Star Wars Episode VII: Weird Crazy and Absurd
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom »

To mash up two wildly different movie quotes: I wish I knew how to quit Star Wars, but just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in. This time, it's prompted by a collection posted at online magazine Dark Roasted Blend, which has rounded up a massive amount of links under the all-encompassing theme Star Wars for Your Mind, Heart and Soul.
I knew that SciFi Squad readers had recently voted Star Wars the best sci-fi movie franchise of all time in The Ultimate Sci-Fi Fan Poll, but with all due respect, the true mark of admiration and/or inspiration and/or madness is to spend time and money creating Boba Fett's full-size armor out of LEGO. Or crafting the Millennium Falcon out of a single sheet of paper. Some things are in questionable taste: the charred remains of Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, packaged in plastic as a toy. Then there are the mash ups, like Snow White and the Seven Stormtroopers. Professional creations are not ignored, like original concept art by the great Ralph McQuarrie, which makes The Empire Strikes Back look like an old Republic Western, or a series of recent theme park advertisements featuring our favorite characters dealing with the logistics of modern travel.

As part of our continuing series of weekend posts about people who take fandom just a little too far (in a good way, of course - see the knitted zombies and the hobbit house for stellar examples), I present to you Danny Choo. A Brit living in Japan who recently left a long-term job at amazon.jp, Danny has moved on to bigger and better things - namely roaming the streets of Tokyo in full Stormtrooper body amour. And, happily for those of us far away from Japan, he documents his exploits on video and film.
The best thing about Danny's writeups is that they're written in second person, as if he's giving advice to others who want to follow in his footsteps. For example, "Don't lean to[o] far as your helmet may fall off." I mean, as if there are people all over the world who have Stormtrooper armor sitting around and are just waiting for some direction on how to go about wearing it in public. Even if you're not one of those lucky souls, go check out the site. It's loaded with wonderful pictures and anecdotes - after all, seeing a Stormtrooper riding the subway just never gets old.

How to build a Stormtrooper Costume
Episode III is nearly upon us and you don't have a lightsaber nevermind a stormtrooper outfit, and you call yourself a Star Wars geek? Well, luckily StudioCreations.com has the "How to build a Stormtrooper Costome" guide. Here you will learn how to do everything from making a bodycast of yourself, to sculpting out the parts correctly, to finally pulling vacuumformed plastic for the final pieces. All in all you are looking at anywhere from $645 to $1470 to make your first stormtrooper armor. After that each armor will run you about $250.00 to make. Keep in mind that corners can be cut in order to save money, but you will have to extend your time frame in order to do it for less money. So don't expect to have the costume done for opening night.
