Red-Band Trailers for 'Death Race', 'Righteous Kill', 'Sex Drive'

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Thrillers », Universal », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

To paraphrase the scariest horror movie currently in theaters -- Mamma Mia! -- you wait long enough for a red-band trailer and then three come along at once, at least two of which deal with hitting the road in the name of action, so without further ado...

First up is the age-restricted trailer for this week's Death Race. I've yet to watch this one myself, since reactions posted elsewhere have assured me that whatever meager hopes I have for it being just a fun piece of trash cinema -- from a filmmaker who often lives down to that title -- are to be derived from moments shamelessly showcased therein. I'm no prude, having shelf space and soft spots set aside for the man's Event Horizon and the first Resident Evil, for the reliably butt-kicking Jason Statham and for the surprisingly present Joan Allen (him signing up for it, no big surprise, but her?). However, I'm roughly one trailer away (well, one feature away) from giving it the genuine benefit of the doubt.

Erik wrote about the original trailer back in June, and now one only has to wait until this Friday to determine just how fast and spurious this baby is.

After August comes September, and after Death Race comes Righteous Kill. The profanity-spiked red-band trailer for this NYPD thriller has been included after the jump...

Red Band Trailer for 'Step Brothers'

Filed under: Comedy », Movie Marketing », Trailers and Clips »

The first trailer for Step Brothers was pretty sweet, but if you want a healthy dose of unsuitable language with your trailer, you can check out the new red band version above. It contains many of the same scenes, plus a planet of bulls**t in a galaxy of ... well, you have to watch the trailer to find out. My only complaint: I think that this is the perfect example of why that disembodied voice is really overused, and not necessary. The regular trailer used some on-screen scribbling and was all sorts of great, but the voiceover in the red band really takes away from the whole thing.

Nevertheless, this is looking like a kickass movie. I wasn't sure when I first heard about it, but I've been convinced. The comedy follows Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly as two grown men who won't leave home, and become step brothers when their parents marry. After a rough start, they realize that they're a lot alike and become best friends in adult slackerdom. We've included the trailer after the jump since it's R-rated and full of foul language. Definitely NSFW, so watch at your own risk.

The film will hit theaters on July 25.

Raunchy New Trailer for Will Ferrell's 'Semi-Pro'

Filed under: Comedy », Sports », New Line », Trailers and Clips »

Just a few weeks ago, Sir Christopher Campbell of Cinematical pointed you towards a new trailer for Will Ferrell's latest comedy. But if you were wondering if Semi-Pro was going to be the soft & cuddly Will Ferrell or the bizarrely potty-mouthed Will Ferrell, you now have your answer. Suffice to say that when it arrives in late February, Semi-Pro will most definitely be rated R.

If you're willing to share your full name, birthday and zip code, then you'll be allowed to enjoy this brand-new (and highly "red-band") trailer in which lots of funny people say lots of very profane things. And it's good news, says me. Despite the fact that Mr. Ferrell has appeared in more sports movies than Kevin Costner, the flick I was reminded of while watching this trailer was George Roy Hill's Slap Shot. And obviously that's a good thing.

Directed by first-timer Kent Alterman and written by frequent Todd Phillips collaborator Scot Armstrong (Road Trip, Old School, Starsky & Hutch), Semi-Pro has a comedic ensemble that's definitely worth sharing: Woody Harrelson (back doing the silly stuff!), Will Arnett (a brilliantly funny guy still looking for a good movie), Maura Tierney (funny and sexy!), Andy Richter, Andre Benjamin, Tim Meadows, David Koechner, Rob Corddry ... Jackie Earle Haley?

OK, aside from the final gag about the gun, I haven't been this psyched for a Will Ferrell flick in a long time.

Check Out the Gore-Soaked 'Resident Evil: Extinction' Trailer

Confession time: I kind of have a soft spot for the Resident Evil movies. (Forgive me if I don't pause for any stunned silence.) I think the first movie is a perfectly entertaining live-action comic book, full of silly mayhem, kinetic chases, goopy monsters, stylish artifice, and semi-smart ideas. As far as Resident Evil: Apocalypse is concerned, well, even I'm not that shameless. I've actually TRIED to enjoy the thing as a guilty pleasure, but it's just three degrees too inept to earn even that designation. Still, it's tough to get bored when you've got Milla Jovovich and Sienna Guillory slaying zombies in skimpy clothes. (The girls, not the zombies.)

Having blathered all that, I suppose that the third entry in the series (Russell Mulcahy's Resident Evil: Extinction), which opens (loudly) on September 21, could tip the scales on way or another: If Part 3 is worth a wet slap, then the genre fans will remember the series as satisfying brain candy with a weak center. If Part 3 sucks, then we'll recall the Resident Evil flicks like this: "Yeah, I remember those. They sucked. The first one was kinda good. Wait, was it?"

Anyway, you may have already experienced the recently-released theatrical trailer for RE3, but if you like a little more gore in your promotional materials, then you'll want to click right here to savor the R-rated goodness of a good ol' red-band trailer. (Not recommended for the squeamish, the extremely pregnant, or those offended by female thighs.) I first saw this trailer before a screening of I Know Who Killed Me (seriously, I don't want to talk about it) and it was definitely lacking a lot of the slime, the splats, and the massive open head wounds. Hooray for all the less-than-mindless zombie mayhem. Perfect way to close down a raucous summer movie season if you ask me. Only time (and box office returns) will tell if we're due for a Resident Evil: Ultimate Armageddon Explosion Mega-Catastrophe Apocalypse Extinction Elimination Deathfest Part 4. (Check out our previous Extinction coverage here, here and here. And if you're really love zombies even more than Milla, try here, here and here.)
