A Shiny New Trailer for 'The Surrogates'

2009 is clearly the year of the cyborgs, and with its fall release date, The Surrogates is clearly aiming to be the thoughtful one of the bunch. A new trailer has hit the net on MySpace's Trailer Park, but it's refusing to play or embed, so I've borrowed the embed from TrailerAddict (who apparently took it from IGN) all so you could watch it bug free ... but if you want bigger versions, I encourage you to pop over to MySpace or IGN if only to thank them for hosting it.
The Surrogates doesn't look bad, but it doesn't look particularly enticing either. Last year, some really creepy set photos showed up online, and I was hoping that we'd get a movie that contrasted the make-believe world of surrogates with a reality that was ugly and gruesome. I still haven't read the Robert Vendetti comic on which its based, but I got the impression (or perhaps hoped) that there was a fanatic, anti-surrogate element to the story that would result in human-on-surrogate violence. While there's hints of that in the trailer, Surrogates looks disappointingly slick and Apple store-ish. Even the "disaster" footage shown at the end is too clean and CG to really be all that horrifying. Instead of suggesting Blade Runner, all I see is I, Robot and a hint of the utopian perkiness of Demolition Man. I'd really like to be wrong, though ... but that plasticine version of Bruce Willis suggests I shouldn't count on it.

2009 has begun on a rather tense note for geekdom as Watchmen became further embroiled in legal soup. As Fox pushes for a delay, we must contemplate a rather thin year of geeky offerings .... which just shows how spoiled we've become. Watchmen and Wolverine alone would have made our year before the wonder that was 2008, when we had Bruce Wayne, Tony Stark, Bruce Banner, and the Punisher. But hey, this is going to be the Year of Announcements -- we're going to find out who Captain America and Thor are, who or what Iron Man must face in his sequel, and hey, we might even find out whether Edward Norton will reprise his role as the Hulk. We're going to have fun, no matter what happens with Watchmen.
January
Nothing. Watch The Dark Knight ten more times, I guess (especially when it returns to conventional and IMAX theaters on January 23). Or read a graphic novel; you must have gotten some for Christmas? Anyway, take a breather. You're still recovering from 2008.
February
Neil Gaiman's Coraline, and a limited release of the long-delayed Fanboys both come out on February 6th. Gaiman for the win, no question.
March
Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen Watchmen.The film is still scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 6th, however Warner Brothers and 20th Century Fox are still fighting in court over who actually owns the rights to the property. If a judge rules in favor of Fox on January 20th or before, we may not get Watchmen on time ... but we will get a whole bunch of angry fans. Read more about it on our Watchmen page.
April
Dragonball Evolution hits theaters on the 8th. The excitement is palatable.
May
This is the month of geekdom, kicking off with the film my year centers around, X-Men Origins: Wolverine on May 1. If this isn't good, the Geek Beat will burn with the fury of a thousand suns the following Tuesday. May that be your warning, Fox.
A little independent film you might have heard of also comes out this month: Star Trek hits theaters on May 8th.
Creepy Set Photo From 'The Surrogates'

The Milford Daily News is hosting some spy photos from the set of Bruce Willis' sci-fi thriller The Surrogates -- and suddenly, it just became a whole lot more interesting. The Surrogates is set in a future where every human has a robotic surrogate that lives their public life for them, while they remain tucked away in their homes. Willis plays a cop who is forced to leave his home to investigate a series of robot murders. It's based on Robert Vendetti's graphic novel of the same name, and while the graphic sounded interesting, the movie sounded a bit bland, a repeat of I, Robot. But presumably, the above photo is one of the murders, which suggests it's keeping the fanatical elements of the book. If this is an indication of how nightmarish and gruesome the film will go, I'm intrigued. What about you?
