Weekend Box Office: Audiences Into 'Into You', 'Coraline'
Filed under: New Releases », Box Office »
I am anything but a rom-com fan (there's maybe one good one a year, by my reckoning), but even I was charmed by the lovely, funny trailer for He's Just Not That Into You. A bunch of genuinely funny people -- Ginnifer Goodwin, Jennifer Aniston, Justin Long, Drew Barrymore -- in what appeared to be a breezy, clever rumination on romance (that voicemail Goodwin leaves, starting out as a practiced, casual come-on and deteriorating into a panicked digression about how "more women are admitted to law school now than men," made me laugh every time): I wanted to see it. I haven't yet -- the unversally bad reviews dampened my enthusiasm -- but apparently the rest of the country wanted to see it too. The two-hour-plus film won a busy weekend with $27.5 million dollars, beating out a sci-fi thriller, a broad comedy with Steve Martin, and a 3-D animated wonder. The latter, Henry Selick's Coraline, settled for third with $16.3 million. That may not seem like much, but consider that the film had no brand (with the possible exception of the "from the makers of A Nightmare Before Christmas label) and that the marketing did little to hide its deep-seated creepiness. On the other hand, Push, the gorgeous-but-incoherent sci-fi thriller only managed $10.2 million, a disappointing opening for what could have been at least a minor event film. Blame a crowded weekend and the fact that Summit Entertainment is still a relative newcomer to this whole wide distribution thing.
Trailer Park: Monsters, Panthers and Fanboys

We've got another bushel or so of trailers for films just over the horizon. How promising are they? You tell us.
Monsters Vs. Aliens
Dreamworks latest animated feature has a group of terrestrial monsters (a blob, a fish man, a giant bug, a human-sized cockroach/mad scientist and a very tall woman named Susan) fighting off an alien attack. This homage to 1950s sci fi features the voices of Seth Rogen, Will Arnet, Paul Rudd, Hugh Laurie, Reese Witherspoon, Kiefer Sutherland, Rainn Wilson, Stephen Colbert and looks flat out awesome. It opens on March 27 but I really want to see it NOW.
Pink Panther 2
While it's hard for me to work up much enthusiasm for a sequel to a remake I didn't see which was based on a series that had pretty much run out of steam by the end, Steve Martin's Inspector Clouseau does have an endearing charm and I found myself hoping the damn fool doesn't get himself killed falling down stairs, impersonating the pope and brawling with eight year old karate students. Also, this time Inspector Dreyfus is played by John Cleese who I think is one of the funniest guys on the planet. Pink Panther 2 hits theaters on February 6.
Cadillac Records
Set in 1950s Chicago, this one follows the lives of musical legends such as Muddy Waters, Leonard Chess, Little Walter and Howlin' Wolf and Elvis Presley, with a cast that includes Beyonce Knowles, Adrien Brody and Mos Def. Cadillac Records comes out on December 5.
Trailer Park: Still Another Five Degrees of Trailer Separation

Once again using my own take on the classic Seven Degrees of Kevin Bacon, I'm bouncing from one trailer to the next via connections both insignificant and profound. Let's start with...
Pink Panther 2
When I first heard about the 2006 Pink Panther remake I, like many, cried "blasphemers!" Who could possibly fill Peter Sellers' shoes as the endearingly idiotic Inspector Clouseau? Well, if anyone could do, it it would be Steve Martin, and even if the film wasn't a total success Martin brought some inspired silliness to the role, and now he's back for more. This teaser trailer is kind of funny, though I don't care for the more up-tempo version of the classic Pink Panther theme (was that in the last film? I don't remember). The good inspector sneaks into a sold out movie, and while I won't give away the joke, I will say that it will definitely work better in theaters than online. Eugene posted about the trailer here.
And speaking of remakes...
Death Race
It's unfortunate that this one starts with one of the worst cliches of all time. "The rules are simple," says one character, "there are no rules." Gag me. I've always liked Death Race 2000 from 1975, and while this new version apparently strays pretty far from the original, it looks to be a fun bit of brainless action. Jason Statham is a former NASCAR champion who has been framed for his wife's murder so he can participate in a three day auto race for convicted felons. In its few years of existence Death Race has garnered a bigger audience than the Super Bowl. Cars are armor plated and armed with a potpourri of exotic weapons. The trailer is non-stop action and if the film is the same I'll be willing to overlook that godawful cliche. Here's Erik's take.
And speaking of Jason Statham...
Molly Sims Nabs Two Comedic Roles
Filed under: Comedy », Casting »
If you're a fan of tall, super-thin, leggy blondes who like to show off their goods, you're going to want to see two upcoming comedies -- Yes Man and Pink Panther 2. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Molly Sims, the tow-headed tease of television's Las Vegas, has nabbed roles in both comedies. In Yes Man, that comedy where Jim Carrey says yes to everything that comes his way, she'll play "the ex-wife he can't get out of his head." In the second Panther remake, which still scares me, she'll play "a news anchor who chronicles the misadventures of [Steve] Martin's bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau."If you don't watch Vegas, and aren't very familiar with Sims, you can get a taste of her over at YouTube. Just type in "Molly Sims," and the first three links you'll get are her changing out of her bikini on Vegas, flashing her legs on the show, and then sporting fishnets on Craig Kilborn's show. But believe it or not, she used to be in Vanderbilt University working towards a law degree. That is, until she got signed with a modeling agency and quit school. Since she's got the looks and the brains, here's to hoping these roles let her show more of the latter. In the meantime, if you want more Sims, you can see her in her previous comedy roles -- Mrs. Feldman in Starsky & Hutch, Liz in The Benchwarmers, and Angie in Venus & Vegas.
