Nic Cage Uses 9/11 To Explain 'The Sorcerer's Apprentice'
Filed under: Fandom », Newsstand »

However, things went a bit ... goofy when he was asked what it was like to produce the movie. He explained that 9/11 really puts his movie into perspective: "A day like September 11th kind of puts into focus everything that I want to accomplish as a producer. I make films for the children. When times get tough it is increasingly important that we put a smile on faces all over world and entertain the entire family and I think that's what The Sorcerer's Apprentice was all about."
So, there you go.
Nic Caqe -- Born to Ride!

The entire concept of Nic Cage being "born to play Johnny Blaze" strikes me as amazingly humorous. The guy has been making statements like this since his initial casting, and my general reaction is two-fold. First, I do really appreciate a comic book movie actor who really knows and cares about his subject outside of his role in the film. I think it is great that nobody had to coach Cage on who his character was, or fill him in on the background of the Marvel universe. I love the guy for that reason, and I'm glad he's getting to fulfill a dream. Heaven knows I'd love to be in a comic book movie. Second, hahaha. Born to be the Ghost Rider. I've heard people declare "this is the role I was born to play" before, but typically not talking about a flaming skeleton on a chain motorcycle. This got me to thinking, what other celebrities might have been born to specific comic book roles and may not even know it yet? Or even outside of celebrities ... how many of you were born to play a super hero? The list is pretty slim for me, but if I were born to a hero, it is probably Commander Keen. How long do you suppose we'll be waiting until we see a Commander Keen flick?
Ghost Rider Galore!

Ready or not, Ghost Rider is on the way. Personally, I'm still looking forward to the flick, despite my generally negative attitude and very low expectations. It'll probably be another Elektra, but who knows ... maybe we'll get lucky. And if nothing else, once it is in cinemas I'll be able to stop writing about the sucker. Unless, of course, they start thinking sequels. Nah. Until then, however, I am obligated as your geek beat writer to bring you the latest in Ghost Rider news. First, the official blog has been updated with a brand new poster. Yes, it is loading in a media player and not an image viewer. That's because it is a lenticular poster. For those of you who've never needed to know the word "lenticular" before now, it means the poster has changing artwork. Weee! It starts with Johnny Blaze's (Nic Cage) face, and turns into the flaming skull. It actually is sorta cool, in a geeky way.
Second, Sony has finally got around to launching a full, official website. It has everything you'd expect from a movie website: character bios, movie trailers, a synopsis, downloadable computer media and little online games. Seriously, I want to meet the guy (or girl) who has Nic Cage as Ghost Rider buddy icon. If you're really that into the Rider, wouldn't you probably want a classic comic book image of him?
Geek Bytes: Ghost Rider is Looming

Geek news I found while plotting a weekend of Muppet Christmas goodness:- For those of you who enjoy the "Superman is Jesus" discussion, Bryan Singer goes deep into the symbolism of his Superman Returns flick in a long and in-depth interview over at Superhero Hype. Definitely worth the read.
- IESB interviews Nic Cage. Only another month or two before his Ghost Rider flick finally sees the cinematic debut it was supposed to get much earlier. Cage isn't worried.
- Jessica Alba shows MTV around behind the scenes of Rise of the Silver Surfer. Despite myself, I'm very excited for this film. Fanboy nature seizes control of my brain yet again.
- TFW2005 has an interesting look at the Ratchet model from Michael Bay's Transformers flick. It looks much like the general theme established by the other images we've seen so far. If you like Bay's stuff on the other bots, you'll like this. If not, it'll give you something else to complain about.
- More Ghost Rider (aren't you the lucky one?) and more interview action from Superhero Hype in the same line. SHH brings you an interview with director Mark Steven Johnson.
Cage, 50 Cent Join The Dance
Variety reports this morning that Universal is making
a feature based on The Dance, a
documentary by John Darling Haynes. Haynes' film, which doesn't seem
to have ever been screened outside of a few festivals, tells the story of prizefighter/volunteer prison boxing coach
Billy "The Kid" Roth. Nicolas
Cage, who will star as Roth, actually began planning the movie three years ago for his Saturn Films production
company; the project seems to have just found a home at Universal, which managed to acquire the rights to the story. The feature -- also titled The Dance -- will be built around Roth's coaching experiences in Louisiana prisons, and will focus specifically on his relationship with one inmate, to be played by 50 (Make sure you say "fitty" in you head when you read that. If you don't, he'll find out and come kick your ass.) Cent. As you might imagine, Roth believes the inmate has "the talent to be a contender" but, wouldn't you know it, the lad is serving a life sentence. Stupid freaking court system.
No word yet on a director, or when production will begin.
