Casting Bites: From Hills That Run Red to S. Darko

Here are some horrorific casting bites, courtesy of Variety:

Have you ever adored a man from just one role, even if you haven't/don't see him in much else? That's me and William Sadler, whose name always catapults me back to Friday the 13th, 1995 when Demon Knight opened in theaters, and his Brayker took on Billy Zane's The Collector. Now the actor is teaming up with Sophie Monk for a new slasher movie called The Hills Run Red, which is filming in Bulgaria. The film focuses on a movie fan who is obsessed with finding a full print of a slasher movie, finds himself in the woods where the film was shot, and then realizes that the filming never ended. Dum, dum, dum.

Also, further cast have signed on for the dreaded sequel -- S. Darko. Now, if you pop over to Variety, don't get excited thinking Paige Davis has signed on. While her picture is currently attached to the post (as of 11 AM), it's actually Matt Davis, who played Reese Witherspoon's snooty boyfriend in Legally Blonde, who has signed onto the film with James Lafferty (One Tree Hill). Sorry, Trading Spaces fans. Meanwhile, Briana Evigan defended the film on Friday, but even with her glowing recommendation, I still think this sequel is one of the dumbest movie moves in a while.

Bill Sadler & Sophie Monk Sign Up for 'The Hills Run Red'

Filed under: Horror », Warner Brothers »

Sam Raimi's Ghost House Pictures and Warner Home Video have announced a new project that sounds pretty cool ... if you're a hardcore horror geek, of course. Production is already underway in Romania on The Hills Run Red, which according to The Hollywood Reporter, is about "a film fanatic whose obsession with finding a complete print of an infamous slasher movie leads him and two friends into the backwoods where the film was shot. They realize too late that filming never ended -- and now they must survive a nightmarish onslaught or become part of the movie forever."

OK, so it sounds like a pretty conventional horror plot in some ways, but here's some good news: The flick will star not only character actor extraordinaire Bill Sadler -- but also the mega-mega-sexy Sophie Monk. (Oh, and Tad Hilgenbrink, soon to be seen in The Lost Boys: The Tribe.) The Hills screenplay comes from award-winning genre specialist David J. Schow, which I consider pretty good news, and the multi-hatted Dave Parker will direct. For more on this project, check out the THR article right here -- and Bloody-Disgusting's initial report from last April right here. And to see why I just drooled over Sophie Monk, click right here.

(Thanks to this site for the awesome Bill Sadler pic. Oh, he's the actor who played Death in Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey? "Damn right!")

Sophie Monk Sleeps Around for 'Hardbreakers'

Filed under: Comedy », Independent », Casting », Cinematical Indie »

In the last few years, Sophie Monk has starred in Date Movie (ick), had a part in Click (eh), and then Sex and Death 101 (Waters/Ryder reunion...yay!). She's also finished filming three new films -- Spring Break '83, which has her starring with Jamie Kennedy in a retro high school bullying story that sounds like a Dazed and Confused wannabe, Pearblossom, which has her being a reawakened dead lesbian, and Spring Breakdown, a Rachel Dratch story about thirtysomethings partying with co-eds.

Now, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Monk is also going to get her date on in new writer/director Leah Sturgis' upcoming film. She has signed on to star in Hardbreakers, an indie comedy that focuses on a few "hot single girls" dating in Los Angeles. Her character will be Lindsay Greene, "an outgoing, fun, and crazy 25-year-old who has been with a lot of guys." Uh, okay.

I imagine the thing to note in this flick is that it's called "Hard"breakers, rather than "Heart"breakers. Is it safe to assume that these two young women, one of whom has racked up a lot of practice, have a habit of inducing a certain colored genital condition? And who will be Lindsay's partner in crime? Stay tuned!

'Pearblossom' Cast Falling Into Place

Filed under: Horror », Casting »

I recently alerted you to a little horror film brewing up with the super-scary name, Pearblossom -- a flick about a woman tapped by the creator of the universe to "devour evil, and thereby gain eternal life." Grindhouse babysitter twin Electra Avellan was added to the cast, joining Scout Taylor-Compton (the next Laurie Strode in Rob Zombie's Halloween). Now Dread Central has a handful of other castmates (who have either signed or are in talks) and a bit more about the plot for writer/director Ron Carlson's first horror feature.

As with almost any horror movie, you have to increase the sex appeal with beautiful women. The females in question for Pearblossom, who are totally doomed if Carlson is following convention, are Sophie Monk, who had a role in Click and is July's Stuff cover girl, and Angela Lindvall, the model/actress who played Flicka in Kiss Kiss Bang Bang. To even this estrogen the following guys are also on the list -- Charles Napier, who is usually in the military or man-of-the-law type in a slew of films, Danny Woodburn (Employee of the Month) and Patrick Renna, who was just in the horror-thriller Dark Ride.

So, these actors are all coming together for the devouring evil thing, but Carlson's latest description says nothing about the evil-eating: "The film is about a lesbian couple that departs a New Years Eve party in 1968 and meets the creator of the universe while driving the Pearblossom Hwy. It is there where they are put to rest for 40 years and wake New Years Day, 2009. It is about their first 24 hours of survival as these reborn creatures." I assume that in their reborn state, one of them chomps on the bad guys, and I'd imagine that Taylor-Compton and Avellan will be the lovers. This movie could be quite interesting or a huge mess, but I've got to give Carlson props for an interesting premise.

Popstar Clicks With Sandler

Sophie MonkOnly four months after arriving in Hollywood, Sophie Monk has landed a role opposite Adam Sandler in Click -- proving that at least one person can come off a reality show and not make a fool out of themselves. For those of you not from Australia, let's just say there was a show called Popstars (Making The Band down under) which led to a five-girl band named Bardot that included, well, Sophie Monk. Without detailing her life story, things happened and now she's in Tinseltown filming her first $100 million blockbuster alongside one of America's favorite funnymen.

Click, which also stars Christopher Walken and Kate Beckinsale tells the tale of a "workaholic architect who finds a universal remote that allows him to fast-forward and rewind to different parts of his life." Like me, you're probably wondering whether or not Sandler uses this remote to go back to before he re-made The Longest Yard and decide that, maybe, it would be better to leave well enough alone. Regardless, I bet Ms. Sophie is perfectly happy with where she is right now.
