Comic-Con: Gwyneth Paltrow Talks To Us About Playing Pepper Potts in 'Iron Man,' Breaking Bones and Happy Hogan
Filed under: Action », Interviews », Comic/Superhero/Geek », ComicCon »

While sporting some serious heels that looked like they might be able to give the Iron Man armor a run for it's money, Gwyneth Paltrow gracefully strutted into our interview and talked about her return to sci-fi, how she approached Pepper Potts, husband Chris Martin's acting in Extras, and her bone-breaking injury.
Click on Gwyneth to hear the interview, which includes highlights like:
- What it's been like working on Iron Man as compared to Sky Captain and The World of Tomorrow.
- Exactly what happened to her leg. (Ouch!)
- She's been a been fan of both Robert Downey Jr. and Jon Favreau, and signed on to play Pepper Potts even before reading the script.
- She used to watch Jeff Bridges in The Jagged Edge on Betamax when she was a kid, and loved working with him in this film, "He's the Big Lebowski!"
- Longtime Iron Man buddy Happy Hogan WILL be in this film, although she wasn't really allowed to say who will be playing him. Based on the love for Jeff Bridges that she kept mentioning, signs are pointing to the fact that it'll be him.
- "This is not just a movie for guys ... I think women will be happy to accompany their guys to it."
- She is "very organized" like Pepper Potts, but says she doesn't have a complicated relationship with a superhero. "Well, I kind of do," referring to hubby Chris Martin, of Coldplay.
- The idea of her children one day playing with a Pepper Potts action figure is, "Kind of weird."
Comic-Con: Liveblogging the Marvel Studios Panel
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Comic/Superhero/Geek », ComicCon »

We're here, literally crammed like a sardine into some of the first few rows at the Marvel Studios panel, and they've hit the ground running by introducing the talent right away. No fancy speeches or anything.
The Incredible Hulk just started shooting, so we unfortunately won't have any footage or pictures coming your way, but they did manage to bring Liv Tyler and Ed Norton down from the set. Woot! The questions are from the moderator, IGN's Eric Moro.
- So where does The Incredible Hulk fit into the movie mythology? "This is a part one, and it's the beginning of a whole new Hulk saga."
- Why another Hulk movie? "Because he's The Incredible Hulk!" Well, that tells me a lot. "We also won't have a Hulk that is three different sizes."
- Edward, you're contributing more than acting to the film, what else are you doing? "Well, you're making me be immodest ... I came into this and I wrote the screenplay. I was a Marvel kid growing up, and I used to subscribe to a lot of the books. Remember when they used to come in plastic with the little piece of scotch tape on the back? This story has almost limitless potential in it to be remade and redone. It's a really classic modern mythology."
- Liv, Betty Ross definitely isn't a damsel in distress ... what's your take on the character? "Well, I haven't started shooting yet, so I'm a bit out of the loop, but I used to love the television show and I'd watch it with my mom. In this film, we're searching for a cure for him."

I was lucky enough to score a backstage wristband from secret sources deep inside of Comic-Con, and while we wait for the Marvel panel to begin, I took a turn backstage and noticed a surprise guest: Gwyneth Paltrow! She wasn't listed as being here, but she'll be out front in moments, and looking pretty darn stunning in a gauzy little red dress. Hopefully she'll let us know how big of a role Pepper Potts will be playing in the Iron Man film.

