Robert Rodat To Write Sam Raimi's 'Warcraft'

The news that Sam Raimi would be helming the game movie of all game movies, Warcraft was met with both squeals of joy, and stunned silence by the movie blogosphere. But now that it's had a little time to sink in, people seem to be really looking forward to it. Some might even wish he'd do a last minute duck out of Spider-Man 4. But at least the wait is broken up by a bit of news, and that's Raimi announcing his screenwriter. MTV and Variety both report that Robert Rodat is set to pen Warcraft for Raimi and Warner Bros.

"We want to be really faithful to the game," Raimi told MTV. "We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a World of WarCraft adventure. Only obviously it's very different 'cause it's expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture. [We hope to capture] the Horde and the Alliance and the mythology that takes place in the game, and the archetypes that the game presents. I think we would try and find touchstones within the game to make it accurate and true and choose one or some of the lands that are portrayed in the game with as much accuracy and authenticity as possible."

Rodat might strike some as an odd choice as he's best known for the screenplay to the relentless Saving Private Ryan and the fanciful The Patriot. But both scripts prove he knows his way around a sweeping action scene, and revels in heroes with puffy shirts and villains with cold sneers. So this could turn out quite well indeed.

News Bites: Tom Thumb, Matarese, and Duchovny

Filed under: Drama », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Thrillers », Deals », Warner Brothers », Celebrities and Controversy »

Have you ever wondered where Tom Thumb came from? If so, you'll be happy with a recent post from The Hollywood Reporter. It seems the tiny character is heading for the big screen with Warner Bros. and director Kevin Lima (Enchanted), and the project will be go the live action route, although Thumb might be CG. Robert Rodat, of Saving Private Ryan fame, wrote the script, which is said to "look at the heroism that a knight must summon after he is reduced to a pint size." Okay ... CG is cool and all, but I hope they stick to miniaturizing a real person. CG doesn't have to be used for everything, and Tom Thumb wasn't made into a cartoon character when he shrunk, after all.

Next up, THR also reports that David Cronenberg is circling the Robert Ludlum project The Matarese Circle, which we previously told you about when Denzel Washington signed on earlier this year. Before it was simply the latest political thriller to hit the screen, one that focuses on two rival agents, US and Soviet, who work together to find Matarese criminals lurking in the American government. But with Cronenberg? The man behind The Fly, Crash, Spider, and A History of Violence? This sounds so bloody good.

Finally, there's good ol' David Duchovny. In August, he went away to rehab for sex addiction. Now, according to Ace Showbiz, he's out and heading back to work. A statement issued by his lawyer says: "He is out of rehab and will be starting a movie soon." This will, most likely, be The Joneses. I'm just glad it's about a fake family and not about sex. After all this, I just can't watch Californication without getting weirded out.

Asger Leth to Direct Ancient Olympic Romance

Armed with only a 16 mm and video camera, Asger Leth entered Cite Soliel in Haiti, which the UN has called "the most dangerous place on Earth," to film the story of two chimeres -- gang leaders who run areas of Cite Soliel. The result of this effort is The Ghosts of Cite Soliel -- a gorgeous and gripping documentary that seems more like a carefully crafted narrative feature than a revealing documentary. And now the Danish director is going mainstream.

Variety reports that he has signed on to direct Columbia Pictures' upcoming film, Olympia. Penned by Saving Private Ryan scribe Robert Rodat, with a rewrite by director Gavin Hood (Wolverine), Olympia focuses on a love story "set against the backdrop of the ancient Olympic Games in Greece as war waged between Athens and Sparta."

Perhaps the similarities between Ghosts and Olympia is what brought the director to the project, but whatever the case -- I can't wait to see what Leth does with the story. The man has a great eye, and it'll be interesting to see what he does under normal circumstances, rather than exacerbated danger.

This is also the second feature Leth has signed on for. As Jessica shared last September, he's also attached to La Scorta, an Italian crime thriller.
