VIDEO: How 'Spider-Man 3' Should've Ended
Filed under: Action », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
It's been awhile since we all got together and complained about Spider-Man 3, and although the topic is a tad old, I came across an animated video today that's worth a watch. It's from the same peeps who put out all those How It Should've Ended videos; I'm not sure if you've watched any of their stuff, but some of it's pretty damn funny. Their latest takes a look at Spider-Man 3, and offers up suggestions on how it should've ended. But it's not just the ending; they actually go through most of the film, in brief snippets, and give their take on how certain scenes would've played better. Keep in mind it's supposed to be comedic in tone -- so when Spidey drops down to find a little kid who's pissed off about all the narration, don't take it seriously. (Although a scene like that in the actual film would've rocked.)
Apart from the Spidey 3 video, they also tackle films like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Superman ("Villain's are stupid"), Lord of the Rings, The Matrix Revolutions, Star Wars Episode IV, The Blair Witch Project (one of the funnier ones) and a fake trailer for Ocean's 40, featuring cartoon images of the 40 actors they'd need for the film. If you're looking to waste some time on Friday afternoon, might I suggest heading over to their YouTube page -- there's plenty of content to check out, and a good majority of it will have you LOL'ing all day long. For those interested, I've included the Spider-Man 3 video up top.
Cinematical Seven: Ways They Could Have Made 'Spider-Man 3' Better

I saw Spider-Man 3 Saturday night. It was a total mess, but the visuals were incredible, the fight scenes were thrilling, and I enjoyed enough of the film to make it worth my time. Still, it occurred to me on the way home that with a few simple changes, the film could have been a superhero classic. And
Before we begin, please know that I'm not a die-hard Spidey fan. The first two Spider-Man films were entertaining enough, but I forgot them immediately afterward. I know when you read that heading you probably thought this article would consist of complaints like "Why didn't they do such-and-such with the character of Venom like they did in Issue #231 of blah-blah-bloo?" But that's not me. This article comes from the point of view of an average guy with no knowledge of comic books who went into Spider-Man 3 with no expectations. Here's what I would have changed to make the movie more entertaining to me. SPOILERS AHEAD!
1) Kill Mary Jane in the opening scene
The Uncle stuff is played out, Peter needs something new to be upset about. And I used to love Kirsten Dunst, but now she "acts" her scenes like she can't wait for someone to yell "Cut!" so she can go and make out with one of The Strokes. Are we really supposed to believe that Peter would choose Dunst's dehydrated, negative, miserable Mary Jane over Bryce Dallas Howard's pants-explodingly hot, upbeat, and cheerful Gwen Stacey? Mary Jane is a terrible girlfriend! She spends the entire film whining about her lackluster singing abilities to a guy who spends his time keeping the city free from evil! She's dull, she's pouty, and she participates in elaborate Chubby Checker-scored cooking/dancing/infidelity montages with James Franco! Dump her!
2) Have your villains get upset before the last twenty minutes roll around
A no-brainer. I can't recall seeing a movie where the villains decided "You know, maybe we should kill the hero" so late in the game. The Sandman appeared to be thinking about what to have for dinner for most of the film. Venom doesn't even enter the picture until the last third. It's screenwriting 101, especially in a movie of this kind. By the end of Act One, you better be damn sure your audience knows who the antagonist is, and what your hero is up against. Nobody seems to have clear motives here. All the characters are confused and conflicted and don't really know who they want to kill and why or if they even want to. That's fine for a Scorsese film, but this is Spider-Man, people!
3) More J.K. Simmons and Bruce Campbell
In the few moments of screen time given to each of these fantastic character actors, they charged the movie with an energy that nearly all of the other actors lacked. As a huge Oz fan, it's always a little jarring to see J.K. Simmons in other roles – I kept expecting him to sexually assault Peter Parker. But once I got past that, the guy was hilarious. And Bruce Campbell's champagne back-and-forth in the restaurant was pure gold. Truth be told, Campbell should have played The Sandman. He certainly would have brought more life to it than Thomas Haden Church -- who must have thought he was playing the Sandman who puts kids to sleep.
Brand New 'Spiderman 3' Trailer Online Now

