A handful of geek news bits are the perfect way to end the week. There's all kinds of intriguing little quotes scattered all over the Internet tonight, and I've compiled them all below to give your mouse finger and Google toolbar a rest. Enjoy!

As always, the Old Canuckehead gets first grab -- X-MenFilms.Net was informed by Fox that the first X-Men Origins: Wolverine teaser is supposed to be attached to The Day the Earth Stood Still, which hits theaters on December 12th. Will we see the same footage that most of us glimpsed via YouTube bootleg from San Diego ComicCon? I bet we will!

Buried in that Ain't It Cool News scoop on J. Michael Stracynzki was the news that he had just finished his rewrite of Thor. I think the God of Thunder is moving faster than Captain America.

MTV's Splash Page caught up with Robert Downey Jr. and pressed him for word on the Terrance Howard/Don Cheadle swap. He stayed classy, of course: "I had nothing to do with that decision. I love Terrence very very much. That's all I'll say because I haven't talked to him yet ... I've always admired Don [Cheadle]. It's one of those situations where I still don't quite know what happened or why. Here's what happens too: things happen and you wind up commenting on them before you've actually talked to the people and it's in poor taste." He also stressed that the Iron Man franchise will be an "interactive" one, with he and Jon Favreau striving "to make sure we don't piss off the public that put us in the position we're in."

Earlier this afternoon, Marvel sent out a press release officially announcing not only Jon Favreau's involvement as director on Iron Man 2 and executive producer on The Avengers, but also that as part of his four-picture deal, Robert Downey Jr. will indeed reprise the role of Tony Stark (aka Iron Man) in both Iron Man 2 (due out on May 7, 2010) and The Avengers movie due out July, 2011.

As far as The Avengers goes, here's the brief snippet included in the press release: "In a movie event, THE AVENGERS will bring together the super hero team of Marvel Comics characters for the first time ever, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, the Hulk and more, as they are forced to band together to battle the biggest foe they've ever faced." No director has been announced yet for that film, and Marvel did not say whether Edward Norton would reprise his role as well, though it's nice to see Favreau involved in some capacity. Of course, the presence of Downey Jr. will definitely do wonders for both Iron Man 2 and The Avengers ... and one imagines that fourth film would be Iron Man 3. The press release also goes on to officially announce the casting of Don Cheadle as Rhodey in Iron Man 2. Check out the full release after the jump.

Despite the heavy hints in Iron Man that Jim Rhodes, best friend to Tony Stark, would come to play War Machine in a future film, it won't be Terrence Howard reprising his role as Rhodes in the forthcoming sequel, but rather Don Cheadle. According to the Hollywood Reporter, there hasn't been a formal announcement by Marvel Studios about it, but the casting swap appears to have come as a result of money matters (natch).

Returning still are stars Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow, in addition to director Jon Favreau, as Justin Theroux, fresh off the success of Tropic Thunder, currently tinkers away at the script. Last month, amidst the press blitz for the Iron Man DVD, Favreau confessed to wanting to incorporate both 3-D and IMAX technology in the making of the sequel (to which the world collectively replied "[BLEEP] yeah!").

Alas, it remains for the Paramount/Marvel number-crunchers to determine in which format exactly we'll see Downey Jr. and Cheadle team up come the summer of 2010.

Usually it's not too hard to imagine what a film will be like. This is not, however, the case with Sherlock Holmes. First, it was a challenge to try and imagine just how Guy Ritchie would handle the material, even with the suggestion of a "slightly stylized 1891." Robert Downey Jr. was an intriguing choice for Mr. Holmes, and now as the bigger casting pieces begin to fall into place, I'm dying to see what Ritchie makes of it.

Jude Law IS in as Watson, and The Hollywood Reporter posts that Rachel McAdams has signed on to play Sherlock's love interest, Irene Adler. THR says the character showed up in only one story -- 1891's "A Scandal in Bohemia," but should the film become part of a series, she'll be there for the ride. As Elisabeth pointed out when Mark Strong signed on, Ritchie isn't interested right now in a sequel, but that doesn't mean the studio isn't salivating over the thought. Oh yes, and Strong, who was cast in a few roles through the rumor mill -- he'll play Blackwood, Holmes' main villain. There's some excellent talent in here, and after RocknRolla, I'm dying to see Strong go head to head with Downey Jr.

And it sounds glorious! Jon Favreau is doing a lot of press for the upcoming Iron Man DVD, and he sat down with CHUD to give an interview so long, it's been split in twain. Naturally, talk turned to plans for Iron Man 2 and 3, which Favreau is deep in the process of writing. Among the highlights:

-- War Machine is likely to be in the sequel, as Terrence Howard's Col. Rhodes had too little screen time in the first film. They want to make up for that, and give him a crack at wearing the suit.

