesting item nonetheless. Frank Miller has written a blog for Spike all about his experiences at New York Comic Con. (And if you missed it, which I did, he also reminisces fondly about his rocky relationship with Will Eisner over on the movie's official site.)

Miller writes all about his love for New York, admiration for a comic convention that is rivaling San Diego ("San Diego -- New York's hot on your ass!"), and the excitement of debuting the teaser trailer. "It was with provincial pleasure that I got to introduce The Spirit teaser trailer in the city that so wonderfully inspired Will Eisner, and inspires me like a son of a bitch today. It was, to say the least, the perfect setting."

He continues, "The Spirit movie is a love letter to New York, and here we were: Deborah Del Prete, my producer and a behind-the-scenes warrior without whom the movie would've been unachievable, me, Eva Mendes, who brought Sand Saref to unforgettable life, and Mike Uslan, the man who held tight to the license, and the trust Will Eisner extended him, until he was confident Eisner's treasure could be portrayed with the respect it deserved. And right there, filling the hall was a raucous New York crowd, roaring in response to their first glimpse at what, I believe, is a dream come true for all of us. Only two regrets: I'd have happily suffered Eisner's inevitable criticism, and our inevitable argument, were my Mentor alive to see it."

The picture above takes place toward the very end of the scene they showed us yesterday at New York Comic Con, and it comes toward the end of a battle between armed forces and the Hulk. This scene is also predominantly featured in the new trailer which will play before Iron Man in about two weeks. Essentially, the military have Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) on the run. They chase him into this glass tunnel, lock both entrances on either side and launch two smoke-type bombs into the area. Outside, jeeps and a slew of troops gather awaiting Banner's transformation. They want this monster and they want him bad.

Suddenly, as the smoke builds up, we see Banner press his hands against the glass -- his eyes go green, his face fighting the beast within. Smoke fills the screen; it's quiet. Everyone waits. Then ... BOOM! -- the Hulk crashes out of the glass onto this huge field, running for his life. Several jeeps give chase, guns firing from every corner of the screen -- bullets ripping into Hulk's skin; he bumps one jeep and the vehicle rolls over. He gets to another one, picks it up and proceeds to smash it until the thing is in a million pieces. Emil Blonsky (Tim Roth), who at this point has been given a few injections of that super serum, heads out to where Hulk is. Hulk tries to beat down Blonsky, but the latter has an extra bounce in his step. For some reason, he's not like the others -- he can move pretty fast. After a brief cat and mouse, the two approach each other (seen above). Blonsky says, "Is that all you got?" Hulk looks down, winds his leg back and goes to deliver a giant kick to Blonsky's stomach ... and we ... cut to black.

You know that room Willy Wonka takes everyone in -- the one full of candy, and then the fat kid gets sucked into the chocolate pipe? For a geek, Comic Con is that room. Actually, Comic Con is like visiting 60 or 70 of those rooms for an entire weekend. I'm not even what you'd call a geek, gamer or fanboy, and I get absolutely overwhelmed each and every time I attend one of these conventions. It's seriously like losing yourself in another universe for awhile -- and then you get to watch a really sick trailer ... or three.

NY Comic Con blew the f*ck (pardon my French) up this year. Last year, they hosted Hostel II and The Hills Have Eyes 2. This year, they had Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Wanted, The Incredible Hulk, The X-Files: I Want to Believe, Hellboy 2: The Golden Army, Speed Racer, The Dark Knight, The Spirit, Prince Caspian ... and much more. Yup. In one year, NYCC has seriously kicked things up a notch and I was happy to be a part of the fun.

I'll do a whole recap thingy tomorrow (the scene they showed from Hulk brought the house down -- huge highlight for me), but in the meantime check out all these pics I took throughout the day. They're not all perfect, but they give you a pretty good idea of what it was like walking around, oblivious and in desperate need of some lunch. Above you can see a photo of the Exclusive Comic Con poster for Wanted (click on the image to enlarge). Wanted is just one of the films that will host a panel tomorrow during New York Comic Con, with the film's director Timur Bekmambetov on hand to answer questions ... and a little birdie told me there might be some new footage screened as well. I was able to meet Timur tonight during a private function at Universal's fatdaddy suit in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel here in New York City. I could sit here all day and talk about this friggin' suite -- remember the apartment they rocked out in Cloverfield, way up overlooking Central Park? Yeah, this was the exact same view. Unreal.

I'm not allowed to talk about what went down in this suite, but I believe we're allowed to show you this poster and urge you all to head out to Comic Con tomorrow to check out Timur and Wanted. Screw it ... based on what I saw, this movie looks pretty damn ridiculous. Action. Lots of it. Crazy car chase. Jolie with marks all over her body. Lots of red. I'll shut up now. .

Wanted hits theaters on June 27th.

The Hills Have Breakfast -- The Lucky Ones Eat First (Wes Craven was on hand for an early breakfast to promote The Hills Have Eyes 2.)

Wes Craven: "I guess it's a way of looking at a concept that you're really not safe any place. Because none of us are. You could be in the most protected home and have a sibling snap or have some terrible disease spring up within your own body, or get run over by a Mercedes and have a high-class death. It just has to do with we all have that working realization that whatever sense of safety we have can be shattered in an instant. I've always been interested in looking locally for those things."

Stephen King Talks Dark Tower Comic, Feature Film Plans, Duma Key, Next Straub Book, Van Accident (A ton of people flooded the Stephen King panel to hear the novelist talk up Marvel's Dark Tower comic book series.)

Stephen King: "And I know J.J. Abrams work and Damon Lindelof, his collaborator on Lost. David is just a total comic-book freak and loves The Dark Tower. He likes those books and I trust those guys, cause they've got a lot on the ball. So, when they said 'We'd like to talk about doing this,' I said 'You know what? Why don't you option this and see if you can develop it.' And they said 'How much do you want for an option?' And I said 'nineteen dollars.' And that's what they paid me, and that's where it is."

Kevin Smith Talks Superhero Death Wish, Joel Siegel Feud, Superman Returns' Logic Problems, Ryan Phillippe Rumors (Kevin Smith showed up to bash Superman and announce his plans to shoot back-to-back films next year.)

From Ryan's write-up: "According to Smith, the logic problems occur if you accept Bryan Singer's premise -- that Superman Returns picks up where the second film leaves off, with Superman having sex with Lois, then giving her an amnesia kiss and taking off to go find his relatives and whatnot. When Lois finds out her kid in Superman Returns can throw a piano, and is therefore Superman's kid, why is she not very surprised? She should have no memory of having sex with Superman, so when she visits him in the hospital, shouldn't her first question to him be -- Smith's words -- "When did you rape me?"

Eli Roth Talks Tarantino, Hostel II, The Cell, The 'Splat Pack' and Hostel III Possibility (Writer-director Eli Roth was all amped up to talk everything from Grindhouse to this summer's Hostel: Part II.)

Eli Roth: "Right after I finished Hostel, I asked Guillermo del Toro if I should do a big budget or a low budget movie next. So he just goes (in his best del Toro accent): 'Whatever gives you the biggest boner man. You've got to wake up with a f**kin' rager, because if you don't have a boner you can't work.' And I thought, 'He's right.' You have to be that excited about the project you're doing ... and that was Hostel II."
