Watch This: Chris Klein in 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li'

Has it really been almost a month since me and maybe three other people paid to see Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li? As I said before, there were two things I took away from that experience: the haunting cadence of Michael Clarke Duncan's laughter, and the Razzie-worthy turn by Chris Klein as swaggering Interpol agent Charlie Nash. I can see the for-your-consideration ads now:"Can only be described as epic in its awfulness" ... "I can't remember the last time I watched an actor fail to walk into a room convincingly" ... "So wooden that he makes Keanu Reeves seem like Don Knotts" ... "This shit is Ricotta, folks."
As several other reviews noted/hoped, his performance is one particularly ripe for a highlight reel on YouTube someday, and sure enough, an impatient individual of like mind cut one together (we put it after the jump). Running eleven minutes, I'm willing to bet it's actually every scene of his in the thing, and by the time he's yelling "NASH OUT!" into the nearest walkie-talkie, you'll be glad someone took the time.

While putting myself through the not good Street Figher: The Legend of Chun-Li, two aspects of the film seemed to merit particular note. The first would be Chris Klein's astoundingly bad faux-macho performance as a swaggering Interpol officer ("Nash out!"); the second would be every other line of Michael Clarke Duncan's dialogue as big, bad Balrog.I bring this up because at any given moment, Duncan's Balrog is given to let loose with a hearty chuckle, and he does this at many given moments, as if director Andrezj Bartkowiak was concerned that he might've been too stoic on all those other days of shooting and just wanted to cover his butt.
I've already elicited some amusingly crude responses from pals, but even if you haven't seen the movie, I would like you guys and girls to complete the following sentence: Every time Michael Clarke Duncan chuckles...
(And "an angel gets its wings" is out of the running from the start. My game, my rules. Feel free to play off of that, though.)

G-Force
Guinea pigs in the employ of the FBI? Well, why the hell not? This is a live action film with digital rodents voiced by Nicolas Cage, Penelope Cruz, Steve Buscemi, and Tracy Morgan. I have to imagine this one got green lit after Alvin and the Chipmunks started pulling in the bucks. The concept has a certain goofy charm, but the trailer has surprisingly few laughs. Judge for yourself on July 24.
Streetfighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
When I hear "Streetfighter" I think more of the Sonny Chiba film The Street Fighter and its sequels, but that's a different franchise entirely. This film is of course based on the long running series of video games (the first of which was released in 1987 as an arcade game) and stars the lovely Kristin Kreuk of Smallville fame. The trailer is a little hard to follow since the narration is in Japanese. What we've got is basically high kicking martial arts action with a sort of comic booky mysticism. Watch for this on February 27.

I've got to admit John Travolta with a shaved head and a bazooka makes for an eye catching image. He's a cop, things blow up. No U.S. release info yet.

Joaquin Phoenix stars as a man torn between the woman his parents have fixed him up with (Vinessa Shaw) and his unpredictable neighbor (Gwyneth Paltrow ) who is dating a married man. Feel the love on February 13.
Crank 2: High Voltage
This adults only trailer is easily the most foul-mouthed trailer I've ever seen and it's also entertaining as hell. Jason Statham is back and this time he's had his heart swapped out for an artificial model that requires periodic jolts of electricity. This one hits on April 17.

New Set Photos From 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li'

You would think that if Legend Films was looking to improve the general opinion of their big-screen reboot of Street Fighter, they would have picked some more exciting photos to tease us with. Legend is now hosting a new gallery of behind-the-scenes photos for the video game flick, and, well, they're a little underwhelming. The shots are mostly comprised of the sets and a few extras, but there are a couple of recognizable faces (including Robin Shou and Kristen Kreuk) in the bunch. However, on the upside, we do get a glimpse of action to tide us over.
'He-Man' Script Gets an A+

Last fall, Cinematical head honcho Erik Davis referred to screenwriter Justin Marks as "the guy they brought in to f*ck up He-Man." At the time, I wholeheartedly agreed with the boss man. But as of today, I'm changing my mind. If the script review over at Latino Review is to be trusted, Marks has done anything but f*ck up the adaptation of our beloved '80s cartoon series/action figure line. El Mayimbe has read the latest draft of Grayskull: Masters of the Universe, and he's graded the text an A+. And if that's not good enough for you, here's a sweet summation: "GRAYSKULL is LORD OF THE RINGS meets THE MATRIX and a little BATMAN BEGINS thrown in for good measure."I don't know about you, but that sounds awesome. It certainly sounds better than both the 1987 He-Man adaptation, Masters of the Universe and the 1982 non-adaptation The Beastmaster, which I always thought of as a pre-He-Man He-Man movie (anyone else ever notice that Beastmaster 2: Through the Portal of Time has the same plot as Masters of the Universe?). Of course, neither of those movies would be hard to beat. Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver could hire a monkey to write a better script.
Unless you're hoping to avoid spoilers, head over to Latino Review to read more praise and plot information for Grayskull (and weep for the omission of Orko). And after getting pumped up about that movie, keep in mind that Marks also wrote or co-wrote the scripts for the upcoming Green Arrow (formerly Supermax: Green Arrow), which IESB.net just reported is looking at a possible summer 2009 release date, Voltron and Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li (for which we shared another Latino Review script review last year).

Hmm. Is the above Smallville's Kristin Kreuk as Chun-Li, or is it just Kristin Kreuk dirty after playing in the dirt? Maybe her wrists still hold some impressive jewelry, but from what that picture shows (courtesy of /film), none of that looks like the Street Fighter character. Sure, wardrobes in these sorts of movies rarely look just like their animated predecessors, but something. Anything? Zack Snyder changed things up for Watchmen, but they still look damned cool and pretty recognizable. If you can't recognize your lead character, what's the point?
Here's hoping there's a costume change coming that we haven't seen yet, or at least some hair buns. This project is, of course, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, not just any Street Fighter movie. Perhaps this is Chun-Li before someone gives her the famous outfit so she can hunt down her mentor's murderers.
First Look at Robin Shou in 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li'

I'll admit that I'm not loving the writing style on the blog for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li . Believe me, it's not easy to wade through all those descriptions of 'sweet footage' and sign-offs like "I'm out like a sonic BOOM" to get to the news (and I'm not the only one who feels this way). But that is why I'm here; I go through it so you don't have to. The site has just posted the first photo of Robin Shou (who despite a long and illustrious film career in Asia is best known here as Liu Kang from Mortal Kombat) as Gen. Shou plays a Kung Fu master who is also the mentor to a scrappy little gal known as Chun-Li (played by Smallville's Kristen Kreuk).Legend will be doing away with the story set up in the 1994 film, and instead, Chun-Li is getting her very own origin story. Early reports had the action revolving around Li out for revenge for the death of her master, and there was also talk that the script would be pitting her against Hong Kong gangsters. But don't worry, Bison and some of his cronies are still getting some screen time.
