'Shrek Forever After' to Be Last 'Shrek' Film ... for Now
Filed under: Animation », New Releases », Family Films », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

I have a personal kink when it comes to a good old fashioned fairy tale subversion. I can't explain it, but there's just something about messing with those classic tales that never fails to amuse me -- so you can see why I have a soft spot for the Shrek franchise. News of a fourth film first hit back in 2007 and now USA Today gives us our first look at the fairy tale comedy, as well as (good?) news that the fourth installment of the franchise, Shrek Forever After, will be the last (and as much as I liked the first two films, I'll admit that by the time we had reached Shrek the Third, the charm was wearing a little thin).
Bill Damaschke, head of creative production at DreamWorks and Mike Mitchell (Sky High) gave some hints as to what we should expect from Shrek Forever After, and according to Mitchell, this time Shrek is feeling out of touch with his inner ogre, so he strikes up a deal with Rumplestiltskin (voiced by Walt Dohrn) to change his life. But things don't work out as planned and Shrek finds out that life in Far Far Away has changed for the worse in his absence. Franchise favorites Puss in Boots (voiced by Antonio Banderas) and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) will return and some of the new additions to the cast are Kathy Griffin and Kristin Schaal (Flight of the Conchords) as witches and part time Ogre hunters, and Mad Men's Jon Hamm as the leader of the ogre underground.
Stars in Rewind: Christopher Walken in 'Puss in Boots'

There are the great actors, men and women with an uncanny ability to transform themselves anew with each and every performance. There are popular actors, who are known for one thing and one thing only, but who have reached iconic status purely because audiences adore them. Then, there's Christopher Walken. Sure, there's The Deer Hunter and Annie Hall, but he also built Optimis Prime in his garage one lazy Sunday afternoon. He told us what the prescription for a fever was. And in 1988, he demanded a pair of boots from Jason Connery. I can say no more. Watch the clip, and experience new depths of horror and hilarity.
(When you're done pondering that, let's all ask Erik Davis why he immediately thought of me when he watched this. This is all thanks to him.)
Shrek 4 and Puss in Boots Dates

Before I share this news with you, I feel I should admit up front that I don't really get the Shrek franchise. Okay, it was kinda clever, and it made me chuckle a few times, but it certainly didn't blow me away. So if my lack of enthusiasm for the following news is obvious, that is probably why. Nonetheless, I do continue to applaud the existence of successful "family" oriented flicks. Even if I don't get some of them, I'm glad they exist. Two bits of Shrek related news came out of the third quarter 2006 earnings report from DreamWorks. First, Shrek 4 is definitely still on the way, but it'll take awhile before we see it -- summer of 2010 is the current target. Yes, this means most of the original child audience for the Shrek line will have grown significantly, but hey, the film obviously appeals to far more than just children. And I can always hope the new generation will have moved on to other fads and Shrek 4 will be the last of the franchise, right? Wrong. After Shrek 4 we get the Puss in Boots movie, which is no longer expected to be a DVD release between Shrek 3 and Shrek 4, but rather a theatric release sometime after Shrek 4. Of course, all these plans are subject to change dependent on the success of the third Shrek film next year, which already seems to be trying to commit suicide by casting Justin Timberlake.
A Shrek Spinoff - And Not for Donkey

Right from the start, let me assure you that this is
NOT an April Fool's joke, as much as you might want it to be: though Shrek
3 isn't even finished yet, things are already in motion for Shrek 4. Not only that, but there's also
going to be FIFTH film featuring characters from the Shrek series, this one called (Ready? No, you're not. You
could never be prepared for this.) Puss
in Boots: The Story of an Ogre Killer. Seriously, that's really happening. According to an interview Antonio Banderas gave MTV last week, the Puss in Boots spinoff will be
made between Shreks 3 and 4. Because apparently the world has an insatiable desire for all things
Shrek - damn us and our weakness for even vaguely clever animated humor. In addition to letting us know that we will never, ever be free of Shrek, Banderas also shared a little plot information on Shrek 4: apparently in that one he'll be voicing not only Puss in Boots, but also "his badass brother." Again, not a joke. What's his name going to be? Puss in Bowling Shoes? Puss the Gay Blade? (The latter, by the way, would totally get $10 from me - in case you're wondering, Dreamworks.)
