Anne Hathaway Up for 'Spider-Man 4' Role?

And the list of women who may or may not appear in Spider-Man 4 continues to grow. Now Nikki Finke over at Deadline Hollywood reports through her sources (who, when it comes to Marvel, seem to be pretty reliable) that producers have "approached" Anne Hathaway regarding a starring role in Spider-Man 4. It doesn't say she's been offered the role, or that she's in negotiations to take on the role, only that she's been approached.
Finke also wasn't sure which role it would be, though all signs point to it being that of Black Cat -- who, in the past couple weeks -- has seen everyone from Julia Stiles to Rachel McAdams vying for a piece of that pus ... Spidey pie. Hathaway definitely showed off her acrobatic side in last summer's Get Smart, and certainly has enough of that hottie-yet-down-to-earth sex appeal to draw Mr. Parker into a web of problematic romantic entanglements. Personally, I still like Stiles for the role, but that's me. The studio, however, probably figures they'll get more butts in the seats with Hathaway. So we'll see. Regardless, we're getting close to an official announcement. Who do you want?
Spider-Man 4 hits theaters on May 6, 2011.
Casting Rumors: Julia Stiles in 'Spidey 4', Steve Carell in 'Young@Heart' and More!

A whole bunch of casting rumors have arrived online this week, pushing some, like CHUD's ever-vocal Devin Faraci, to write an editorial-ish piece on why we shouldn't really be paying too much attention to these rumors because, well, they're rumors. And while your parents may have told you that rumors come from a stork who brings them in its mouth and drops them off on your pillow, the reality of the situation is that rumors can start from just about anywhere -- whether it's something overheard by some blabbermouth low-level assistant at an agency or something that's completely fabricated for more internet traffic (I'm looking at you The Sun and The Daily Express!), these days it's really hard to tell. That being said, rumors can be fun because they foster discussion and get those inner studio exec wheels turning in our brains, so here are a few making the rounds right now.
Spider-Man 4
Who: Julia Stiles
Role: Unknown, though with recent information somewhat confirming that Black Cat will be a character, folks are assuming she tried out for that part.
Source: UGO are the ones claiming Stiles met with a casting company in New York City to discuss joining the film in some capacity.
Our Thoughts: Stiles has been in a lot of films throughout her career, though she's dabbled in the big-budgeted before playing Jason Bourne's sidekick in all three Bourne movies. Thus, she definitely brings enough bad-assery to play a Spidey villain, and also enough sincerity to play a Spidey ally. Good choice for Black Cat in my opinion.
Rumor Police: 'Batman 3' News and McAdams Not in 'Spider-Man 4'

Obviously folks can't handle not knowing anything about the next Batman film because once some random person mentions anything having to do with the movie, the entire online blogging world jumps, squirms and runs out the door with a story. The latest, so you're all caught up to date, is that some anonymous source told the Batman on Film fansite that Warner Bros. and Christopher Nolan would be making a decision regarding Nolan's participation in the next film by January. Some claim he's already signed on to direct, but last we heard he wasn't. Regardless, Batman on Film does make a good point in saying that it's probably in Warners best interests to make an announcement prior to Nolan doing press for Inception since he's bound to be inundated with Batman-related questions. Will it by January? Who knows. Either way you're most likely not going to see a new Batman movie in theaters before 2012, so take a chill pill and let's wait this thing out.
In other news, guess who's not going to be playing Black Cat in Spider-Man 4? Yup, Rachel McAdams has officially denied claims that she's up for the role. She told Entertainment Weekly, "That's a total rumor, I have to say. I was hanging out in Toronto the other day and someone came up to me and said, 'I just heard you're doing Spider-Man 4.' And I said, 'Really? No one told me!' It's not true." A rep for Sony Pictures concurs: "It's an Internet rumor, as so many things are these days."
Then again, even if she was circling the part, her lips would be sealed, so are we really any closer to finding out the real truth? Probably not. But at least you're clued in to the latest goings-on.
So Who's The Toddler in 'Spider-Man 4'?
Filed under: Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom »
According to a casting notice leaked by SpoilerTV, producers for Spider-Man 4 are currently searching for a young boy with red hair who they simply call "Toddler Boy". Now, last time we checked "Toddler Boy" wasn't a real superhero and I can't really see any Marvel/Problem Child Franchise cross-overs (though anything is possible), so who is this kid? Here's the official description:Spider-Man 4 - Official Casting Call for Baby Boy with Red Hair
[TODDLER BOY]
2 or 3 year old boy to play 2 year old, Caucasian with RED HAIR, an adorable toddler with an engaging personality, on set experience preferred. IDENTICAL TWINS ONLY
Okay, there are some clues -- note that he needs to be "adorable" and have an "engaging personality", which means no ugly quiet kids. I'm thinking this could really only go a few different ways: either Peter Parker and Mary Jane have had a child since the third installment (or maybe Mary Jane ditched Parker and got knocked up by some other dude), or, as others have suggested, the villain Cletus Kasady (aka Carnage) as a young baby. Then again, who the hell cares about villains when they're babies? If I'm going to root against someone, I don't want to see them as an adorable, engaging toddler first.
Then again, he could be a side character -- a kid who runs around The Daily Bugle causing trouble, or, like, the annoying nephew Mary Jane uses to convince Peter Parker to have a kid. Like I said, could go a number of different ways ... let's just hope Sam Raimi doesn't pull a Superman Returns and give us Spider-Boy by the time the end credits roll.

