Review: G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra

I have a colleague who is offended by the idea that one should have to watch movies or perceive entertainment through the eyes of "their inner nine-year-old." This of course is the suggestion, or more often, the defense many mount against movies that grown-ups would potentially want to see, but probably not enjoy, because, quite frankly, they're stupid, or poorly done, or quickly undone if any sense of logic or thought is applied to them. And while I agree with the notion that entertainment needn't be only for kids, or intelligence exist in the exclusive province of adulthood, there is something to be said for abandoning one's usual barriers of cynicism – or, to be fair, even just familiarity with storytelling conventions – in the service of enjoying something unabashedly, and against all common sense. This brings me to G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.

It's entirely possible that if I were nine or ten, the age that I first discovered the animated series, then G.I. Joe would be my favorite movie of all time. It features colorful, iconic characters, huge action scenes, and a plot that I'd feel smart for having figured out. As an adult, however, its shortcomings are obvious: thin, one-dimensional characters, death and destruction on an irresponsibly epic scale, and a nonsensical plot that I'd be depressed to have to try and "figure out." But G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra was made for my nine-year-old self, and the nine-year-old in all of our selves; and while it certainly doesn't hold up to the scrutiny of a more mature or sophisticated perspective, it's a surprisingly fun time at the movies that reminds us we needn't be children in order to enjoy something the same way as when we were.

Sienna Miller Gets Feisty with Aussie Radio for 'G.I. Joe' Junket

Filed under: Action », Paramount », Celebrities and Controversy », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

I remember once watching an interview with R&B superstar Patti LaBelle and when they asked her about the state of celebrity gossip and the paparazzi, this was her sage advice (and I'm paraphrasing): "If you don't want your picture taken sit your a** at home". Now normally I would agree with her, but when it comes to British 'It' girl, Sienna Miller, I don't think that particular rule applies, because if it did, she might never get to leave her house again. During a radio interview with Australia's Matt & Jo, the actress got a little testy when the topic of her alleged-boyfriend Balthazar Getty came up in the conversation (the interview, which you can listen to below, takes place at the beginning of the recording). It all started to go downhill when Miller took offense to some of the DJ's comments and called him a "d-bag" and "misogynist". But when Getty's name came up things went from bad to worse and the interview is cut painfully short.

Miller should know better than anybody the power of an unkind word, because from the moment she arrived on the scene as 'the other woman', the knives have been out. She's become a tabloid staple and has even had her home vandalized thanks to characterizations about her personal life. Unfortunately, her career has taken a back-seat to her love life, and she has yet to have a hit (critically or commercially). G.I. JOE was her first chance at a starring role in a big-budget action flick, and maybe finally to make a name for herself as something other than some married guy's girlfriend. But if this interview is any indication of Miller's future relationship with the press, I don't see them backing off any time soon. Listen to the interview below.

So what do you think? Was Miller out of line, or was it about time she said enough is enough?

Exclusive Clip from 'The Edge of Love'

Filed under: Drama », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Images », Trailers and Clips »

Cinematical
has just received this exclusive clip from The Edge of Love, and while we won't spoil it for you, we will say that it features Keira Knightley and Sienna Miller rubbing, hugging and touching one another. Um, yeah. Seriously, though, The Edge of Love is quietly sneaking up on all of us with its solid ensemble cast (Knightley, Miller, Cillian Murphy and Matthew Rhys) and fascinating story somewhat based on real events surrounding poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys) and the two crazy women vying for his attention.

Poets are nuts -- and the people who fall in love with poets are even nuttier (don't look at me; I'm a blogger, not a poet). Check out the scene below, along with a whole bunch of images; The Edge of Love hits theaters in Los Angeles on March 13 and New York on March 20.

Will Cate Blanchett Save 'Nottingham'?

Filed under: Action », Casting », RumorMonger », Celebrities and Controversy »

Does it make me a bad person that I couldn't have been happier when Sienna Miller and Nottingham decided to go their separate ways? Nothing personal, but I wasn't envisioning Miller fairing too well up against a dramatic heavy like Russell Crowe. Luckily, for those of out there who still think that Nottingham has a chance of being a darn good flick, there is a light on the horizon and her name is Cate Blanchett. During an event for the London Film Critics' Circle Awards, newly arrived Nottingham cast member, Mark Strong told the UK Telegraph, "I think Cate Blanchett is set to take the Maid Marian part," Strong went on to sing the praises of the Aussie actress and told the Telegraph, "She is a wonderful actress and it would make it a much classier film if she was in it." -- Amen to that brother.