We've gotten a few teases, but Sony has pretty much kept footage of Venom under wraps. But today us Spider-Man fans get to finally see the villain in action, as a final trailer for Spider-Man 3 has been unveiled courtesy of Comcast. Not only do we get to see shots of Venom, we get a good peek at some scenes, including his origin and a some fight sequences between him and Spidey. I have to honestly admit that it is actually too much footage. I've been dying to see Topher Grace get covered in the gooey black costume for months, but now I feel like I've seen so much that I've lost some of my excitement about seeing the actual movie -- not that the trailer makes the movie look bad; it is just overly satisfying and doesn't leave much in the way of suspense.
The venom footage isn't even half of the excessive spoils of the trailer, either. There are plenty of plot points and visuals that may give too much away with the characters of Mary Jane and Harry/Green Goblin 2. I don't even want to go into these spoilers here, because I'd rather let you decide whether or not to watch the trailer. I'm sure a lot of you can wait two months to see Venom (and the rest.) I sure wish that I had. Right now I feel like I've seen an abridged version of the film from beginning to end. And yet, there is still no clear presentation of Bryce Dallas Howard as Gwen Stacy, which I think is kinda weird. Anyway, you should head over to Comcast's Spidey site regardless of your plans to watch the trailer because there is plenty of other goodies, like videos about the making of the film and about the history of the comic book.
A Sneak Peek at Spider-Man 3!

Cinematical was invited to Sony Pictures on Saturday for a top-secret screening of several scenes from Spider-Man 3. Needless to say, they didn't have to ask me twice. I would have spent several days after I'd gotten the invitation building web-shooters if I needed to. Although Peter now uses organic webbing in the movies, so I'd have to try and genetically splice spider-DNA onto my own, which would have been too time-consuming. Thankfully, they weren't that demanding. OK, before we proceed any further, I should wave the giant spoiler alert flag. If you don't want to know anything about the plot of Spider-Man 3, then you should read no further. You especially don't want to find out from me that Aunt May is actually Galactus. Whoops. Sorry, but you've been warned. Just wait until you see a 300-foot tall May stomping on New York. It's not pretty. Although imagine the size of the cookies she could bake.
Anyhow, onto the screening and into the swanky Cary Grant theater. Sony, if you're not using that theater all the time, mind if we use it for movie watching and playing video games? OK -- here's what happened. Sam Raimi himself (dressed in his ever-present suit) came out and introduced the footage to us and called it a "super ... sneak .... preview ... scenelet." He told us the footage was brand-new, hadn't been seen outside of Sony, had a temporary score, and that some things had been shortened a bit for this preview. He then had to run off to do some audio recording with Stan Lee, who was next door, so we begrudgingly let him go. I mean, no one makes Stan "The Man" Lee wait, even if he does have yet another scene in this Spidey flick.
Venom Toy Gives You a Better Look at the Evil Symbiote

It seems like we're all anticipating Spiderman 3, and the Spidey marketing team is doing a heck of a job to keep our anxiety as high as possible. Bit by agonizing little bit, pieces of the film are shared, which while nice brief spoilers, they are sure to be nothing compared to the big-screen adventure that awaits us. Some of you loyal readers were able to catch a glimpse of Venom when I directed you to a leaked video that was up on YouTube for a few days. If you missed it, it was just a quick glimpse, nothing to really give you a full look. However now, the cat is completely out of the bag.At least, the action figure version is. While I bet that Topher Grace's Venom will probably be a little shinier and maybe a little less buff, the soon-to-be-released Venom toy images are out and give us a detailed look at the spear-fanged outer-space evil symbiote. For all the efforts that Team Spiderman have gone through to keep Venom's visage a secret, Medicom Toy Corporation, responsible for the toy, has taken it upon themselves to end our curiosity. Empire Magazine has pretty detailed images of the action figure, so there's no quick shots or graininess here. While I'm sure this won't hurt the overall affect of the film, I bet there are some Spiderman Powers That Be who are ruing the push for action figures.
Venom is Leaked to the Internet in New Trailer