I usually don't get excited about movies based on comic books I'm not familiar with, but I have to admit I'm really, really looking forward to Iron Man. Despite the fact that its based on one of the few Marvel titles I never got into, the adaptation stars three of my current favorite actors, Robert Downey, Jr., Terrence Howard and Jeff Bridges. It also stars Gwyneth Paltrow, who I certainly don't mind looking at for any extended period of time. With an Oscar-winning actress and three Oscar-nominated actors, Iron Man won't be just another comic book movie; it has the opportunity to be one of the best.Entertainment Tonight has scored one of the first looks at the movie, including some behind-the-scenes footage of Downey goofing around on the set with a motor bike and Howard firing a M2. 50 caliber machine gun from atop an army Hummer. There's no new Paltrow material for you to feast your eyes on, but while being interviewed by ET, Downey does discuss a kissing scene he filmed with the actress.. When asked if he should have serenaded Paltrow to get her in the mood, Downey states that there's no way he could compete with Paltrow's husband, Coldplay singer Chris Martin.
Iron Man is being directed by Jon Favreau, and I've been trying really hard not to associate his involvement with the fact that he appears in an awful Marvel Comics adaptation, Daredevil. That pic marked the last time I looked forward to movie based on a comic book character unfamiliar to me. I am confident, though, that my expectation for Iron Man will not result in similar disappointment.
You can check out the movie on May 2, 2008. You can check out the EW clip after the jump.
Gwyneth Paltrow Signs To Play Pepper Potts!
Here's some big breaking news, if Iron Man casting is "big" news to you, which it kind of is around here -- especially Iron Man casting news that involves Oscar-winning sweetheart Gwyneth Paltrow! Paltrow has signed to play Iron Man's love interest, Pepper Potts. Hmmm, I'm not exactly sure what I think of that decision. Then again, I seem to be one of the only movie nuts in the universe who really enjoyed Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow, a sci-fi retro-adventure flick that featured a playfully amusing performance by Ms. Paltrow -- so I guess I'd be foolish to complain about this casting choice.
For some reason this upcoming Iron Man adaptation has captured my attention like no other superhero flick ... since the first Spider-Man flick showed up, that is. When director Jon Favreau (Made, Elf) was signed (even after his underrated Zathura fared so unspectacularly at the box office) I was intrigued. When two of the Children of Men screenwriters were hired, I was enthused. And when they grabbed Robert Downey Jr. (of all people) to play the iron-clad billionaire Tony Stark I was pretty darn psyched. (I'm of the opinion that Downey is a fantastic choice for this role, although I can plainly understand why other Iron Man fans might disagree)
For those who might be less than thoroughly versed in Iron Man lore, I'll tell you that Pepper Potts was once the moon-eyed secretary of billionaire playboy industrialist superhero Tony Stark, and if you think she's just some one-note love interest, I recommend you think again. (As if anything's as simple as "boy meets girl" in the Marvel Universe!) Now, I ask the hardcore Marvelheads the obvious question: Gwyneth Paltrow? Is she right for this role? Frankly I think the gal's a doll, and I think it'll be fun to see her and Robert Downey (and Terrence Howard) dancing their way through a big-time superhero adventure.
Pepper Potts Back Up For Grabs

Sad but true, my friends, the tales of Rachel McAdams playing Pepper Potts are apparently nothing but dirty lies. While the actress seemed like a very good choice for the part, and fanboys across the world seemed to roundly approve, Rachel McAdams will not be joining the cast of Iron Man. You can read the debunking of these rumors over at Rachel Online (such a clever name for a fansite, isn't it?), straight from the mouth of her publicist, who flatly denies any involvement with the film. The website advises we keep our fingers crossed for The Dark Knight, however; so if you are hoping to see McAdams in a super hero flick you might still have a chance. While this news is very depressing on the surface, we can always look for the silver lining -- this means the rumor mill can start back up again! We could be looking at months and months of weird rumors and incorrect reports attaching every starlet in Hollywood to the project. Before you know it, there will be 10 actresses playing the part! Fun, right? Right? Yeah, I know. But at least all you have to do is read about it. I've got to keep writing this stuff.
Rachel McAdams is Pepper Potts?

There are probably a good deal of you out there who read this headline and thought to yourself "Who the heck is Pepper Potts?" I'm sure most of the readers who regularly check Cinematical for geek news are familiar with the girl, but for those of you who check it for the other 95% of our content, we'll give you a quick filler. Pepper Potts showed up as Tony Stark's (that's Iron Man) secretary back in the 60s, and had a mad crush on the man for years before eventually marrying* a guy named Happy Hogan, who was both an employee and friend of Stark/Iron Man. So really, the short answer to the question of "Who is Pepper Potts?" as she relates to cinema is probably "The love interest and main female lead for Jon Favreau's Iron Man flick." This means the part is likely a hot commodity, because superhero flicks are all the rage, and everyone wants in on them these days. Iron Man may not be Spider-Man, but the title certainly carries a fair amount of prestige and has a shot at being quite a successful flick. As the title of this post obviously indicates, Rachel McAdams is rumored to be the lead horse (probably a poorly chosen metaphor) in the race right now. Does she want the part? Who knows. But the part seems to want her, as Latino Review reports she has been offered an exclusive read-through on the script for her immediate attention. Opinions?
*And there's a whole story in their relationship as well.
