'Scream IV' Set with Neve Campbell Returning

Filed under: Horror », Casting », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »

Who knows what finally convinced Neve Campbell to return to the Scream franchise, but according to Variety (and Bob Weinstein), she'll join both Courteney Cox and David Arquette in a fourth installment set to begin production in April or May. This fourth installment will be the first in a new trilogy, and The Weinstein Co. is in talks with Wes Craven to helm at least the first film. No word on whether Campbell and the Cox-Arquette duo will stay on past the first flick or be hacked up five minutes in (I'd vote for the latter).

The Weinstein Co. have been battling rumors of money trouble for awhile now, letting go of employees and delaying films due to lack of funds and manpower. Now, though, Bob Weinstein says the company will be returning to some of the franchises that helped produce box office, and in addition to three new Scream films, they're bringing Robert Rodriguez back to write and direct Spy Kids IV in 3D, with production on that set to begin in March of 2010 (so much for Sin City 2 ...). Also on the agenda for Weinstein is a third Halloween movie in 3D, as well as remakes of Hellraiser, Scanners (in 3D), Short Circuit and American Werewolf in London. On whether Weinstein will be able to handle all these films without bankrupting the company or delaying release dates for years on end, Bob notes, " ... there is no question that financing is readily available to produce and market these films."

Guess we'll see about that ...

SDCC Interview: Robert Rodriguez

We spoke to Robert Rodriguez on video at Comic-Con, and then we sat down with him for a full interview to get an update on all of his projects, and to find out about his upcoming movie Shorts. He's definitely a man wearing a lot of hats, since he writes, directs, edits, scores, does special effects, and produces. In fact, just about the only thing he doesn't do in these films is act. He brought us up to date on Red Sonja, Sin City 2 and Predators, and spoke about being back at Comic-Con.

Read on after the break for his full interview, including more about Shorts and how his kids help inspire his movies. It's just after the jump, and is (mostly) free of information about who he's dating.

Who Wants to Buy 'Sin City'?

Sin City is the series that just can't catch a break. Last week, IESB.net was reporting that the Weinstein Company / Dimension had lost the rights to Sin City, and that the franchise was being quietly shopped around. The rumors were hotly denied by the Weinsteins ... but now The Hollywood Reporter is saying the same darn thing.

While the Weinsteins continue to maintain that they hold the rights, producers all around town are saying that Frank Miller's "estate" has been shopping around those same rights. It's unclear if they have lapsed due to the failure to renew or move on the property, but it seems strange that they could have expired so soon.

This is a rumor that I think we all hope comes true. I'd like to see Sin City land at a studio willing to actually put A Dame to Kill For into production instead of just talking about it. It's been four (count 'em, four) years since Sin City, with "production starting in a matter of weeks!" reports being issued every three months or so. The talent remains enthusiastic and attached. Fans are clamoring for the rest of the sleazy series. It's a no brainer for any other studio, but the Weinstein Company seems to believe delaying films until the end of the world is a sound business principle.

What would you like to see ultimately happen with the next Sin City movie, and who do you think would take the best care of it?

Jolie in "Serious Talks" for 'Sin City 2'?

I guess there can be no other Dame to Kill For. Ever since news started seeping out about a Sin City sequel focusing on A Dame to Kill For, Angelina Jolie's name has been there. However, for the most part, she seemed indifferent to the whole thing. In fact, last June she said she didn't know if she'd take on the part: "I found the first Sin City impressive, but I don't know what they're going to do with the next one to make [it] as original as the first one." But yet again, she's linked with the Dame.

A "rather high-profile producer friend" told Moviehole that Jolie is now in serious talks to star in Sin City 2. I'd take this all with a grain of salt until some firm dates or plans are set. This has been in the so-called "works" for years now, and as Moviehole says: "We're told that the long-gestating sequel is inching forward a little faster than it was, say, six months ago." That's definitely not the confidence one would hope to hear about this sucker.

Perhaps that's due to the gestation and struggle to get the actors back. In December, Mickey Rourke didn't sound too keen on the idea of returning, but it sounded half like disinterest in the role, and half like he was ticked with how long it was taking: "That's not a reality right now. It's pissing in the wind."

