Ryan Reynolds and Anna Faris to Share 'TMI'
There's something to be said for those plain old reliable comedies, those that don't bust guts or break records but are always good for a spin in their inevitable cable circulation, stuff along the lines of Role Models, I Love You, Man and Just Friends. That last one has proven particularly endearing (to me anyway) due to the priceless pairing of Ryan Reynolds' perfect snark with Anna Faris' endearing ditziness (they also went at each other in Waiting..., to much amusement). It's that combination that gives me reason enough for me to care about TMI, an all-too-honest rom-com reuniting these two. Hell, their teaming is itself enough for me to hope that they can do right by a screenplay written by the minds behind Serendipity and The Ugly Truth; after all, Faris did bring all the funny to co-writer Kirsten Smith's The House Bunny.
Not sure how much else there is to say, really. It's like hearing that someone's about to get your sexy, funny peanut butter in your sexy, funny chocolate... all over again.
Jackie Earle Haley Denies Sinestro Talks
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Warner Brothers », RumorMonger », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
You can't keep a good actor out of the comic book flicks. Jackie Earle Haley already has one of the most iconic DC characters notched on his belt, but rumor has it that he might get to pick up another. As you may have read earlier, Ain't It Cool News was reporting that Martin Campbell is in the process of finalizing his cast for The Green Lantern, and that Haley is at the head of the line to play Sinestro.Haley has told Collider that no one has approached him about the part, and that he hasn't been screen tested ... but that doesn't mean he won't be. Haley suggested the Internet generally hears things before he does. "You guys are out in front of it and I don't know anything about it yet. If something comes up I'll let you know."
Even as rumor and guesswork, it's an intriguing possibility. Haley certainly has the villainous chops to pull off Sinestro, and Watchmen proved he had the physical chops. I've always pictured someone British in the role, though, and the best fan suggestion I've seen yet is Daniel Day-Lewis. I doubt the Method actor would ever delve into the world of DC Comics, but oh how wonderful it would be if he'd bring a bit of Daniel Plainview into the Green Lantern Corps.
Is Jackie Earle Haley the 'Green Lantern' Villain?
By: John GholsonIt's strictly a rumor until he signs on the dotted line, but Ain't It Cool News reports that Jackie Earle Haley is the frontrunner to play Sinestro in Martin Campbell's upcoming Green Lantern movie. It's an interesting casting choice, but as a longtime Green Lantern fan, I think I pictured someone a little more slick--not as rugged as Haley--to play Green Lantern's arch-enemy.
For those that are unfamiliar with the character, Sinestro is a power-hungry member of the space-faring Green Lantern Corps, chosen to train Hal Jordan (played in the upcoming film by Ryan Reynolds). Sinestro eventually turns against the Corps and faces off against his pupil.

Ryan Reynolds Looks Like A Lady
When you're a dude who is known for his rocking body, sharp comedic wit, and nabbing two superhero franchises in a single year, how do you prove you're comfortable in your masculinity? Why, you put on a pair of stilettos, apply a hint of lipstick, and go out for a night on the town. It works for Welsh cage fighters and it's the career path Ryan Reynolds is pursuing. Variety reports that he's attached to star in an untitled "dude in drag" romantic comedy for Working Title. Allan Loeb is currently penning the script.Reynolds plays a man who gets dumped, presumably through some fault of his own because he decides that the way to win her back is to befriend her. But naturally, he can't just call her up and say "Can we still be friends? I need you in my life." Instead, he decides to cross-dress as a woman, and become her best girlfriend. Who will bet me good money that she finds herself drawn to this new girl in her life, and decides to "experiment." Thankfully, it's really a man! No worries to the Prop 8 crowd.
I do find Reynolds funny, and he can usually wrench a laugh or two out of the most awkward and tired concepts. "Dude in drag" has been done to death (and then back again with a certain Mrs. Featherbottom) but at least Reynolds will get the chance to play up his cheekbones and eyes.
The Cast of Characters to Be Cast in 'The Green Lantern'

The pre-production world of The Green Lantern went rather quiet after Ryan Reynolds landed the titular role. No one else has been cast, and the biggest news to follow Reynolds was that the filming had moved from Australia to New Orleans, thanks to the rising Australian currency. But SpoilerTV has landed the open casting sheet which reveals just who we can expect to see alongside the Emerald Knight. The lead female character will be Carol Ferris, who is described as "26-32, a smart and attractive woman with an MBA. She started as a pilot and now runs Ferris Aircraft. She is a work-a-holic." That's not straying too far from the comics, as Ferris was the Vice President of her father's company, and was responsible for hiring the handsome Hal Jordan. Naturally, they fell in love but things became rather problematic when she became the villainous Star Sapphire. You might just be seeing the origins of a sequel here.
Next up is Dr. Hector Hammond, "27-35, Character actor who is austere and impersonal, he is real "scummy." He is a pathologist and also the son of a Senator." Hammond is definitely getting a movie makeover, as he's just a petty criminal in the books. Being a comic book, he naturally stumbles upon radiation and uses it for his own moneygrubbing ends, and jumps into supervillain status.
Sinestro is a given, since he's assigned to be Hal's mentor once Jordan joins the Green Lantern Corps. But with a name like Sinestro, you know he isn't going to be a gentle Obi-Wan Kenobi type. I won't get into details, but it's amusing to read what his big screen appearence may be: "Mid-30s to Mid-40s, he is smart, tough, intimidating and in great physical shape." (He was based on David Niven! Intelligent, intimidating sure -- but ripped?)

Ryan Reynolds is The Green Lantern!

