Review: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Theatrical Reviews », Family Films », Summer Movies »

It's a tricky situation -- Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is a strong entry in the series about the boy wizard, but won't work as a stand-alone film. No background is provided, so audience members must have seen the previous movies or read the J.K. Rowling books or they'll be lost. Fortunately, the movie doesn't assume you've read the sixth book -- there are no gaps in the story that require the novel to fill.

In case you haven't read the book, Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) returns to Hogwarts in Half-Blood Prince for his sixth year of study, while Death Eaters terrorize both the magical community and the ordinary Muggle world. Dumbledore (Michael Gambon) trusts Harry with increasingly important tasks in the fight against Voldemort ... and Harry is also learning a lot from an old Potions textbook that contains clever notes from someone self-styled the "Half-Blood Prince." Harry's best friend Ron (Rupert Grint) is taking lessons in Quidditch, self-confidence, and romance -- and why is Hermione (Emma Watson) displeased? Draco lurks in hallways and towers looking pale and conflicted.

Ron Weaseley Has Swine Flu

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy », Newsstand »

It may not be a celebrity story to rival the endless coverage of Michael Jackson's death, but actor Rupert Grint, who plays ginger-kid Ron Weaseley in the Harry Potter films, is reportedly recovering from a mild case of swine flu.

Grint's management said that he took a few days off from work on the adaptation of the series' final book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, which will be released as two movies. The next flick in the franchise, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince hits theaters on July 15.

Swine flu aside, it must be something of a relief for Grint -- along with fellow Potter stars Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson -- to be finally seeing the end of the J.K. Rowling gravy train. While the massively popular film series gave the trio instant celebrity and all the opportunities that brings, they've been chained to the Potter films for half their lives. Grint, who was 13 when he made the first film, turns 21 in August, and seems to have made solid choices so far in building his career. Along with a fair amount of British radio and TV voiceover work, he was praised for his role in 2006's Driving Lessons opposite Laura Linney and Julie Walters.

Lil' Ron Weasley No More -- Check Out Rupert Grint in 'Cherrybomb'!

Filed under: Drama », Independent », Images »

One thing is for certain -- the Harry Potter kids know how to pick roles that really rip them out of the magical world of wizards and spells. First there was Daniel Radcliffe taking it all off in Equus, and now there's Rupert Grint getting down with his bad self for Cherrybomb.

The picture over to the right is just a peek at a few images that have popped up over at MTV. In the film, Grint plays Malachy, this guy who is trying to shmooze his boss' "exotic and fashionable" daughter. But his friend is also charmed by the girl and the two start competing to impress her. (I guess they don't have an "I'll back off if you like her," sort of relationship.) However, the competition doesn't include romantic declarations of love and boxes of chocolate, but rather stunts like stealing a car ... and it escalates from there. Grint says his character is basically good, but a "bit of a thug."

I have to say, I would never have imagined it before seeing these pictures, but Ron Weasley is growing up! Now we just need Emma Watson to grab a brow-raising role and the trio will have done their part to move beyond Hogwarts. The Dreamers 2 ... whaddya think?

New Calendar Images from 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince'

Alejandro Martínez over at BlogHogwarts has sent us a bunch of images from the just-released Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince calender. I know, it's hard to get excited about anything associated with a movie we won't see until July, but a calender can help alleviate your pain by giving you a little dose of Harry Potter all through 2009. Right? Ok, maybe not. You have to hand it to Warner Bros -- of all the franchises to be delayed, none works so well as Harry Potter. It doesn't matter that we don't know the film incarnations of the characters, because we've been living with the Half Blood cast for years on the page. When you think of it that way, all this badly timed merchandise doesn't seem so ridiculous. There's some very cool stills here that I wish was bigger, particularly the troubled Draco Malfoy you can glimpse below. I've enlarged it, but at the cost of the quality -- if someone shells the bucks out for this (I'm looking at you, Emma Watson fans), feel free to send big scans along for your Cinematical friends.

New 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' Pics!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Harry Potter », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

Well, nothing is quite as cool as Luna Lovegood in her Spectrespecs, but there are a few more images from Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince floating around the net (these are courtesy of Ace Showbiz). You can check out Rupert Grint's head-protected Quidditch getup at the dining table with Harry and Hermione above... (Can anyone tell me why he doesn't free his head while he eats? Does he fear that he'll lose his helmet?) And the other pic at AS has got Harry having a pow-wow with Professor Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), who is sporting an affably devilish facial expression.

This time around, Harry is in his 6th year at Hogwarts, and he finds "a potion book signed by the self-titled half-blood prince." There'll be scares for sure, as well as wackiness, and what you can see above -- some good rounds of Quidditch. This will all hit the screen November 21.

