Miramax Tastes the 'Lush Life'

The big screen is about to get more Richard Price. His pen has already brought us the diverse likes of The Color of Money, Mad Dog and Glory, Michael Jackson's Bad, Clockers, Ransom, and Shaft. (Which one of these is definitely not like the others!?) Now Variety reports that Miramax and Scott Rudin have picked up the rights to the scribe's latest novel, Lush Life -- which they say is grabbing him the best reviews of his career.

The story revolves around a restaurant manager and his bartender, who walk a drunk friend home one night in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. "One of the men winds up on the wrong end of a bullet, and a murder investigation reveals much about the city and the characters involved in a mugging gone wrong." But there's a bit more to it than that -- conflicting eye-witness accounts, alleged shooters, and a shocking climax -- all that tantalizing cop fare.

Variety also points out that Rudin and Price have a long history together, which started back when Rudin was only 19 and working as a casting director on the first Price adaptation, The Wanderers, back in the '70s. Price is currently adapting the novel himself, and we should have more news once he's finished.

Martin Campbell Signs for Another Movie -- Still Not 'Bond 22'

Filed under: Thrillers », Paramount », James Bond », George Clooney », Remakes and Sequels »

Just last week we got news that Martin Campbell was possibly going to direct a movie called Unstoppable for 20th Century Fox. Now there's another report that says Campbell is already attached to helm 36, the remake of Olivier Marchal's 36 Quai des Orfèvres, which we told you about back in January. The original, which stars French superstars Daniel Auteuil and Gérard Depardieu, is about two detectives investigating a series of armored car robberies. The remake was set to cast George Clooney and Robert DeNiro (who is still producing through Tribeca Films) in place of Auteuil and Depardieu, but a new rewrite from Richard Price (Clockers) has the detectives' ages lowered, so younger actors will now be required.

According to Variety, Campbell is currently prepping for Unstoppable, so his attachment to 36 won't be conflicting with that film. But unfortunately for many James Bond films, these two projects seem to indicate further that Campbell will not be directing the next 007 feature, despite his acclaim for and success with Casino Royale. One thing I find interesting is that previously 36 was being reported with Marc Forster set to direct. Forster was also rumored to have been offered "Bond 22" last month. If he was to take it, there would have to be a petition from Campbell's fans to call for another switcheroo. Meanwhile, I'll be circulating a petition calling for somebody in America to put out a Region 1 DVD of the original 36.

New On DVD - Date Movie, Freedomland, Winter Passing

Date Movie - Nowhere in the formula "Comedy = Tragedy + Time" does "Cruelty" figure in, something that this caca-palooza -- "from 2 of the 6 writers of Scary Movie" -- sets out to correct from the very first scene. When they introduce us to morbidly obese Julia Jones (Alyson Hannigan), it is with ridicule as they paint her as a hideous beast that makes men vomit and turn gay. Of course, when we remember that 2 of the 6 writers of Scary Movie were Wayans Brothers, whose stock in trade is that kind of cruelty, it makes sense (even if these are another two writers.)

A parody of romantic comedies like Bridget Jones's Diary, My Big Fat Greek Wedding and Hitch, this lame spoof goes for the easy laugh almost every time, beating to death with a golf club every gag with the subtlety of, well ... someone who beats someone else to death with a golf club. The "13" in the movie's "PG-13" rating would seem to be either a limit for either I.Q. or emotional age, as the movie's show pieces are either juvenile blue bits or have something to do with either poop, pee, puke or pus (the dreaded "4 P's"). Putting gifted comic actors like Fred Willard and Jennifer Coolidge in this stinky mess makes them both stinky by association, though as time goes by, the whole lot of them will only be guilty of contributing to a vast background of white noise that we will have learned to filter out when we grow up. Presently #64 on the IMDB's Bottom 100 of all time.