In a very surprising move, Ryan Reynolds has won the much-coveted lead role in Warner Bros. live-action version of Green Lantern. We reported earlier this morning that Reynolds was up for the role alongside Bradley Cooper and Justin Timberlake, but thought he'd be a long shot considering the fact that he was also gearing up for a solo Deadpool spin-off. But Green Lantern is definitely a better (and more popular) role for him, and Warners probably liked the fact that Reynolds comes with a nice healthy package full of good looks, charisma and physical force. Dude is huge, he's proven he can handle the superhero stuff (ie: Deadpool in Wolverine), and he's at that sweet spot in his career where something like this could turn him into the next Christian Bale.
Lantern fans will probably agree that he's the best choice, though I'm not crazy about actors who double-dip in the comics world, and I can see people wanting the actor to stick to either one or the other. Production on Green Lantern is set to start in January, with Martin Campbell (Casino Royale) at the helm. The Green Lantern is currently scheduled to hit theaters on June 17, 2011.
So what do you think of Reynolds in the role? Can he pull off both Lantern and Deadpool?
Ryan Reynolds, Bradley Cooper, Justin Timberlake Finalists for 'Green Lantern'

Hal Jordan might just be bringing sexy back. Or he might look an awful lot like Deadpool. Or he might just have a really wicked hangover. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros and director Martin Campbell have narrowed he who will wear the ring to three candidates: afore-mentioned Bradley Cooper , Ryan Reynolds, and Justin Timberlake. (Give one up for Ain't It Cool News, who had Timberlake in the suit on Thursday.) Lest you think these are just overblown screentests, THR reports that Timberlake, Cooper, and Reynolds all had holding deals with the studio, though all three expired Monday. That puts the clock to ticking and will force the studio to make a decision soon, as they'll be free to accept new roles. They've all done two rounds of screen tests, and survived the other finalists, including Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, and Jared Leto.
So, there you have it. My personal pick would be Cooper, because Reynolds is already associated with Deadpool, and I don't like my superheroes crossing over into other superhero roles. I think we all know that if Timberlake nabs the role, all hell is going to break loose, though I'm willing to keep an open mind. The most unlikely choices have consistently worked for superhero roles, and Timberlake could shock everyone. Besides, it's not that hard to see -- he's got the cockiness of a test pilot, the charisma of a superhero, the physicality for the stuntwork, and the cleft chin. He's proved to be a capable actor, and I really think time and experience could make him into a very good one. The only real issue I see with it is that it smacks of stunt casting, and a way to lure in audience members who wouldn't know Abin Sur from Ras al Ghul.
Ryan Reynolds Gets Buried Alive
Filed under: Drama », Independent », Casting », Scripts »
He might grab paychecks for romantic fluff like Definitely, Maybe and The Proposal, but Ryan Reynolds is definitely doing what he can to keep things fresh too. He's got his Deadpool gig, was obsessed with The Nines, and got busy with vamp fighting in Blade: Trinity. But now he's getting buried alive, which should take him to a whole new realm of cinema.Variety reports that he will star in a new film called Buried, which was written by Chris Sparling and will be directed by Rodrigo Cortes. The film will focus on "a civilian contractor who's kidnapped in Iraq and awakens buried in a coffin in the desert, armed only with a cell phone, a candle, and a knife." Are they sure this is Buried? It sounds quite MacGyver to me, and as you know, there is a big-screen to-do on the way.
Anyway, Reynolds has been pretty successful in his career thus far, and a whole heck of a lot of it is do to the actor's charisma. He's just so darned likable. But what happens when all that is ripped away and he's caught in a dark box? There could be some flashbacks or out-of-coffin scenes, but it sounds like we might just get an entire film set in the claustrophobic darkness -- the Variety piece also says he'll hold "the screen through most of the picture." I'm intrigued.
Production begins next month in Barcelona.
Interview: 'The Proposal' Director Anne Fletcher
Filed under: Disney », Interviews »

If the summer movie season wasn't originally designed for guys, it's certainly been appropriated by them, both in theaters and behind the camera. Where the hottest months of the year once served as an even playing field for films of all kinds, they now operate with one edict in mind, bigger is always better, unless you're a shrewd enough filmmaker to find an opening and exploit it with a clever bit of counter-programming. Anne Fletcher hopes to be the exception that proves this rule with the release of The Proposal (which took the number one spot at the box office this past weekend with $34 million) a romantic comedy starring Sandra Bullock. And while there's only two action scenes, one involving falling off of a boat and another about surviving a face-to-crotch attack by an overeager amateur stripper, the film seems poised to capture at least as many female hearts as its competition does male ones.
Cinematical recently spoke to Fletcher via telephone to discuss her work on the film, which is her third directorial effort after the original Step Up and last year's 27 Dresses, in addition to talking about taking a film straight into summer's heart of darkness, she reflects on what if anything her gender means to the movies she makes, and speaks about an early '80s Spielberg movie that still proves inspirational (and it's none of the ones you might think).
Review: The Proposal

I love watching Sandra Bullock, who is enjoyable even in the lamest of films. And sadly, there are so many lame movies starring Bullock, and so few that I would enjoy watching more than once -- Infamous is a rare exception. After I saw Speed, I said that I thought Bullock could be this generation's Carole Lombard, but unfortunately the actress has not yet found her Howard Hawks or Ernst Lubitsch. The Proposal is yet another Bullock-starring formulaic romantic comedy with little to offer except sparkling performances, and not just from Bullock.
Margaret Tate (Bullock) is the terror of the Manhattan publishing office where she's editor-in-chief, and even her charming assistant Andrew (Ryan Reynolds) is scared of her. Her Achilles heel turns out to be that she's ... Canadian, and she's about to be deported for a year due to some visa problems. So Margaret hurriedly declares that she's engaged to Andrew, who's American. You don't have to have seen Green Card to guess the rest of the story.