Is this pissing in the wind? Will Jolie ever be A Dame to Kill For? Will this project ever truly get off the ground?

No 'Sin City 2' for Mickey Rourke?

Filed under: Action », Thrillers », Casting », Noir », Mystery & Suspense », RumorMonger », The Weinstein Co. », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

I cringe a little whenever Sin City 2 hits my RSS feed, because the news is generally vague and rarely good. Last week, I noted in passing that Mickey Rourke and Frank Miller were ready for the sequel, and that it could shoot as early as next April. Rosario Dawson also confirmed all of the above to ISEB.net, and added that she was on board too.

Well, it seems Rourke wasn't ready -- in fact, he may not return at all. ComingSoon caught up with him at a junket for The Wrestler, and Rourke abruptly denied all of the above. "No, I'm not interested in that right now. That's not a reality right now. It's pissing in the wind. There's different factions going different directions there. I don't know. That's three hours of make up and I'm claustrophobic, so I'm going to have to work something out."

This is probably just Rourke being Rourke -- tomorrow he could be on board again, and tomorrow all Sin City 2 talk could vanish anyway. However, if he means it (and the make-up is something he brought up with MTV as well), that's not to say that Sin City 2 would be impossible to do without Marv. Any sequel was supposed to revolve around A Dame to Kill For anyway, where pre-Hard Goodbye Marv disappears about halfway in, so it is possible to comfortably write him out. Still, it would have been kind of fun to see a "midquel" onscreen, wouldn't it?

Geek Daily: Bryan Singer & Superman, Punisher's Future, and More

  • Thanks to the Valkyrie junkets, Bryan Singer is having to talk about the Superman reboot. UGO pinned him down, and the answers were noncommittal to say the least. At this point, he is not "officially involved" but is not divorced from Superman. "You know, I have relationships with Warner Brothers and with the character and, and, and, and it's just the way things work out. " Doesn't sound hopeful, does it?
  • If Punisher: War Zone does well, you'll see a return of Ray Stevenson in the title role -- and Stevenson, who was unfamiliar with Frank Castle and comics in general, already has his favorite stories picked out. "I'm signed up. We'll have to see if this works, but we'd all love to see the franchise continue, and there's certainly stories to tell. There's a storyline about white slavers and prostitution that I loved. There was also a series where he gets out of the States and goes to Afghanistan. The Man of Stone sequence in connection with the SAS guy. There's a great character who's a law enforcement agent, the wife of a double agent. She's a fantastic character --very in your face -- and I'd love to do something with her. We'll see what happens with this one." [Mania.com]
  • Speaking of sequels, both Frank Miller and Mickey Rourke are, like most of the world, ready for Sin City 2. Miller told IGN.uk that the script is finished, that it's a matter of working out production details -- but they could start shooting as early as April. Rourke merely told MTV that he was ready. Way back in July, Robert Rodriguez smiled coyly and said he was "reassessing," being focused on a fall project that never was revealed. Anyone else think Sin City is as finished as our Thanksgiving turkey? Then again, with Miller having director cred now, he might just take it over altogether.

Ridiculous 'Spirit' Scene Leaks Online

Filed under: Action », Noir », Lionsgate Films », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Trailers and Clips »

When he's not covering film for us, Christopher Campbell is out living a bold double life, instead covering film for Spout Blog, and by way of his derring-do, he's come across a relatively watchable bootleg of some of the ill-received Comic-Con footage from The Spirit, and to borrow his incredibly apt reaction: "The scene you heard about is actually worse than you imagined."

Their Kevin Kelly tried to warn us, as did our own Elisabeth Rappe, and the latest trailer brought forth its own wave of doubt, but witnessing it for myself is something else. I can't speak for Will Eisner's original comic-book creation, though a couple of my pals have assured me that Frank Miller's take on the material is pretty far from it, and while I'm down for a Sin City 2, I'd really rather it be a more intentional affair than this likely farce.

Are any of you fans still willing to give this project the benefit of the doubt, or are toilet-smashing gags the new par for the course?