Rupert Grint Plans for the Future, Takes Role in Edgy Indie Drama

Filed under: Casting », Celebrities and Controversy », Harry Potter »

Harry Potter has got to end sometime, and by "sometime" I mean in less than three years when the second cinematic half of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows sees release. And some people would like to still have a career when that happens, thank you very much. To that end, Rupert Grint -- a.k.a. Ron Weasley -- has taken a role in an indie film called Cherry Bomb, which sounds about as far from Harry Potter as you can get without developing an erotic fixation on horses.

The film, written by acclaimed playwright Daragh Caville, focuses on three teens who set out for a wild weekend of drugs, sex and crime only to see it escalate into something far more serious than they imagined. It co-stars relative unknowns Robert Sheehan and Kimberley Nixon, and is set for release next year.

While Daniel Radcliffe has tried more extreme methods of branching out (mainly by taking that infamous role in Equus, which is coming to Broadway per the above link) and Emma Watson hasn't done very much at all (she voices a character in this year's The Tale of Despereaux, but that seems to be it), Grint has spent what spare time he has toiling away in indieville. Cherry Bomb was preceded by the reasonably well-received and much less racy Driving Lessons, about a troubled boy's friendship with a retired actress.

Harry Potter Update: Pics of Young Voldemort, Looking Cute and Mostly Harmless

Filed under: Casting », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Harry Potter », Images »

This morning I got an email from Snitchseeker.com, a Harry Potter fansite, pointing me to some pics they have up of young Hero Fiennes-Tiffin (nephew of Ralph Fiennes, who plays the evil Voldemort in the Harry Potter franchise). Fiennes-Tiffin is playing Young Tom Riddle (aka the Future Dark Lord, Voldemort) in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Nice call on the part of the casting director to have a relative of Fiennes play the younger character.

You can see all the pics over on Snitchseeker; they're apparently from another film the young actor is in, Bigga than Ben. Fiennes-Tiffin looks oh-so-sweet-and-innocent -- he hardly looks like the sort who'd grow up to wreak havoc on the wizarding world, tossing around Imperius curses at his enemies and plotting to rid the world of good guys like Albus Dumbledore and Harry Potter. But then again, it's always the innocent looking ones who sneak up on you and turn out to be evil dark lords trying to take over the world, isn't it?

New Promos From 'Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince"!

Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Exhibition », Family Films », Movie Marketing », Harry Potter », Remakes and Sequels », Images »

A bunch of new Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince promotional images have surfaced, thanks to the intrepid reporters at SnitchSeeker. They were spotted at the New York Licensing Expo -- and, funnily enough, the coolest character shots came from the Opal Yarn display. (As a knitter who specializes in such things as Harry Potter scarves and Jayne Cobb hats, I find that quite gratifying.) Tonks' poster is pictured above, and it is definitely my favorite of the bunch. I have included Lupin and Ron after the jump as, frankly, the posters of Harry look vaguely recycled to me. But if you are dying to see the rest, along with some cool new Harry Potter merchandise, visit SnitchSeeker. And thanks to the gang there for sending these along to us. As it is a long time until November 21st, it is nice to have little peeks to keep us going.

Will Jessie Cave Get to Smooch Ron Weasley Next Year?

Filed under: Action », Drama », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », RumorMonger », Family Films », Harry Potter », Remakes and Sequels »

In the last installment of wonderboy magician, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, Daniel Radcliffe's Harry finally got to get his smooch on with Cho Chang. With another book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and older, more insistent adolescent urges, it's Ron Weasley's (Rupert Grint) turn... with a certain girl named Lavender Brown. A whole bunch of hopeful kids, around 7,000, tried out for the role, but a Reuters source says that it has gone to 20-year-old Jessie Cave. The actress hasn't had too much work, but she did appear with Helen Mirren in Inkheart, and will star in a BBC drama called Summerhill next year.

Rupert Grint told CBBC's Newsround: "I was involved with the Lavendar Brown audition and the whole Lavendar thing. Her name's Jessie, and she is really cool, and it's going to be really funny." Man, what a tough job -- getting to go to a casting call and smooching who knows how many girls? I would hope they at least whittled the hopefuls down a little first. While it sounds exciting, smooching 7,000 girls has to give a guy chapped lips, at the very least. Emma Watson, everyone's favorite Hermione, also chimed in about the casting: "She seems really sweet and perfect for the role of Lavender. The casting is so good and I am looking foward to her scenes with Ron. I think it's going to be quite a comic film."

If you're itching to know who else is cast, you won't have to wait too much longer. Reuters says the full cast will be released soon.