For those of you who haven't been following the travails of Scott's Robin Hood update, here is a quick little primer: First up were those bogus script reports that made Crowe's choice of dual roles sound like a bad episode of The Bobbsey Twins. But the hits kept coming, and next up was a shutdown on the set, unflattering stories that Crowe and Scott were at each other's throat, and finally Sienna Miller got the old heave-ho thanks to Crowe's so-called "gross" appearance, or her bad acting (depending on who you believe) -- not exactly the kind of anecdotes you want to end up on the DVD commentary.

New 'G.I. Joe' Posters -- Now with More Torso!

Making a great movie poster is an art, but making a so-so one? That seems to be something that any studio can do. There are now four new character posters for the feature film version of the Real American Hero, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, and for those of you who were disappointed after only receiving head shots in the last round of one-sheets -- well, you aren't going to be much happier (that is, unless you have a torso fetish). The latest batch (see below) showcase Duke, Ripcord, Snake Eyes, Scarlett and The Baroness all in their best leather fightin' gear, which might not be much to write home about, although, I'm sure fanboys will be pleased with the tight leather outfits sported by Scarlett (Rachel Nichols) and The Baroness (Sienna Miller).

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra is set ten years in the future, and, like the title says, will center on the origins of the Cobra Organization. It would seem that it will be origin stories all around, as Stuart Beattie's script also puts Duke (Channing Tatum) and Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) at the center of the action with their induction into the Joe team.

You would think that for a film expected to be a big hit this summer, there would be a little more 'oomph' injected into their marketing. But, I guess it wasn't meant to be ... yet ... and for now we're going to have to suck it up and deal with all these posters. However, there is one notable exception in all of the posters so far, and it is probably the one fans are most anxious about: good old Cobra Commander himself (as played by *Jason Joseph Gordon Levitt). Surprisingly, any images of Cobra have remained under lock and key, so I guess we'll have to keep our fingers crossed that he makes an appearance in the Superbowl trailer.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra will arrive in theaters on August 7, 2009. Check out the new and old posters below.

Rumor: Sienna Miller Fired From 'Nottingham' for Being Too Hot?

Filed under: Action », Casting », Universal », RumorMonger »

The bad news just keeps coming for Ridley Scott's revisionist take on Robin Hood; delays, confusions over the script -- heck, even the foliage wasn't cooperating. But, this latest piece of gossip to hit the web confirms that no matter how you slice it, all is not well in Sherwood Forest. The latest blow to the beleaguered flick (as reported by the New York Post) is that Sienna Miller has now been fired from her role as Maid Marian in the action adventure.

So what could have prompted the casting change? According to those wags at The Post, Ms. Miller was just too darn sexy. A source was quoted as saying, "It is a mess. Russell never lost the weight he put on for 'Body of Evidence' - and so the love scenes between him and Sienna would have been laughable. He's so old and fat and she's so young and gorgeous. It's just . . . gross." Pretty mean stuff, although it's kind of nice to see male stars getting the heat for body image for a change. The source also went on to say that producers were going to look for a new co-star that was a little closer in size, and age to Crowe.

The official word from the set was that Miller was "released" from her contract, but producers gave no further details as to the reason for her departure. News of a troubled set has been leaking for some time, along with rumours of battles between Scott and Crowe escalating out of control (which has since been publicly denied by Crowe and Scott's agent).

So do you think that Nottingham can ever come back from all of the bad publicity? And does it matter what people are saying during production if the finished product kicks ass?

New 'G.I. Joe' Character Posters

Filed under: Action », Paramount », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Images », War », Posters »

It's only the middle of December, and already I feel like Summer 2009 is just around the corner. It feels like I was bombarded with Terminator: Salvation and X-Men Origin: Wolverine all weekend, and now G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra is coming back into the mix of things with a few new character posters. They're not entirely new, as they first appeared over the summer at a licensing fair, but have been scanned online for the first time thanks to Film.ru. There's four in all -- Duke, Snake Eyes, Baroness, and Ripcord, and all four have been added to the GI Joe gallery below. Unfortunately, they haven't appeared in a big, hi-res version yet.

