After a lot of hemming and hawing, some hopeful casting news, and outrage over McG being attached to direct, it looks like Terminator 4 is good to go.

There are a few things to glean from this Hollywood Reporter story. First, obviously, is what's in the headline: Moon Bloodgood, who played Generic Love Interest in Pathfinder and starred in the canceled television series Journeyman, has been cast as the female lead, a survivor of the nuclear holocaust we witnessed at the end of Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. She joins Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, and Anton Yelchin. Second, notwithstanding earlier reports to the contrary, the third sequel is apparently still called Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins. Finally, the movie is scheduled to begin principal photography on May 5th, which means that barring some Terry Gilliam-scale disaster, this long-speculated-about project is actually happening.

Count me among the McG skeptics. Previous installments of this franchise have been helmed by world-class action movie craftsmen (disclaimer: I am a fan of Jonathan Mostow), and I'm not convinced that McG has either the chops or the instincts to fill their shoes. The mincemeat he made of a terrific story in We Are Marshall doesn't inspire confidence, and the pyrotechnics of the Charlie's Angels films don't tell me much. That said, I'm excited for the Terminator saga to continue, since there's a lot more of this story to tell (and since Google is currently building SkyNet). Has anyone been watching the Fox TV show?

We know Christian Bale will be playing an older John Connor, and there's rumors that Josh Brolin might be in line to play the new (and improved?) Terminator, but now Variety tells us that Sam Worthington has been cast as the other lead; some dude named Marcus. This move is rather interesting, because it means James Cameron (director of Terminator and Terminator 2) has taken a liking to Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins director McG, as Cameron was the one who recommended Worthington for the new job (the actor is also starring in Cameron's Avatar). We're not sure how much influence Cameron is having on the production, but if he's managed to get Worthington into the lead role, I imagine he's offered a bunch of additional advice as well. And that can't be a bad thing.

According to Variety's description, Marcus is "a central figure in a three-picture arc that begins after Skynet has destroyed much of humanity in a nuclear holocaust. A group of survivors led by John Connor (Bale) struggles to keep the machines from finishing the job." Even though McG is at the helm -- and not Cameron -- I'm still looking forward to this one a great deal. Sort of how we were always looking forward to a Star Wars film set during the Clone Wars; well, same goes for a Terminator film set in the future. I'm already imagining some kickass battle sequences involving a small group of humans and a slew of Terminator robots. Could be very very cool. The first of the three films, Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins, is due out in the summer of 2009.

Sure, it's very helpful to have a cast in place before starting a flick. James Cameron's Avatar already has the likes of the soon-to-be-Uhura Zoe Saldana, the toughest chick to ever hit space -- Sigourney Weaver, all-around tough girl Michelle Rodriguez, quirky Giovanni Ribisi, and the underworld Macbeth, Sam Worthington. But even with tough, female topliners, and epic Ripley, you need to have a lead villain to create all the thrilling space action. Variety reports that this will be none other than Matt Gerald. ...Who?

The actor, who looks like a real-life Hitman, is jumping into the role from much smaller stints in films like Magnolia (Officer #2), T3 (SWAT Team Leader), and xXx (Liebo). He's also just finished working on the Chuck Palahniuk adaptation, Choke, where he plays Detective Ryan. Now, Avatar is about the clashing between a humanoid race on their home planet of Pandora, and those from Earth who settle in and are at odds with them. It's sounding kind of like Dune meets the Mayflower. Pandora has all sorts of treasures and resources, and those darned Earth people want it for themselves, which leads to a battle for survival. Now we've just got to wait and see if Gerald can stand up to Weaver, Saldana, and Rodriguez.

One of the most highly anticipated movies on the horizon is James Cameron's Avatar, slated for release in 2009. The film marks Cameron's return to a genre he pretty much defined in the 80's and early 90's -- science fiction. Avatar has a budget of $200 million, it will be projected in 3-D, and will contain sure-to-be-mind-blowing special effects designed by Cameron and Peter Jackson's effects company -- Weta. Not much is known about the film at this point, but we do know that it stars Miss Aliens herself, Sigourney Weaver, and Australian actor Sam Worthington. Worthington's not well known here yet, but he played the title role in the 2006 version of Macbeth. Cameron favorite Michael Biehn is rumored to be attached as well, which would be awesome. There's a lot of secrecy surrounding the project, but Weaver talked it up a bit to Hit while on a break from the film.

"It's a fantastic movie. So ambitious. So romantic and sweeping. I can't wait to get back," says Weaver, who will play a botanist (hopefully an ass-kicking botanist) and mentor to Worthington's character. Weaver describes Worthington as "a terrific actor, he really is. And a lovely guy. I think he's going to do a wonderful job. His humor and charm and just genuineness as a person are very evident as soon as you start working with him." Any chance we can get some juicy details, Miss Weaver? "I'm not allowed to give too much away, but we have parallel adventures. There's a younger person's story and a smaller, older person's story all happening at the same time. All my scenes are with [Worthington]. It's really a lovely relationship." Parallel older/younger stories, eh? Sounds a bit Titanic-y. Speaking of Sigourney, can I just beg for a moratorium on these DirecTV ads that brutally assault my childhood memories? I don't need to hear Doc Brown and Ellen Ripley begging me to switch cable companies. It really stings.

Finally, James Cameron's upcoming film Avatar is starting to grow from its humble Project 880 rumored beginnings.* Avatar is summed up by the rather interesting description of "a love story set against an interplanetary war," and it is possible no humans will be featured in the film. The big news of today is on the casting front, and it comes from Down Under. Australian actor Sam Worthington, who is slowly building his resume, says he is in the running to play Cameron's leading man. We don't know who else is being considered, but Worthington indicates the choice is between himself "and a Hollywood name." I suppose we'll find out before too long, as Cameron is on the move and hopes to begin filming as early as November.

At this point, I really have no vested interest in the casting of this film, but I am exceptionally curious to see what Cameron will do with a battle-filled sci-fi-romance story. Aside from a rather intriguing plot, it'll be fun to see the worlds he constructs. Cameron is a talented visual director, and unleashing him upon outer space set locations could be a real treat.

*Okay, so Avatar was a rumor first, quite some time ago. Then Project 880, which turned out to just be Avatar again.
