Danny DeVito is Bringing Crazy Eddie to the Big Screen!

Filed under: Drama », Deals », Scripts », Trailers and Clips »

His prices are ... INSAAANE!

In a rather strange and intriguing bit of news, Variety reports that Danny DeVito is bringing Crazy Eddie's story to the big screen in a new project appropriately called: Crazy Eddie. Yes, this is Eddie Antar, the electronics king featured above, and a man any television viewer from the '80s should remember.

It might seem strange to focus a whole biopic on some guy who goes nuts in electronic commercials, but there's a whole backstory to the man. Apparently, the discount electronics guru took his company public, but then started skimming money and falsifying inventory to sweeten his stock's value. There was a hostile takeover, he lost his company, and went on the lam, fleeing to Israel. He was extradited, imprisoned, and is now actually going to cooperate on the story Peter Steinfeld (21) is penning.

Are you itching to see Eddie's story on the big screen like I am, or do you think DeVito is just INSAAANE?

Fan Rant: For The Love of the Game -- Leave 'Slap Shot' Alone!

Filed under: Classics », Comedy », Sports », Fandom », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels », Fan Rant »

We say it all the time -- "That's a film that should never be remade!" 95% of the time, its true. The latest to go through the remake treatment is the hockey classic Slap Shot -- and it's apparently been buzzed and bitched about since last summer, when Peter Steinfeld took the writing job. But now Variety announces that Dean Parisot will be directing, which means that it will take an act of God or Gordie Howe to stop this atrocity from happening.

First, it ought to be illegal to remake anything that starred Paul Newman. It's as simple as that. He's off limits from Fort Apache the Bronx to The Sting, and everything in between. Secondly, Slap Shot is just one of those perfect pieces of Americana -- one of those grungy comedies that could only be made in the 1970s. It's old time hockey as it doesn't exist anymore -- the days when helmets were "optional" and considered to be for wimps, and when the blood flowed freely, and guys really did wrap their knuckles in foil. You can't go into a hockey locker room to this day without hearing someone quote this film. Not an amateur practice goes by without at least one person sporting a Chiefs jersey. Everyone in and outside of the hockey world can quote it, everyone's got a favorite scene ... or two ... or three. It's a classic.

Warner Independent Wants 'Money For Nothing'

... and the chicks for free? Having just tackled 21, the MIT card counting story starring Jim Sturgess, The Hollywood Reporter has posted that screenwriter Peter Steinfeld is going back to the world of easy money, but this time, it's even easier. He's going to adapt a lottery scam memoir published last September called Money for Nothing for Warner Independent Pictures and Maguire Entertainment. Yes, that's Tobey's company, which is really racking up the projects lately.

This time around, Steinfeld takes on the story of Edward Ugel. There are two sides to this coin. On the one side, there's Ugel's addiction to gambling. On the other is his job -- one that doesn't require a great brain and intricate math, but rather the ability to be convincing.

Working for a company he calls The Firm, his job is to go to lottery winners and convince them to take a smaller, lump-sum payment from his company, while the business then takes in the rest of the coin. Where 21 preyed on rich casinos, Ugel's job is to prey on the poorly educated and impulsive winners. However, THR also says that he then pocketed "a good chunk of change for himself in the process." Big money and gambling addictions -- you can imagine how this will play out.