Angelina Jolie and the World of 'Sin City'

The buzzing murmur for Sin City 2 has been going on for eons now, making fans die a slow death in anxious anticipation. And, for most of that time, Angelina Jolie's name has been in the mix. Back in 2006, Rosario Dawson said that Robert Rodriguez was putting the whole thing on hold due to Jolie's pregnancy. Since then, the project has remained in limbo -- a will they or won't they cycle that doesn't look like it will wrap up any time soon.

But now MTV has talked to Jolie about the potential project while discussing her new film, Wanted. Will she take on Ava Lord in A Dame to Kill For? "I don't know. I found the first Sin City impressive, but I don't know what they're going to do with the next one to make [it] as original as the first one." Well, it's more story on the folks of Sin City, so I imagine it will be a bunch of fresh chills and thrills in the same style -- I'm not so sure what originality she's hoping for.

Now, she did go on to say she would be curious if she was offered the role. I can't tell if she's being polite, or really interested. However, aside from her upcoming delivery and family tending, there's not a lot on her plate, so I imagine it would be easy to slip another dose of Sin City in. Is it time for the Dame? And should Jolie be Ava Lord?

'Shorts' Gets a Script Review

It's not easy reconciling the two sides of Robert Rodriguez. One likes to make pseudo-schlock flicks with machine-gun-leg chicks, and the other likes to make kids movies -- not exactly an expected transition is it? Latino Review has posted a script review for Rodriguez's latest kiddie romp, Shorts. So let's get right to the point, shall we? Review's scooper liked what he saw. Sure there were some complaints, and we'll get to those in a moment, but overall it's a solid thumbs up.

Shorts is the story of Toe Jackson, a young boy in a Texas subdivision who narrates four stories set in the heart of the suburban neighborhood. Now for the bad news. According to the review, the script is a little heavy on the "fart jokes" -- also, it may be a little too focused on the boys. This is a shame considering what a great young female character Rodriguez created in Spy Kids. Then again, he also managed to make a list of the most misogynistic flicks, but I digress. The reviewer also had some complaints about character names, because the script is loaded with cutesy ones like Loogie and Nose.

It's likely that most of Rodriguez's fans are focused squarely on the long awaited sequel to Sin City, not to mention those of you out there hankering for a full-length Machete feature, so Shorts probably won't be high on your list of priorities. If, however, you've got some rug rats at home, then you might want to get used to the idea of seeing this movie in theaters. Shorts is tentatively scheduled for release in 2009.

Comic-Con: Rosario Dawson on the OCT Movie, 'Sin City 2' and Quentin Tarantino

After braving the huge throng last night during Preview Night, it's Thursday in San Diego and that means its panel time. So, both Kevin and I will be slogging through the San Diego Convention Center to bring you as much info as we can during the next four days. First up for me today is actress/comic book creator Rosario Dawson and her panel where she discusses her comic book Occult Crimes Taskforce (aka OTC), its success, its future and when (or if) It's ever going to be made into a movie. Well, if you're a fan of the comic book and Ms. Dawson, I won't leave you in suspense any longer: it will be a movie.

In fact, the project was originally conceived as both a comic book and a movie from the beginning. At the moment, however, according to the actress herself, they are "still negotiating a few things and working to find a writer at the moment." So, apparently no firm deal is in place for the movie version of the comic but they do plan on doing a movie eventually and are actively searching for a screenwriter to translate the comic to the screen.

During the panel Dawson also went on to discuss various other aspects of her career, her future acting plans and her love of comic books. On the film front, the actress reveled that there will be a Sin City 2 but that "Robert (Rodriguez) is doing Barbarella first" so don't expect to see it for awhile.

She also discussed her feature producing debut Descent, which deals with some "pretty heavy subjects like rape and sexual violence" as well a her love of all-things Quentin Tarantino, whom she refers to repeatedly as a "genius" and a "phenomenon." So, if you want to keep enjoying some OCT goodness, you'll have to be content with the comic for now. Anxiously waiting for Sin City 2? Settle in as it looks to be quite some time before it gets made.
