Tatum O'Neal Gets Busted for Buying Crack Cocaine
Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy »
There was no Saving Grace for Tatum O'Neal over the weekend. AOL reports that the actress (who won an Oscar many moons ago, at the age of 10, for her supporting role in Paper Moon) was arrested yesterday for buying crack cocaine in the Big Apple. Just four years after the actress wrote a memoir about her struggles to get sober, she was arrested on the Lower East Side after she was seen buying the drugs from a dealer. She is being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, which is a misdemeanor. O' Neal apparently claimed she was "doing research" for an upcoming role as a junkie. Um, sure you were.According to IMDb, she's currently filming a television movie called Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal, but she's also wrapped the Connie Stevens-helmed flick, Saving Grace, which I told you about last year. The latter might prove to be eerie in light of the actress' personal struggles. She plays a sister in 1950s Missouri who leaves a local asylum to live with her brother and his wife. The movie should be released some time this year, although no specific date has been released yet.
Is Bailey Chase in Talks to Play Gambit in 'Wolverine'?

The simple fact that former Buffy star Bailey Chase chose the Sunday Star Times in New Zealand to drop this particular bomb has me inclined to think it's a long way from becoming fact. In a recent profile about his work on TNT's Saving Grace with Holly Hunter when he told the reporter that he was in negotiations for a part in X-Men Origins: Wolverine with Hugh Jackman. According to Chase, "It's very confidential and top-secret. I think they're casting under alias names but for now, he's called Mr Yellow."Chase had few details, but he was willing to say that the part is described as "about 30 years old, a charming southern guy on the surface but he's got some ulterior motives going on underneath. By the end of the film, he's probably not going to be such a nice guy". Back in October, Variety had reported that the film was securing locations in Louisiana, which sparked tons of speculation that the film would be including Gambit. Throw in Chase's comments about a "southern gentleman with ulterior motives" and the Gambit connection seems even more likely. Even with the little amount of knowledge that I have about the character of Gambit in the original X-Men series, I think it sounds like the infamous Remy LeBeau.
According to previous reports, the film is going to center on "the claw-wielding character Wolverine's violent and romantic past, and his complex relationship with Victor Creed and the ominous Weapon X program, as well as his encounters with other mutants." I guess we can chalk that up to be another piece of evidence that the Louisiana 'card shark' might be making an appearance. Stay tuned to Cinematical for the official word when and if it ever comes. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is set for release on May 9th, 2009.

Connie Stevens Jumps Behind the Camera
Filed under: Drama », Casting », Scripts »
We always hear about big actors and actresses jumping behind the camera to whet their other cinematic appetites, but how often does it happen with a highly-recognizable television guest-stinter, movie actress, and singer who is one year away from 70? The Hollywood Reporter has posted that Connie Stevens is currently directing and producing a film called Saving Grace, which she also wrote; the story is influenced by a personal experience Stevens had years ago in Boonville, Mo., during severe floods. This is her first fictional feature, although ten years ago, she did write and direct a documentary about women in Vietnam called A Healing. And, to make things sweeter -- she's got a pretty solid cast.Penelope Ann Miller (Blonde Ambition) and Michael Biehn (The Terminator) play a couple named Bea and Landy Bretthorse, who live in a Missouri town during the 1950s. Their lives are "thrown into chaos when Landy's sister Grace (Tatum O'Neal) is released from the local asylum and comes to live with the family." Joel Gretsch (The Emperor's Club) will play Grace's ex-husband, who was married to her for one whopping day, and Piper Laurie (Hounddog) is the administrator who runs the asylum. Apparently, the floods play a pivotal role in the story, but I imagine the insanity is where the fiction comes in. The film is currently on location in Missouri.
