Trailer Park: Extracting Public Enemies to the Moon

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Foreign Language », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Trailer Trash », Family Films »

Moon
The last time we saw Sam Rockwell in outer space he was playing the two headed President of the Galaxy Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He plays it a little closer to home this time as the lone employee of a mining company working an outpost on the moon. He works his three-year tour of duty with hope of returning to his wife and daughter when it's all done, but things go wrong when he discovers a downed space craft (at least I think that's what's going on) containing an injured man who is his exact duplicate. This looks like a science fiction thriller with a lot of potential and things get luney (for a limited release anyway) on June 12.

Public Enemies

Historical drama with a lot of flare starring Johnny Depp as notorious bank robber John Dillinger. Throw in Christian Bale as FBI agent Melvin Purvis and Billy Crudup (yes, the blue naked guy from Watchmen) as J. Edgar Hoover and you've got a gangster flick worth seeing. This second trailer brings to mind films like The Untouchables and Road to Perdition. Watch for this one on July 1.

Shorts
Robert Rodriguez has proven equally adept at making children's movies and flicks for grownups. This time he's plunging back into the kiddie pool with a story about a put upon kid who discovers a magic rock that makes all his wishes come true. I'm far from the target demo but the film looks cute and I got a few laughs out of the trailer. We'll be seeing this one on August 7.

Cinematical has just received this exclusive poster for Rudo Y Cursi, which recently premiered back in January at the Sundance Film Festival and will hit theaters this May courtesy of Sony Pictures Classics. Written and directed by Carlos Cuarón (brother of Alfonso Cuarón) and starring Diego Luna and Gael Garcia Bernal (who reunite here after co-starring in Y tu mamá también), Rudo Y Cursi follows the story of two rival siblings inside the world of professional soccer.

The film, which marks the first from Cha Cha Cha Films (Guillermo del Toro, Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Alfonso Cuarón) has already scored box office records when it opened in Mexico earlier this year, while watching its fantastic soundtrack (which includes a Cheap Trick cover performed by Bernal) top the charts. CHUD's Devin Faraci says from Sundance: "Rudo Y Cursi is charming and fun, but never slight. The film gives a vibrant and real-feeling look into a slice of life in Mexico and into the world of soccer, a game that comes across as wild, political and sometimes more than a little nuts."

Rudo Y Cursi hits theaters in limited release on May 8. Click below to view the full poster.

Stuff We Missed: 'Watchmen' Release, 'Judge Dredd' Art, and More

Previously known as Stuff and Things, Stuff We Missed is exactly that: stuff we missed. Consider this the Costco of blog posts, where you save time and read your movie news in bulk. Yum.

-- Will Watchmen hit theaters on March 6th, as scheduled, or will those evil demons at 20th Century Fox prevent fans from seeing their beloved film on time simply because they hate human beings and everything they stand for? Okay, maybe there's a little more to it, but good news is both sides have agreed to let a judge settle this on January 20th. It's complicated, but we'll know then whether the film will arrive on time or not.

-- Our friends over at io9 came across a few images of early concept art for that new Judge Dredd flick (see them below). These come from comic artist Jock, who also worked on Losers, 2000 A.D and Green Arrow: Year One. The images are all tagged with the name Rebellion, which is the company behind the 2003 Dredd video game, and is also producing the new film.

-- The ASC (American Society of Cinematographers) have dished out their nominations for best of the year, with nods going to Revolutionary Road, The Reader, Slumdog Millionaire (my choice) and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Bernal & Luna Reunite in New Film Backed by Wonder-Trio: Inarritu, Cuaron and del Toro

So, as the story has it, Alejandro González Iñárritu (Babel), Alfonso Cuarón (Children of Men) and Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth) have set up a production company. Eager to start off with a bang, the first feature to be backed by the company is Rudo y Cursi, which to us English-folk is "Rough and Corny." Why is it a bang? First, it was written, and will be directed by, Carlos Cuarón -- Alfonso's brother and co-writer on Y tu mamá también. Second, and more notably for audiences, it will re-team Mama stars Gael García Bernal and Diego Luna. Where Mama dealt with sex and friendship, Rudo is about two brothers who play professional soccer and are embroiled in a life-long competition, while still, as Iñárritu explains: "once again exploring the same themes of rivalry."

Now, let's go over the track record of those involved. Iñárritu is responsible for Amores perros, 21 Grams and Babel; Alfonso has Mama, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Paris, je t'aime and Children of Men; del Toro has Pan's and Hellboy and Carlos has Mama. Then there are Bernal and Luna, who also have their share of cinematic success and on-screen chemistry. As CBC states, the filmmakers are responsible for 16 Academy Award nods all on their own. It's like a paved, golden road that I hope leads to more recognition, and holds up under the weight of acclaim. The film has been in production for a few weeks in the small town of Cihuatlan, near a banana plantation that the Cuarón brothers visited as kids.
