Spin-ematical: New on DVD for 6/30

Filed under: Action », Comedy », Documentary », Foreign Language », Gay & Lesbian », Independent », New on DVD », Home Entertainment », Cinematical Indie »

Clockwise from upper left: '12 Rounds,' 'Two Lovers,' 'Street Fighter,' 'Jonas Brothers'

"Slim pickings" is the best way to describe this week's releases. Isn't anyone planning to stay home and watch DVDs?

Two Lovers
Joaquin Phoenix can't decide between Gwyneth Paltrow and Vinessa Shaw. Directed by James Gray, this suffocating drama is dark, thoughtful, and "more true to real human existence than most of the dreck that comes out of Hollywood studios," wrote Kim Voynar. I wasn't quite as impressed by it as she was, but it's still my top pick in a slow week. Also on Blu-ray. Rent it.

12 Rounds
Wrestler John Cena stars in Renny Harlin's latest train wreck (as I described it in my review), a sober drama that resolutely refuses to embrace its loonier plot elements (fire engine smashing through New Orleans, an out-of-control street car). Aidan Gillen (The Wire) provides one of the few pleasures as an exceptionally-nasty master criminal. Also on Blu-ray. The "Extreme Cut" adds less than three minutes of footage. Skip it.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li
I was hoping against hope that this might provide some cheesy fun, but Nick Schager slammed that door shut: "Fighting sequences are dreadfully lethargic ... their choreography is of a dull, unimaginative sort." Not even Kristin Kreuk can save this one. Also on Blu-ray. Skip it.

Also out: Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience.

After the jump: "Indies on DVD" provides several good rental choices, a landmark film by Spike Lee hits Blu-ray, and a long-dismissed effort by director Hal Ashby gets dusted off.

First 'Street Fighter' Trailer Now Online!

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Games and Game Movies », Trailers and Clips »

The first trailer for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is now online, and although it's the Japanese version (which would explain the non-English voiceover), it still looks like a half-decent fighting flick. And, I mean, c'mon -- what else are you looking for out of a film like Street Fighter? Are there lots of badass fights in the streets? According to this trailer, yes. Good. Done. Satisfied.

Based on the popular video game (which you had to have played at some point in your life -- remember the one where you were feverishly tapping buttons, while your friends yelled "Dude, how did you do that roundhouse kick?" -- and you were all like, "I don't know, I'm just hitting the buttons as fast as I can!"), Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li follows, well, the legend of the female warrior Chun Li (Kristin Kreuk) as she sets out on a quest for justice ... or something like that. Look, just bring on the fights -- that's all we want.

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li hits theaters on February 27th. Check out the trailer below, and look for an English-language preview to arrive real soon.

Early Script Review for 'Voltron'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », RumorMonger », Scripts », 20th Century Fox », Comic/Superhero/Geek »

Have you had your fill of giant robots on the big screen yet? Well, Hollywood is banking that you haven't, and while we wait for the next installment of Transformers, it's time to turn our attention to some of the other giant robot flicks heading our way in the not-so-distant future. It's common knowledge that Justin Marks (Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li) is in charge of the big-screen adaptation of Voltron, and today a review of Marks' script has popped up online over at Latino Review -- and, thankfully, it looks like good news for fans of the 80's cartoon. But first off, you should know that the review is pretty descriptive about the plot and 'spoiler alert' doesn't even begin to cover it. If you don't feel like reading the whole thing (and it is pretty long), it can all be boiled down to this: the script rocks.

If you didn't grow up watching 80's cartoons, then Voltron might not inspire much excitement. But, for those of a certain age, Voltron was a religion. The story of Volton centered on a team of five young pilots commanding five robot lions which could be combined to form a giant fighting machine called Voltron. Our heroes are left with the task of protecting their home planet from an evil king and a witch named Hagar. But those were the old days, and according to Latino Review, Marks' script is going to deviate from the original anime origins. For the update, Marks' story centers on the fact that "The Drules have invaded Earth and kicked our ass in the ONE DAY WAR. Humanity has gone underground. New York has been decimated and our story opens on the eve of the fifth anniversary of the Drule invasion."

'Street Fighter' Launches "Uber-Cool" Production Blog

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Movie Marketing », Games and Game Movies »

Surfing around yesterday, I kept seeing the words "New Street Fighter production blog!!" all over the place. So, this morning, I woke up, took a shower, scheduled a dentist appointment and made my way over to this new production blog for Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li. Now this guy Aaron Horwitz is providing the updates, and three sentences into his little b-ball shtick I wanted to slap him upside the head. Why does he have to write as if he's speaking to a group of 12-year-old males with plastic Nunchucks in their hands? Seriously dude. Lay off the cool, MTV-style hip hop flava-talk for a second and tell us about the film.

Anyway, in case you're interested in what this production blog will bring you, I'll let your new pal Aaron tell ya: "Basically, about once a week I'll be flyin' at ya with exclusive scoops, stories, cast & crew interviews, artwork, set photos, and a ton of other Street Fighter kickbacks that you'll find nowhere else on the planet. Maybe even some sweet video footage." Aaron then gives a quick rundown of the "uber-cool" cast, and a mini re-cap of week one before goin' "all American Idol on our asses" and teasing a never-before-announced cast member in the role of GEN. Oh no he didn't! Yes, he did. There's also a little wicked storyboardin' action at the end there. Boo-ya!

Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun Li is due out in 2009.