'Spider-Man 4' Villain Rumor: Rachel McAdams as Black Cat
Filed under: Sony », RumorMonger », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
The Internet loves casting rumors, but the gears of speculation are always at their highest when the topic is a superhero. Or, more accurately, who a superhero is going to be fighting in his/her's next trip to the big screen; and with Spider-Man 4 snowballing into production, the rumors have once again begun swirling around who Spidey is going to be web-punching this time around. First reports that Dylan Baker would finally be transforming into The Lizard seemed to confirm Sam Raimi's return to making a single-villain picture, but now a new name has been tossed into the ring.Mania.com is reporting that their sources have cited Rachel McAdams as in talks with the film's producers to take on the role of Felicia Hardy, also known as Black Cat. If you're unfamiliar with the character, she is a sometimes good, sometimes bad cat burglar who, in addition to being a possible love interest of the web-crawler's, tries to use her less-than-legal prowess to break her father out of jail. It would be an interesting spin to have villainess for part four, but it's unclear at this point as to whether or not the film's Black Cat will ultimately be friend or foe.
A bigger shake-up to the film's line-up could come by way of the second bit of Mania's news, which stakes that the producers are also currently out casting a male villain. Assuming Raimi hasn't already broken with his desire to keep the baddies solo, this would mean that Dr. Curt Connors is not fulfilling his destiny as The Lizard after all, despite Dylan Baker confirming he'd be returning in the role. It's all very fluid and salty at this point, but if Mania's sources are indeed correct, Spider-Man 4 has either multiplied its villains once again or kept The Lizard caged until a later date.
One Villain Only (?) for 'Spider-Man 4' -- Yes, it's The Lizard
Filed under: Action », Sony », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
So here's some "less is more" comic book flick news* that may make you feel a little better about Spider-Man 4: Apparently A) there will be only one villain, which would be great, and B) that villain will (finally!) be Curt Connors aka The Lizard. And here's the best part: We don't have to wait for some gimmicky casting ploy, because the franchise already has the excellent Dylan Baker playing the role! Yes, Peter Parker's one-armed college professor will, after waiting patiently through three villain-packed films, get to shed his humanity and terrorize our favorite web-slinger with cold-blooded reptility. (Reptileness?)Both MarketSaw and Collider have more information, but of course details are very sketchy at this early point. If these early reports are true, I offer a back-pat to Sam Raimi and his writing / producing team for trying to scale the next sequel back a bit, instead of trying to wedge six baddies into the flick just to sell a few extra Happy Meals. It's safe to assume that Mr. Raimi considers Spider-Man 3 the weakest of the series, and if the new goal is to simply deliver an old-school mano e mano face-off between a man-spider and a man-lizard, well I'm just fine with that.
Odds are you'll see more Spider-Man 4 news at this very website as it becomes available.
*MarketSaw.com seems pretty confident that their source is accurate on this information, but of course we should take it all with a grain of salt until we get word from someone on the production team, and on the record.
Casting the Fours: 'Spider-Man 4' and 'Mad Max 4'

There are some big casting rumors circling two big #4 features in the works:
Will Dylan Baker finally have a chance to play the Lizard in Spider-Man 4? Looks that way, as during a Q&A for the new horror flick Trick 'R Treat in New York City the other night, Baker said that he'd just gotten a call regarding Spider-Man 4 and that he's definitely onboard for the fourth installment. Of course, considering the fact that Baker played the unassuming Dr. Curt Connors in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3, there's a chance he'll be playing the same boring, no-nothing role for a third time. But since this will most likely be the last film for Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst -- thereby making it the last film within this particular Spider-Man universe -- then I can't see why they wouldn't finally move forward with Baker as the Lizard.

