Kit Kittredge Hits the Net with American Girl Trailer

Filed under: Family Films », Trailers and Clips »

Back in February of this year, I posted about the American Girl doll Kit Kittredge, who was finally making her way to the big screen by means of HBO, who had taken the reigns from Walden Media. A "resourceful girl during the Great Depression," Kit is a writer who tries to keep life going through her words. Mansfield Park director Patricia Rozema helmed the movie, titled Kit Kittredge: An American Girl, from Narnia scribe Ann Peacock's script, and it has one heck of a good cast for a family film. Abigail Breslin is starring as Kit, Chris O'Donnell and Julia Ormond are her parents, Stanley Tucci and Joan Cusack are her uncle and aunt, and there's also Wallace Shawn as a Register reporter.

Now, finally, a trailer has popped up over at the film's American Girl website. It's looking like a cute, retro Nancy Drew, with mystery spy equipment traded in for an old-school typewriter and Breslin's insidious quirk. As the story goes, Kit is a writer, and a kid, who is trying to get her foot in the door at the local paper. Obviously, she isn't taken very seriously, but gets involved with a mystery to get the scoop and get the job. Breslin looks cute as the lead, although I have to say that I'm most intrigued by Joan Cusack's stint as some wild-driving crazy aunt. (That, and it's nice to see her co-star without brother John.) Nancy Drew had only a moderate response, so I'm wondering if putting the girl in the retro period, rather than putting her in retro clothes in modern-day, will help the film out. Besides, the flick already has a whole legion of girls with American Girl dolls waiting to see this.

Jeanne Tripplehorn will Play Jackie O in 'Grey Gardens'

So while I might not be the biggest Jackie O or Jeanne Tripplehorn aficionado, I will say this: they do look an awful lot alike. The Hollywood Reporter announced that Tripplehorn has signed to play the iconic Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in the HBO Films 'remake' of Grey Gardens. Tripplehorn will be joining Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange in the 'true' story of two of the most eccentric women you could ever meet.

Back in 1975, Albert and David Maysles, Susan Froemke, Ellen Hovde, and Muffie Meyer made a documentary about the lives of Edith "Big Edie" Ewing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale. They were the aunt and cousin to Onassis and lived a bizarre life in almost total isolation in a ramshackle mansion by the name of Grey Gardens. After trying for years to have the home brought up to code, the two were finally separated when "Big Edie" died in 1977 (Little Edie finally sold the house in 1979 to a former editor for the Washington Post). The documentary inspired an award winning stage musical in 2006 starring Christine Ebersol as Little Edie. The new film from HBO will not be a musical (thankfully, I might add) and instead was based on the original documentary.

The cast also includes Daniel Baldwin as Julius Krug, the former secretary of the interior and true love of Little Edie (Barrymore). Tripplehorn is doing some post-production work for Winged Creatures, an ensemble drama about a group of people who survive a shooting in an L.A. diner (I guess it will be kind of like Crash, but with more gunfire). Grey Gardens is being directed by Michael Sucsy (who also co-wrote the script with Patricia Rozema) and is currently shooting on location in Toronto, Canada. Grey Gardens will hit theaters in 2008.

More on That American Girl: Kit Kittredge

Filed under: Casting », Deals », New Line », Family Films »

News has slowly been increasing on the upcoming American Girl production. To recap: American Girl is a series of dolls that have been around for a while and embody certain historical periods and backgrounds. The dolls are pretty high-end, and come with clothing packages, books and even furniture to make the experience complete. One of them, Kit Kittredge, a Patriotic little girl from WWII, is now getting her stab at a feature film. In February, she was coming to the screen by way of HBO, and in April, Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin was cast to star.

Now there's a new company and the rest of the main cast all signed in. The feature, now called Kit Kittredge: An American Girl Mystery, is now in the hands of New Line and Picturehouse, to be directed by Mansfield Park helmer Patricia Rozema. I'm not so sure where the mystery comes in, as reports say that the film will focus on her growing up during the beginning of the Great Depression -- is it from one of the books? Variety has reported that Madison Davenport has signed on to play Kit's best friend, and a trip over to IMDb shows that they've pulled together a pretty decent cast for the film. Actually not "pretty" but "really." Since the movie is currently filming here in Toronto (because the city is just so darned American, I guess), I'm tempted to go hunt them down, as the names include: Joan Cusack, Stanley Tucci, Chris O'Donnell, Julia Ormond, Wallace Shawn, Jane Krakowski, Glenne Headly and Tideland wonderkid Jodelle Ferland, who will play Kit's friend, Ruthie. They've also got some cute unknowns lined up as well -- the official website is already up and showing some of the kid's auditions.
