'Oldboy' is Dead! Long Live the Real 'Oldboy!'
Filed under: Action », Foreign Language », RumorMonger », Steven Spielberg », Remakes and Sequels »
Looks like our friends over at Latino Review have some news on that Oldboy remake that would have starred Will Smith with Steven Spielberg directing. The initial news about this remake (which actually would have been an adaptation of "the Japanese manga by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya") had fans of the uber-violent and disturbing cult film confused and distressed, to say the least. (Okay, irate. They were irate.) I haven't read the manga, but I find it hard to believe that it would be any easier to adapt for a Smith/Spielberg-type audience than the movie Oldboy itself. Either way, it's bananas. So fans can rest easy because a trusted source has tipped off LR that the whole shebang is as dead as a doornail because "Mandate and DreamWorks didn't see eye to eye, therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away." And the thing with Latino Review is that their trusted sources are, well, trustworthy, so expect more details soon -- and stories in the trade papers that will claim the same scoop. Tomorrow.
I just don't get the appeal of remaking foreign films for US audiences, especially now that services like Netflix and GreenCine can bring whatever obscure film you just read about on your friend's Twitter/Facebook/Tumblr to your home in a matter of days. Although it could have been fun to see Will Smith eating a live octopus and disposing of enemies in exceedingly violent ways while under the direction of Steven Spielberg, it's still insulting to assume that American audiences are somehow not smart enough to find these movies on our own. Or, gasp, read subtitles! Oh, the horror.
Eek! A First Look at the New Freddy Krueger Toys
Filed under: Horror », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Remakes and Sequels »

Horror fans will be slipping back into a new Nightmare on Elm Street on April 30th, 2010, but we're already being teased with new Freddy Krueger toys, thanks to Entertainment Earth and Mezco Toyz. You can buy a little Freddy of your own in plastic or vinyl next April just in time for Jackie Earle Haley's debut as the mutilated monster who haunts our dreams.
The first question I had when I saw the plastic toy was, why does he look like those little dolls with dried apple heads that are sold at craft fairs by sweet grandmas? But thanks to a wily blogger over at Albotas and the wonders of Photoshop, you can see that Earle Haley's Freddy definitely looks more like this toy than Robert Englund's Freddy.

I'm not sure which I prefer -- the menacing creep with a big smile or the flat-faced, expressionless killer. An early review from a test screening posted at Ain't It Cool News praises Earle Haley for his performance (although not much else in the movie), but will old fans be won over too?
Either one is sure to give me, well, nightmares. It's too bad that Johnny Depp won't be there this time around.
Do you collect movie toys? And, more importantly, do you leave them in the box or take them out?
Check out a larger version of the toy after the jump.

