Rene Russo, Where Have You Gone?
Filed under: Fandom », Fan Rant »

Actors and actresses drop out of the limelight all the time, and such is the nature of Hollywood that no one ever really stops, notices, and thinks to hire them. It's depressing and terrifying, to say the least.
The reason I started worrying about Rene Russo is actually quite bizarre. It was thanks to Jennifer Aniston, who didn't pacify my feelings on Pumas by hiring Michael Sucsy to direct her in Goree Girls. Yes, I'm a hypocrite -- one minute I'm railing against her persistent lonely girl rom-coms, and the next I'm all "Aniston as a singing Texas inmate? That's so ridiculous. Who would I cast, though? I don't know. Probably Rene Russo or something." And then it hit me ... what the heck happened to Ms. Russo? I went to IMDB expecting that she had things in pre-production, or had several films languishing in direct-to-DVD land, only to discover she hasn't appeared in a film since 2005. If IMDB is to be believed, she has nothing on her slate. Her message board is full of "Did she retire?" queries. The most recent story on her newsfeed that's actually about her is from January 2009 when she told some red carpet reporters that Jessica Simpson looked pretty.
My imagination tells me that she's left the big screen because there aren't enough parts for women "of a certain age," and she's dissatisfied with the scripts that are sent her way. I really hope it's a personal choice and not that filmmakers have simply stopped hiring her. The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle didn't stop anyone from hiring Robert De Niro ever again.
Retro Cinema: Lethal Weapon 4

Answer: In just about every conceivable way.
Lethal Weapon 3 was a mess, but it was a fun mess. LW4 isn't fun at all. It's downright boring. Everyone looks tired and uninspired (rhyme). The laughs aren't there. The action, aside from a great highway chase, is run-of-the-mill and confusingly shot. And there's a downright icky sentimental streak running through it -- a sappy side that is light years away from screenwriter Shane Black's original vision for these characters.

Watching Lethal Weapon 3 in the middle of this season full of big, bloated "threequels," it almost looks quaint. It's also -- and again, this might be due to the dreary current state of the summer blockbuster -- somewhat better than I remembered. Somewhat.
Don't get me wrong, it's a hot mess. They tried to cram way too much into this movie, which is why you get a lot of scenes of Riggs and Murtaugh coincidentally standing next to crimes as they break out. There's not a whole lot of police work going on here. Basically, wherever Riggs and Murtaugh are hanging out -- action will materialize. Witness the unbelievably unbelievable scene where Murtaugh takes Riggs to a hamburger stand and gets behind the counter to make him the world's best hamburger. Why is this scene in there? So our boys can "stumble" upon a crime in progress -- right in the middle of Los Angeles' notoriously dangerous "Hamburger Stand District." It's all pretty damn lazy.
Mel Gibson and Danny Glover should teach a class in chemistry. Their natural, lovable work remains the real draw of the series. These guys could play these roles in their sleep, and indeed there's a bit less spark in their performances this time around. The Riggs character continues his unfortunate watering down, but Glover is given a little more to chew on outside of running around yelling "Riggs!" The "8 days from retirement" bit is beyond played out, but having Murtaugh deal with aging works well for the film. Scenes like the one where Murtaugh accidentally fires his weapon in a locker room and Riggs covers for him are pretty touching.
A Crown sequel that's also a remake?!

Hey guess what, kids - another sequel's on the way!
Who could have guessed? Today's feature will be take two, at least as played by Pierce Brosnan. According to a report in Variety, ex-Bond #5 is
already on board for the movie, though the presence of his hot co-star Rene Russo is not assured. Now, here's where the story gets weird: word
on the street is that the sequel is going to be called The
Topkapi Affair. If that strange word sounds familiar, it's because there was a wonderful heist flick made in
1964 by that name - and it appears that Topkapi
is going to be the "inspiration" for The
Thomas Crown Affair, part 2. So it's come to this, has it? A sequel to a remake that's also a remake? Seriously? I mean, I actually sort of love the Brosnan version (that, along with my weakness for Sabrina, is my secret remake shame), but this is truly pathetic. I'd say we should boycott, but I'm not convinced anyone will even want to go. By the time the movie comes out, it'll be almost a decade since the success of the "original" - that's an awfully long time to expect us to hold onto our affection for anything, let alone a movie character.
Older Women Finally Play Lust Objects

I still remember what a wonderful shock it was to see the incredibly sexy, adult Rene Russo driving Pierce Brosnan crazy in The Thomas Crown Affair.
(Yes it's a remake. And yes, I love it. So sue me.) In 1999's
movieworld, most men in the 40s were paired up with lithe young things
who were barely out of school, so it was stunning to see a hot leading
man wanting a woman who was actually his own age. A look at screens
now, though, suggest that things may have changed. The desperately
under-appreciated Joan Allen was a romantic lead in The Upside of Anger. Maggie Cheung and Gong Li are babes in 2046. Catherine Keener saves The 40 Year-Old Virgin.
All of these women are in their 40s, and they all (finally) are getting
a chance to strut their stuff on screen. Great news, right? Well, maybe
not.
