Familiar Hero to Kill Numerous Villains in 'Rambo 5'
Filed under: Action », Independent », Thrillers », Deals », Lionsgate Films », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Remakes and Sequels »
You can't keep a good Sylvester Stallone hero down, even if they should have been dead ten or twenty times over through the course of their 1980s careers. John Rambo is set to take another step towards complete and utter immortality as Variety reports that Stallone is officially putting a fifth Rambo film into production. Stallone has been avidly talking about a fifth Rambo for nearly two years, and last anyone heard, was debating whether to set it in Austria or America. But seeing as there's not a ton of John Rambo-esque conflict in Austria at the moment, and Rambo did show him back on U.S. soil, he's opted for the latter. The storyline finds our hero on the U.S.-Mexican border, fighting through human traffickers and drug lords in order to rescue a young kidnapped girl. (Actually, I can see the exact same movie set in Austria, but Stallone & Company probably realized it would be too close to the story of Taken. Or maybe they really did opt in favor of geographical continuity.)
Lest you think this is just talk, Nu Image / Millennium Films have officially green-lit the film, and it's set to begin production in the spring. I know I should be really critical of this and roll my eyes, but I can't help it. There's something very comforting in seeing an old warhorse continue to unleash semi-automatic hell on those most deserving of it.
Brittany Murphy is Another One of 'The Expendables'
It's been awhile since we heard anything about Brittany Murphy, but that'll change this week, at least when it comes to a certain "expendable" Twitter feed, because Murphy has just found herself among the rough and tumble boys of The Expendables. If you're hoping she puts on some fatigues, straps on some semi-automatics, and helps take down that South American dictator ... sorry, but no. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she's playing Mickey Rourke's girlfriend, and probably the only major female role of the film. The girlfriend is a musical lass, and so Murphy will actually perform a musical number at some point in order to break up the testosterone. Perhaps one of the other expendables will fall in love with her in order to remind us that despite hanging in an all-male mercenary unit, they're totally straight. In fact, I'm willing to bet that's precisely what happens.
Singing was what we last saw ... er, heard Murphy doing. You might remember that she was the throaty, popular penguin Elijah Wood had his beady eyes on in Happy Feet. She also has an album to her name titled Faster Pussycat.
So, there you go. A girl in The Expendables who will give them a beautiful memory to carry into the South American jungle along with all their weapons and muscles.
Fanboy Bites: 'Rocky 7', 'Robocop 3-D' and 'Star Trek'

I heard Wednesday is the new Tuesday ...We never thought it would happen, but Hollywood has finally invented a time machine and is using it to resurrect a number of old franchises. From indieWIRE comes news that MGM's Mary Parent and Harry Sloan are interested in finding out whether audiences want Sly Stallone to return for another Rocky installment. The article adds, "Parent asked for a show of hands from the audience who might be in to that. Though there were a few very enthusiastic responses, many kept quiet." Hmm, maybe they were just pretending not to listen.
During the same MGM panel, Parent mentioned the recently-announced Robocop remake and said it "would be great in 3-D, as would something we're hoping to announce soon." Announce soon? What is it? Could it be Rocky vs Robocop: The Future Ends Here ... in 3-D? Fingers crossed. Here's our earlier story on the Robocop remake, which also includes a remake of Red Dawn. God help us. [via Moviehole]
Finally, on the Star Trek front, a few possible spoilers have leaked out over at TrekMovie.com. I won't go into many details here, though I will say the spoilers have to do with the several different ships featured in the film. Speaking of, what's the official title for this flick? Do we have one yet? Is it just Star Trek? Star Trek XI? How about Star Trek New Beginnings: The Future and the Past Together At Last? On a separate note, MTV spoke with William Shatner who -- wait for it -- is still pretty upset about not being included in the new film. His words (not mine): "I'm solidly behind being disappointed that I'm not in it." Next week Shatner re-phrases things and notes: "I'm not not devastated, though I am positive about being negative."