Ron Livingston Joins 'Schmucks'
Filed under: Comedy », Casting », Remakes and Sequels »
Jay Roach's Dinner for Schmucks is adding another seat at the table for Ron Livingston; the movie also stars funny guys Zach Galifianakis, Steve Carell, and Paul Rudd. Dinner is based on the famous French movie directed and written by Francis Veber, Le dîner de cons, otherwise known as The Dinner Game, which won a César for best writing. Dinner is the story of a dining group with a rather interesting twist; they have a contest to see who can bring the biggest idiot to dinner. Soon enough, though, the guests realize their little snarky game isn't so harmless. The question is, who will be the biggest schmuck? Carell and Rudd star, and either could be schmucky, although Carell can play dumb with a straight face pretty damn well. (He loves lamp, after all.) However, I can't picture Zach Galifianakis as a bougie dinner party guest and not a schmuck. Maybe he's a more minor schmuck? In any case, this dinner table is getting full of schmuckitude, and will give all us writers a great chance to exercise our mastery of Yiddish slang for weiners.
Jolie's 'Tourist' Set for 2011 with 'Lives of Others' Director
Filed under: Action », Drama », Thrillers », Casting », RumorMonger », Tom Cruise », Angelina Jolie », Remakes and Sequels »
Angelina Jolie's pet project The Tourist might finally have a director, according to Variety. Internationally acclaimed director and writer Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck "hasn't formally entered into negotiations," but it's looking likely that the man behind the critically hailed film The Lives of Others will be hopping behind the camera for this 2011 release.Jolie reportedly turned down the sequel of Wanted in favor of The Tourist (although the rumors of her return of the sexy tattooed assassin remain at large) but she was holding out on officially signing on to The Tourist until Spyglass found a director she approved of.
Strangely enough, Tom Cruise was originally set to costar but dropped out in favor of Knight & Day with Cameron Diaz. Jolie's latest film, Salt, was originally set to star Tom Cruise, but then he backed out, the writers did a quick fix-me-up on the script, and voila -- here's Evelyn Salt!
In any case, this remake of Anthony Zimmer is about an Interpol agent hot on the trail of a former paramour and criminal; the spy makes use of an American tourist to help find her. Sam Worthington (Avatar) costars as the tourist, and according to /Film, Jolie plays the ex. On the other hand, Variety is reporting that she plays the Interpol agent. Hollywood Reporter is taking the safer route and not saying what Jolie's role will be. Yikes!
2011 sounds like one of those things where the movie keeps getting pushed back more and more until the stars and director are all like, "Whatever, I have no idea what's happening with that any more." But remember when Angelina Jolie provided us guilty pleasure movies like The Bone Collector? I would be happy to see her as the spy or the criminal; what do you think?
'Poltergeist' Remake Held Up ... Again
By Brad McHargueRemakes of classic horror films are a divisive subject among horror fans. While some consider them nothing more than a harmless nuisance, others are far more passionate in their vitriol for what some claim to be the desecration of classic films. While I personally don't like the idea of a remakes -- only because the time and money could be better spent making original films -- their existence is merely a blip on my radar.
Those with the opposing viewpoint, however, might be happy to learn that Arrow in the Head reported that MGM has delayed the remake of the classic Tobe Hooper-directed Poltergeist until the less-than-specific date of 2011. This changes the original November 24th, 2010 date reported in August. The cause for the delay is unknown.

Robert Downey Jr. To Star in Spielberg's 'Harvey' Remake?
Filed under: Classics », Drama », Casting », RumorMonger », Steven Spielberg », Remakes and Sequels »
Now that we've all had enough time to get used to the idea that Spielberg is about to remake one of the most respected films in history, maybe it will help a little to know that it might star Robert Downey Jr. According to the LA Times' Hero Complex blog, the announcement is imminent that Downey will be starring in Spielberg's update of the classic film, which marks a change from some of the other names that had been attached, including the obvious heir apparent to Jimmy Stewart (and long time Spielberg cohort) Tom Hanks and Will Smith.Harvey was the story of a gentle soul by the name of Elwood P. Dowd, and his best friend, who happens to be an invisible six-foot rabbit named Harvey. The original play won the Pulitzer Prize, but most of us probably remember the 1950 film starring Jimmy Stewart as Dowd. News of the remake hit back in August, and according to Complex, during a set visit to Iron Man 2, "the actor spoke with affection and awe about the late Stewart's nuanced timing and camera sense."
Fan Rant: Rob Zombie to Remake 'The Blob' Minus the Blob
Filed under: Horror », Remakes and Sequels »
I've been patient with Rob Zombie's movies, but for some reason he seems to be exempt from that societal rule which says "Be good at your job, or at least try to improve as often as you can." I've got nothing personal against the guy, I actually do dig his music, and I'm sure he's a wonderful human being where his loved ones are concerned. But when it comes to making movies, the guy's dancing around his own filthy vacuum. His films are actually painful to watch, not because of the oh-so-extreme violence and hilariously over-baked profanity, but mostly because of the stunningly base and amateurish filmmaking skills on display. But apparently someone with a big lump of cash disagrees with me: Variety is reporting that Rob Zombie has just signed a deal to remake the 1958 sci-fi monster movie classic The Blob. Says the clearly astute filmmaker: "My intention is not to have a big red blobby thing -- that's the first thing I want to change."
To which I'd respond ... Hey, too bad it's THE BLOB you were just hired to remake, dude! If giant red blobby creatures are too good for a man stage-named "Zombie," then perhaps he should try remaking something like ... The Funhouse. Far as I can recall there are no blob monsters in that flick.

