Release Date Shuffle: 'Hornet' Moves to Next December, 'Lying' to This October
Filed under: Action », Comedy », Sony », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Distribution », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
There are always a couple of titles that get pushed at Comic-Con, only to have those first impressions fade from memory as their opening gets shoved further and further back. Case in point: Whiteout, which showed up at San Diego in 2007, only to find itself a home next month -- over two years after. Now, if Box Office Mojo is to be believed (and they're pretty reliable), Seth Rogen and Michel Gondry's The Green Hornet will now debut over a year after making a modest presentation at this past Comic-Con, having been bumped back from next July to the following December for reasons unknown.
Sure, it could be more time for effects work (the alibi given for 2012's similar shift this year), or maybe Sony didn't relish the chance to open a crime-fighting action-comedy opposite a Predator(s) reboot and a mere week before the already anticipated Inception. At any rate (or date, rather), let's just hope that it doesn't turn out to be nearly as goofy and stylized as last winter's The Spirit first revealed itself to be at -- you guessed it -- Comic-Con.
Release Date Shuffle: 'Elm Street,' 'Jonah Hex,' 'Armored'

So amidst yesterday's set visit preview and our first little look at Freddy Krueger, it would appear -- according to Fangoria -- that the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street has been pushed back a bit from April 16th to April 30th, 2010, the same weekend that happened to bring in nearly $30 million for Obsessed this year. And the same Fangoria piece brings up a move for Josh Brolin's scarred gunslinger, Jonah Hex, up from August 6th to June 18th, 2010. It seems like a vote of confidence, either because Megan Fox is such a big box-office draw now or because Will Arnett will be once G-Force drops this Friday.
We've also confirmed that Nimrod Antal's heist thriller Armored has been bumped from this September 4th back to December 4th. The week after Thanksgiving is usually somewhat of a no-man's-land for the holiday flops to fall away and the awards magnets to work their way up and out, but for every Aeon Flux, we get something fun like Punisher: War Zone, and early rumblings on Armored are that we might not have a dud on our hands. Having enjoyed Antal's Kontroll and 98% of Vacancy, and knowing that this flick helped him land the gig directing Predators, here's hoping.
'Fanboys' Pushed to 2008; Director is "Devastated" and "So Excited" at the Same Time
Filed under: Comedy », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », The Weinstein Co. », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
You're all a bunch of intelligent and well-informed movie nerds, so try to answer this question for me: When (MOVIE X) gets bumped out of a release date and is promptly rescheduled for next January, what does that usually mean? A) The movie's really awesome and the distributor wants it to be the only good movie to hit screens during the "dump" season, B) The movie's really crappy and the distributor wants to dump it quietly when nobody will notice it, or C) The delay is because the backers are SO thrilled with the flick that they're giving the director some extra money for reshoots.Filmmaker Kyle Newman is insisting that "C" is the correct answer, thus explaining why you won't be able to see the Star Wars-centric comedy Fanboys until the first month of 2008. (The previous release date was August 17.) The director goes a little bi-polar in an email to TheForce.net. First he's devastated ("I am devastated") and then he's excited ("I am so excited") but the bottom line is that you fanboys will have to wait a little bit longer for your self-titled comedy. For those who haven't seen the trailer yet: Fanboys is about a bunch of late-'90s movie nerds who go on a cross-country road trip in an effort to steal a pre-release print of The Phantom Menace. Could make for a clever little comedy, but I'm a little skeptical of the trailer, which makes the flick look like a painful cross between Wild Hogs and Detroit Rock City. I just don't see what sleeping-bag homophobia and forced stripping has to do with Star Wars fandom.
Get Primeval Three Months Early!
Filed under: Action », Horror », Thrillers », Disney »
With very little in the way of publicity or announcements, No word yet on if Primeval will be screening for the press, but I'm not holding my breath, and that kinda sucks because A) I'm scheduled to review it, and B) I'm kinda looking forward to seeing it. It's about an American news team who travels to South Africa to get the scoop on "the world's most prolific serial killer," which seems like a specious designation when you realize who the killer actually is ... but I don't want to spoil the fun. (Check out a new pair of TV spots right here.)
Written by Michael Ferris and John Broncato (The Game, Terminator 3, Catwoman), Primeval comes from veteran TV director Michael Katelman, and it stars the likes of Dominic Purcell, Orlando Jones, Brooke Langton and Jurgen Prochnow. Special note for the horror freekz: Primeval has been rated R for "strong graphic violence, brutality, terror and language." Cool.