While I'm not a huge comic book fan, Spider-Man never ceases to make me anxious and excited, even with Dunst's stabs at romance. When our Mark Beall linked the new Spider-Man 3 trailer the other day, I clicked in a hurry, anxious to see how the new cast additions would look. The trailer had all sorts of nail-biting action, great Sandman bits and some Harry Osborn, but while there was lots of Topher, there was no Venom.
However, an un-aired trailer has been leaked on youtube. Some of the CG isn't complete, but it shows some different scenes, and more importantly, it gives us our first look at Venom! He looks a lot more exciting than a whiny guy trying to avenge his father. With this leak, my impatience for the film's release is growing by the millisecond!
Without further ado, click away before the trailer disappears!
The Time has Come for a Little More Than a Teaser of Spiderman 3
Filed under: Action », Sony », RumorMonger », Comic/Superhero/Geek »
The wait for a longer morsel of Spiderman goodness is almost over. SuperheroHype has reported that although the trailer is set to be shown with Casino Royale, which will be released on November 17th, we might not have to wait the desperate thirteen days. It might show up on TV first. ...
Where could Spidey slide in on television? If you're like me, Heroes would come to mind. How better to hit the superhero demographic than releasing the trailer while a bunch of superhero fans are watching? Silly me, that would be too rational. The trailer is rumored to come during The Duel. What's that? The umpteenth Real World/Road Rules Challenge.
This is where the warning bells go off. I can't quite wrap my head around why this would happen. It's not like the Grindhouse trailer popping up during the Scream Awards. Are young people anxious to see angst-filled reality show competitors go head-to-head the Spiderman demographic? While it seemed like a valid question as I typed it, Harry Osborn's face just came to mind.
Maybe the bigger news is the possibility of what will come with the Spiderman 3 trailer. Sony Pictures has brought internet trailer viewing up a notch on the film's website. Forget clicking on your connection speed or trailer size.; the Spidey site offers Quicktime, full-screen and high-def. If you don't patronize Casino Royale, or get yourself a little slice of MTV, there just might be a full-screen explosion coming your way in no time.
Spidey 3 Teaser! In the Flesh!

Remember the other day, when all we had of the Spider-Man 3 teaser was a shot-by-shot text version created by a So, it's your call: If you want to go into a geek coma from the joy of seeing the Spidey 3 teaser AND Superman Returns for the first time together, do not click this link. If you're like me, however, and hate suspense of any kind, click away, and check it out for yourself. (Do it quickly, though, because it seems likely it won't be up for long.)
Edit: Doh! As of 927am EST, it's down. But don't despair: The teaser is allegedly going to be up at Apple this afternoon (supposedly at 230pm EST), so check there for an actual non-cellphone-recorded look.

Spidey goes black in new photo
Filed under: Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
A brand spanking new promotional photo has surfaced for
Spiderman 3 which features Spidey himself hunched over as rain crashes down upon him. However, the interesting
thing about the photo is that he's wearing all black. Not only does the costume foreshadow the dark events about to take
place in the sequel, but it also has a lot to do with one of Spiderman's number one villains...Venom.
While I'm not the biggest Spidey nut in the world, I'm familiar enough to know that the character of Eddie Brock (as played by Topher Grace) fuses with the black outfit to ultimately become Venom. See, this costume is far from skin-tight pants and a mask - it's actually some sort of alien that slowly attempts to become one with whoever wears it. Now, in the comics, there's this whole battle on another planet and Spiderman winds up in black after his traditional red and blue gets destroyed.
Something tells me they will ditch the intergalactic stuff and, somehow, this black costume will be found by Parker on earth. Regardless, this photo has really pumped me up now for the third installment which, in my opinion, will turn out to be the best one so far. What's your take on the black?
Mrs. Sandman will be Felicia Hardy?!
Filed under: Action », Casting », RumorMonger », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
A few days ago, we reported that actress Teresa Russell had been cast in an as-yet-unnamed wife role in Spiderman Three, playing the better half of Flint Marko aka The
Sandman (aka William Baker, for you True Believers). Well, Rich Johnston over at CBR says the character will
indeed have a name...a very high profile name. While Rich doesn't divulge his source(s), he boldly states that the wife
of Flint Marko is none other than Felicia Hardy. That's right, the Black Cat*. One time partner and love interest of
Spider-Man himself, and on the short (but ever growing) list of people who know Spider-Man's true identity.
Okay so let's see...we are bringing Gwen Stacy, MJ, and Felicia Hardy all into the same two-hour movie. Can there possibly be time enough to reasonably give all three of the characters the attention they will deserve? And beyond that...Sandman and the Black Cat? I don't even have a snide comment to make about that one, because frankly, my brain refuses to allow this news to exist.
*Rich notes that maybe the character is the Cat's mother, or something, and just happens to have the same name, as right now the name is the only information he has on the character. This, however, would put too great of an age disparity between Spider-Man and the Cat for it to make much sense, either.