A 'Dirty Dancing' Remake? C'mon!
Filed under: Drama », Romance », Deals »
In the continued quest by Hollywood to leave no nostalgic movie memories untouched, Lionsgate will be remaking Dirty Dancing. The sequel, Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights, bombed despite the vision of a shirtless Diego Luna, although the stage version has apparently been quite popular in London, Hamburg, Toronto, Utrecht, Boston, and Chicago. Other than a very short article in the Guardian, the only other detail available about the remake is from a Tweet by Production Weekly, that it will be written by Julia Dahl, who also wrote Uptown Girls.
How can you outdo the Swayze and Jennifer Grey in one of the best scenes ever? How can you ever top Jerry Orbach as the gruff daddy? Why does this even need a remake?! Personally, I will take the sweet yet funny send-up of the original starring the adorable Charlyne Yi (seen Paper Heart yet? Get thee to a theater!) and Channing Tatum. Video after the jump.
Pop Star Rain Up for 'Enter the Dragon' Remake?
Filed under: Action », Casting », Warner Independent Pictures », RumorMonger », Remakes and Sequels »

Every once in a while you come across a piece of movie news that leaves you feeling a little conflicted. On one hand, the mind reels at the thought of somebody trying to replace Bruce Lee in a remake of the legendary martial arts flick, Enter the Dragon. But on the other hand, I'm not about to turn down the chance to stare at Korean pop star Rain for two hours -- I mean, have you seen the abs on this guy? So lustful thoughts aside, it's about time I got to the news, isn't it? Latino Review is reporting that their sources have confirmed that the singer/actor is the front-runner to star in an update of the 1973 classic.
The original film was the first kung fu flick to be produced by a major studio, and starred Lee as a Shaolin martial artist sent undercover to a hidden island in a fight to the death. The film is infamous for being Lee's last before his untimely death at the age of 33, but was also a passion project for Lee who wanted to celebrate Chinese culture and make a kick-ass action flick. I think we can all agree that he succeeded.
'Captain Blood' Remake Heads for Outer Space
Filed under: Action », Classics », Casting », Deals », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Scripts », Remakes and Sequels »
If you know your pirates and are a fan of classic cinema, then I'm sure I don't need to tell you about Captain Blood. The 1935 swashbuckling classic starred Errol Flynn as a doctor convicted of treason who escapes to the Caribbean to join forces with a French pirate, and was the role that made Flynn a star. But here we are 74 years later and suddenly the word 'remake' started to come up in conversation over at Warner Bros. That was almost a year ago, but not only is the film still in the works, the story is about to get one hell of a venue change. Variety now reports that Daybreakers duo Michael and Peter Spierig have been hired to direct an update that would transplant the action to outer space.Back in December, Monika brought us the news that John Brownlow had been hired to pen a faithful remake, but now it looks like Brownlow will be going back to square one with his script. Blood's producer, Bill Gerber, promises that even though there are some changes afoot for the update, "There are some things you don't mess with, and that is as classic a movie storyline as you will ever find."
But here's the big question: Who will be our new Captain Blood? It's a mighty big part to fill; Flynn was a legend of Hollywood and the granddaddy for every bad-boy with a heart of gold to come after him. It's a role that requires charm, action, and a way with the ladies. The project could be a gamble for WB, but I guess as long as it doesn't turn into Ice Pirates 2, things should work out just fine.
After the jump: My suggestions for the new interstellar Captain Blood...