Paramount might want to reconsider the design since they look just like the Star Trek character posters. You can't have people wandering into Trek, and wondering where the heck Snake Eyes is. G.I. Joe is the All American Hero! Make these screamingly obvious -- red, white, and blue all the way! At least throw in the camoflauge I remember (and probably wrongly) from the packaging. None of this classiness and silver font -- that has to be left for Mission: Impossible installments.

Sienna Miller's New Cleavage: G.I. Whoa!

Filed under: Action », Paramount », Celebrities and Controversy », Comic/Superhero/Geek », War »

Fair warning: This is a slight, trivial, and practically meaningless piece of upcoming movie news -- but it touches on three things we love here at Cinematical: Action movies based on cartoons based on ancient marketing campaigns, horny directors, and fake breasts. Here we go:

According to SFGate's Hot Dish blog, sexy actress Sienna Miller was forced to wear fake hooters so as to accentuate her cleavage in the upcoming G.I. Joe movie. Ms. Miller will be playing The Baroness, and apparently her god-given boobies were not adequate in the eyes of director Stephen Sommers. ("'I'm gonna be honest, I like girls with big boobs," is what the director told her. Strange comment from a guy whose leading ladies have been Famke Janssen, Rachel Weisz, and Kate Beckinsale, three gorgeous women who aren't exactly D-cups.)

Ms. Miller notes that she was "mildly offended" by the breast issue, and I'm kind of surprised that the topic didn't come up before her first costume fitting, but hey ... The Baroness is pretty stacked. Perhaps Mr. Sommers is just trying to remain faithful to the source material -- or yeah, maybe he just likes big boobs. Lord knows the target demographic for G.I. Joe loves boobs. Check out images of Sienna as The Baroness in the gallery below.

Christian Bale Out, Sam Riley to Play Robin Hood?

The Nottingham rumors are flying as thick as, well, the trees of Sherwood Forest. Both CHUD and Ain't It Cool News, who apparently share the same source, are adamant that Christian Bale will not be playing Robin Hood in Ridley Scott's reinterpretation of the classic tale. So, as exciting as the idea of seeing Bale and Russell Crowe square off again is, it will have to wait for another film. Oddly, I find the news a relief. I like Bale immensely, but there are only so many icons a man should play in his career!

But, there's a new name being tossed about. Latino Review reports that Sam Riley, who played the troubled Ian Curtis in Control, is rumored to be in the running. Not only that, but Russell Crowe is said to be championing his casting. Whatever, and whoever, Crowe wants, he usually gets. So, if you look to your right, you may be looking at the latest incarnation of Robin Hood.

Riley is certainly closer to Sienna Miller's age, thus making the love triangle between Maid Marian, Robin and Nottingham a bit more complex. (And palatable to all of us leery of the age gap between Miller and Crowe.) He is certainly a fresh choice, and the role would lend itself to a talented newcomer. We shall soon see! Meanwhile, sound off below -- is Riley a good fit for the man in green? Or are you off the project for good now that Bale is out of the running?

Sienna Miller is Maid Marian of 'Nottingham'

Am I the only one who hears Bryan Adams singing that cheesy love song each and every time Ridley Scott's new Robin Hood flick gets a mention? I can't help it, the damn song is just there. It's burned into my big-screen Robin Hood memories and it won't go away. Help! But enough about me -- the BBC tells us Sienna Miller has officially confirmed that she will be playing the lovely Maid Marian in Nottingham, opposite Russell Crowe's Sheriff of Nottingham. Says Maid Miller: "It's happening. I just found out. It's the most exciting news in the world. It's ridiculous. But there's this looming actor's strike, so it's not 100% sure that it's going to be made, but it's looking pretty certain."

Hopefully we'll avoid this whole actor's strike thingy, because I'm honestly very interested in seeing what Ridley Scott, Russell Crowe and Sienna Miller do with the Robin Hood story -- especially since they're sort of flipping it so that the Sheriff is a bit more sympathetic and Robin is, well, nothing but a street hood ... or something like that. Oh, and there's a love triangle. No word yet on who they'll get to play the legendary Robin Hood, though I wouldn't mind seeing Orlando Bloom in the role. Thoughts?

Nottingham is currently scheduled to hit theaters on November 6, 2009.