Sam Raimi Talks 'Spider-Man 4' Villains
Filed under: Action », Sony », RumorMonger », Fandom », Scripts », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
I can't wait for the day when Spider-Man 4 leaves the world of speculation, and moves before the camera. Until that day, we can enjoy plenty of rumors and hints as to who or what Spidey will be battling in #4. Sam Raimi recently gave a few more riddles to the MTV Splash Page, revealing that they still don't have a villain for Spider-Man 4. While Raimi "loves" the story of the Lizard, the Spider-Man team isn't exactly looking to tie up those little mentions of Dr. Curt Connors. Instead, look for a baddie who will toy with Peter's internal and external demons a little bit: "What we're trying to do right now is really understand the journey Peter is going to go on this time and have the villain maybe be a counter to that growth, something that he has to overcome. Or maybe he has to grow in a way to overcome the villain, because there always seem to be stories of coming of age, of a young man growing up and learning things about life, so once we are identifying the exact movement that Peter has to grow to, I think the villain-and we're trying this right now; we're trying to choose a villain based on who would be the proper counter to that growth, so we really have dramatic conflict."
With several drafts and screenwriters behind them, and Spider-Man 4 set to go before cameras in March or April, I'm honestly surprised they still don't have a villain in mind. Naturally, Raimi might be exaggerating and they are working with one (there's a coy "I can't say" at the beginning), but I find its sketchiness a bit troubling. What about you, Cinematical readers and Spidey fans? And does Raimi's latest riddle give you any indication of who the villain might be?
Gary Ross to Write and Direct 'Venom'?
Looks like Columbia Pictures is still interested in moving forward with a Venom spin-off movie, as Variety reports that Gary Ross (Seabiscuit, Pleasantville) is in talks to rewrite and direct the movie. Ross, for those not aware, was the one the studio hired to re-write the latest draft of Spider-Man 4, due to begin production early next year with Sam Raimi, Tobey Maguire and Kristen Dunst all back for another (their last?) go-round. Apparently the studio was so happy with the work Ross did on Spidey that they're now interested in having the guy rewrite and direct Venom, which we assume will follow the trials and tribulations of that black gooey alien entity that, when applied to a human's skin, turns them into either a vicious and violent monster or a fan of all things emo (or both!). The fact that Ross will be working on both Spidey 4 and Venom leads me to believe there might be some cross-over between the two, as that's all the rage right now and studios know how excited fans get when a character shows up in a movie he's not supposed to be in.

'Tron: Legacy' and 'Spider-Man 4' Get IMAX Releases
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Disney », Sony », Distribution », Exhibition », DIY/Filmmaking », Newsstand », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
Now you can mark your calenders, and make a note to pre-buy your IMAX tickets for two of the most highly anticipated geek movies of 2010 and 2011. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Tron: Legacy is getting an IMAX release to coincide with its ordinary theatrical print on December 17, 2010. The film was not actually shot for the IMAX format, but Disney will be digitally remastering the film in order to produce a super-sized version for IMAX theaters. Someone with more technical knowledge will have to tell me if that's a good or bad way to release a film in IMAX, because I'm baffled beyond "Wow, look how big the screen is!" I'm honestly surprised Tron: Legacy wasn't shot with IMAX cameras because if there ever was a film begging to use the technology to the fullest extent, it's this one. Spider-Man 4 also has its IMAX dates booked. It's set to go wide in IMAX and conventional multiplexes on May 6, 2011. This has been standard for Spidey, as all three films have been released onto IMAX screens. The official press release didn't mention whether the fourth will actually be shot using IMAX cameras, but the general belief online is that it won't.
Presumably by 2011, real IMAX screens (as opposed to those faux imitations) will be more readily available so that more moviegoers can benefit from the experience. It would be even better if the price came down a bit. Maybe I'm just a cheapskate (probably) but it's hard to justify an IMAX Experience for every genre movie, and I'm not sure I see that changing for a lot of people by 2011.
