Soul Surfer Gets a Director, Now Needs a Star

Talk has been underway for a while now about a possible movie adaptation of Soul Surfer, a biography of 16-year old competitive surfer Bethany Hamilton, whose life took a horrific turn in 2003 when her left arm was bitten off by a tiger shark in the Hawaii surf. Australia's Sunday Times is now reporting progress on the project. They have declared that director Sean McNamara, who is currently in pre-production on Bratz: The Movie, has attached himself to direct the film. The paper also reports that "casting is now underway" and that the film will carry the same title as the book.

No further information about the casting process is given, although for some reason, my mind immediately went to Keira Knightley for the role. She may be five or so years too old for the part, but the age difference isn't critical to the story and she would probably be a good fit for the material. Bethany Hamilton famously returned to surfing just ten weeks after losing her arm, and began using a custom-made surf board to accommodate her needs. In 2004, she won an ESPY award for Best Comeback Athlete of the Year. Also in 2004, MTV Books put out the book which tells about her life and its tragic twist.

Paula Abdul Joins The Bratz Movie

So it is not exactly a big shock that I am not the biggest fan of Bratz dolls, but there are plenty of people who are, so that's probably why a live action movie is on the way. The story will follow our four heavily stylized friends through the pitfalls of peer pressure and fitting in, and all while draped in belly chains and eye makeup -- like I said, I'm not a big fan.

Variety announced that Paula Abdul would be joining Bratz – The Movie as a consultant for fashion, dancing, casting and music. Abdul started her career as a dancer and choreographer so I would think she might manage to squeeze in a dance number or two. Abdul will also be getting an executive producer credit on the film and will help in finding "talent" for the production. No casting announcements have been made yet, so I would guess that would be the first order of business. The film's director Sean McNamara, who is known for his work with the "tween set," is set to begin filming later this month and is eyeing an August release. No word on whether her duties as consultant and producer will cut into her busy schedule of giving nonsensical encouragement to American Idol hopefuls, but I'm sure Abdul will find time to fit it in her busy schedule.