-- The Mandarin is the overarching, behind-the-scenes villain, but he comes with a lot of racial and superpower baggage that is difficult to put on screen. Starships, dragon aliens, and ten magic rings that can upset the power of the universe don't really fit into the realistic universe Favreau has aimed to put Iron Man in. And yes, Favreau is concerned about how the various Avengers will fit into that world, too. Hulk and Captain America are feasible (and the cross-over has pretty much been forced on the former), but he's not sure about Thor. (Who is?)

-- The recent hostilities between Russia and the U.S. have made a lot of Iron Man's arch enemies current again -- and we might actually see Crimson Dynamo pop up. (I vote yes, so we can get the Black Widow introduced to audiences.)

-- Demon in a Bottle is coming. Expect to also see some elements of Matt Fraction's Iron Man run pop up -- the movie and his work have a real symbiotic relationship going on. There may even be a partnership forming ...

I'm of two minds when it comes to this fall's sure-fire awards contender, The Soloist. One half of me is in mild awe that, even in 2008, we find ourselves staring down an awards bid in which a failed journalist and a failed musician help restore one another to their former glory, live life to the fullest, so on, so forth, etc. Yeah, I know it's based from a true story, but that doesn't make it instantly inspirational (well, it does for some).

The other half, however, acknowledges that two talented actors could make something special out of the material, and judging from this new trailer over at Yahoo! Movies, Robert Downey Jr. and Jamie Foxx might be just the men for the respective roles. (Oh, and Joe Wright's directing, perhaps out of a need to make a film that didn't involve the melodramatic romances carried out by a character played by Keira Knightley.)

So what do you guys think? Will this be as much of a cross between Resurrecting the Champ and Shine as I suspect it to be, or is your personal performance-hunch-o-meter positively a-tingle?

It's the end of the world as we know it ... and I have a good feeling about Chris Pine.

Terminator Salvation: Will the Governator show up in the new Terminator film? While Arnold won't be officially reprising his role in the flesh, word has it the legendary action star turned Governor of California was on set providing voice work so that those Hollywood effects wizards could take his old face and put it on someone else's bulked-up body ... and still have the Arnold we all know and love. Latino Review is currently hosting a photo that shows Arnold talking to Christian Bale behind the scenes. Is it a real photo? A photoshop job? We can't tell, but I wouldn't put it past McG to have more than a few surprises up his sleeves. Terminator: Salvation hits theaters on May 22.

Star Trek: While we won't be getting a brand new re-booted Star Trek movie for Christmas (thanks for nothing Santa!), the new look Trek will eventually touch down next May. However, one filmmaker has seen the almost-finished product and he's spilling only one or two of the beans. Speaking to MTV, Kevin Smith said "It's really strong. [J.J. Abrams] was rejiggering the opening few scenes. It's one of those things where you first heard about it and were like no they're not going to redo 'Star Trek'! And then you see the movie and you think, wow he did pull it off! He turned it into a viable renewed franchise." According to Smith, Chris Pine steals the show as the young Captain Kirk and Zoe Saldana is "really great" as Uhuru too.

Well, forget what I said about the buzz being off -- once Guy Ritchie hit the red carpet, Sherlock Holmes news started popping up everywhere. According to ComingSoon.net, Robert Downey Jr. finally has someone else to act with: Mark Strong. This is more of a confirmation than a surprise, really. When it comes to casting rumors, score one for Digital Spy! They had this weeks ago from Ritchie at BFI Movie-Con. (Internet: 1, Australian Print Press: 0.)

Ritchie is tight-lipped as to who Strong is playing -- initially, all signs pointed to Moriarty, especially since he and Joel Silver are still saying they don't have a Dr. Watson. Rumors abound over at Latino Review though -- they are saying that Russell Crowe is attached, and that he's playing Moriarty, and Strong is playing Blackwood. And look not to RocknRolla for other casting ideas, as LR says Gerard Butler was offered the role of Watson, but turned it down. It's still up for grabs.

More surprising than Strong's casting is the news that Ritchie isn't planning for Holmes to be a franchise. At the moment, he's too busy trying to make a really good debut with his reinvented detective. I'm sure Warner Bros has different plans altogether, but it's such a rariety to hear someone not pre-planning for three installments that you just have to report it. Maybe Holmes could end up like Harry Potter, and a different director could tackle each installment. No offense to Ritchie, but that could be really cool. Now if only the comic book would come out so we know what we're in for ....
