'Diary of a Wimpy Kid' Brings on Zachary Gordon and Chloe Moretz

Filed under: Comedy », Casting », 20th Century Fox », Family Films », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

Wimpy Kid is gaining some muscle! Jeff Kenney's bestselling series was optioned by Fox 2000 last year, and they put Thor Freudenthal in the director's chair this past December.

But just who is going to play the title Wimpy? It's not as big of a casting announcement as, say, Captain America but Greg Heffley has his fans and they want to know! According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's Zachary Gordon, a young up and comer who has been looking for his first major leading role. While a lot of sites (I'm looking at you Wikipedia) portray Greg as an unpleasant sort of fellow, his various schemes (haunted houses, giant snowmen) towards popularity sound pretty hilarious.

He may be the title character, but Gordon won't be playing the movie solo. He'll have the friendship of Chloe Moretz (currently the talk of geekdom with her gun-wielding, sword-swinging ways in Kick-Ass), who'll be playing the class Daria, a student with a penchant for black and "a wry sense of humor." Naturally, he also needs a mommy, and that role will be filled by Rachael Harris, who has just the right glasses for the part. It should be a fun, snarky movie for the younger set -- and given how many adults are reading the series, one that could cross over well if handled right. 16 million readers can't be wrong, can they?

Casting Bites: Gugino, Harris, and Dam-bi

From one sexy role to another: Carla Gugino will soon (hopefully) be on the big screen as Sally Jupiter, hero and pin-up girl of Watchmen, and now she's taking on another seductive role. Variety reports the gal will be the last point in the romantic love triangle called Every Day, which got cooking earlier this month. Liev Schreiber plays a guy who writes for a "semi-pornographic TV show" (that wasn't in the earlier news release!) that gets propositioned by his colleague (Gugino). But the man already has wife Helen Hunt at home, and this "strains his marriage to the breaking point." Could you resist if Gugino was tempting you?

Meanwhile, we've got Rachael Harris, who stood her own against mockumentary heavyweights in For Your Consideration (she played Mary Pat Hooligan, the actress who played the lesbian coming out to her family in Home for Purim). Variety reports that she's going to nurse Todd Phillips' The Hangover with the likes of Bradley Cooper, Heather Graham, and more. Graham is already playing a Vegas local, so maybe Harris will play the bride who might get left at the altar. But the actress isn't all laughs -- one of her upcoming films is The Soloist.

Lastly, we've got a cute, Korean hip-hop dancer on the way -- Som Dam-bi has signed onto Hype Nation. But this isn't just a tale of dancing: "An American dance crew goes head to head with a crew from South Korea," one that mixes hip-hop moves with at least one gun-toter. Oooh, it's like You've Been Served International!

Rachael Harris Joins 'The Soloist'

Filed under: Drama », Music & Musicals », Casting »

You've got to be familiar with Rachael Harris. Or, at least recognize her. If not, I demand that you go out and introduce yourself to one of the best comic filmmakers we have in this world -- Christopher Guest. She's popped up in a number of his films, starting off as "Winky's Party Guest" in Best of Show, and most recently playing Mary Pat Hooligan in For Your Consideration. On the more mainstream and less-awesome side of things, you might have seen her in License to Wed or Evan Almighty. All of the above is comedy, but The Hollywood Reporter posts that the actress is about to get musically serious for the upcoming drama The Soloist.

The film will focus on the story of Nathaniel Ayers -- a schizophrenic homeless man in LA who once went to Juilliard. An LA Times columnist, Steve Lopez, befriended the man and brought his story to the public. Word on the production first came out in August, noting that Jamie Foxx was starring, and Atonement helmer Joe Wright had the directorial chair, from a script by Susannah Grant (Erin Brockovich). Later that month, Robert Downey Jr. grabbed the role of Lopez. Catherine Keener was next to board, jumping into the role of Lopez's wife, and now Harris has signed on to play another Los Angeles Times employee. Production will kick into gear next month, and after that, the waves of awards buzz.
