Discuss: Your Favorite Super Bowl Movie Promos (?)

You know how all the movie geeks get all giddy and gooey every time the Super Bowl draws near? It's not because those guys like sports, believe me. (Movie nerds are actually SCARED of spectator sports. Yeah, I said it.) The reason is obvious: The Super Bowl always delivers lots of brand-new, mega-pricey, and occasionally effective TV commercials, and movie promos are always part of the mix.

This year, for example, we're all a-geeked about "all-new" films like Transformers 2, Star Trek, G.I. Joe, Land of the Lost, and Wild Hogs 2: Domestic Morons. (Just kidding about that last one. Good title though.) And that got me to thinking about the exceedingly transitional nature of this mini nerd-in. For example ... can anyone recall which Super Bowl movie ads they were pumped for in 2002? 1998? 1983? Lord knows I can't -- and I've been a movie-geek sports nut since, well, about 1983.

But a movie blog would be remiss for letting such a marketing day flit by without a discussion post. And so I ask you this: Do you even remember the Super Bowl movie promos from last year? Or any year? And what if a Super Bowl teaser is really amaaaaazing ... but the movie ends up sucking meatloaf? Do you feel impressed ... or duped? Anyway, please leave your favorites in the comments section, and then feel free to share your thoughts on this topic:

Does being a huge movie fan mean you have to be a huge movie marketing fan? (I say no.) Yes, there are some really awesome trailers sometimes, but overall ... meh.

Check Out Those Superbowl 3D Glasses

Filed under: Animation », Fandom », Exhibition », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing »

I meant to post these early last week, but with the Sundance Film Festival absorbing practically all of my time these past 10 days, I never got around to it. Thus, this could be extremely old news and/or serve as a reminder to pick up your pair of free 3D glasses for the special 3D Monsters vs. Aliens trailer during the Superbowl. I picked these up over at the Albertsons supermarket here in Park City, Utah, and there were stacks of them (with four pairs to a sheet) just sitting in a display case down one of the aisles. One imagines you'll also be able to find these at one of your local supermarkets, so keep an eye out.

Once you've obtained the glasses, though, you'll need to make sure to tune in at the end of the second quarter (ie: right before halftime) in order to watch the 3D commercial. Those who don't have the glasses will also be able to watch the trailer, just without a bunch of Monsters and Aliens running through their living room. We've placed a larger image of these glasses in the gallery below so you know what to look for. We'll be back after the Superbowl to get your thoughts on not only the 3D trailer, but all the new trailers premiering on game day. Monsters vs. Aliens hits theaters on March 27.

3D 'Monsters vs. Aliens' Trailer to Air During Superbowl

Filed under: Animation », Fandom », Exhibition », Newsstand », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing »

During the Chargers vs. Colts playoff game yesterday, NBC was airing commercials advertising a 3D trailer for the movie Monsters vs. Aliens (first of its kind?), which will also coincide with the airing of a full episode of the TV show Chuck in 3D. The trailer will arrive at the end of the 2nd quarter of the Superbowl, and yes -- you'll have to pick up a pair of 3D glasses to watch it. Apparently, these 3D glasses -- which will be just like the ones you wore growing up, with one side red and the other blue, will be available at select Pepsi and Sobe kiosks leading up to the big game. No word on where these special kiosks are located, but I'm sure there will be a formal announcement and/or a website with exact details coming very soon.

Is it a fun gimmick that'll give folks something to look forward to during the Superbowl? Yes, definitely. People like little things like this, especially the ones who have kids and host big game day parties. But does it show the world how far we've come in the advancement of 3D technology? Not really. These will probably be the same glasses I wore to watch 1991's Nightmare on Elm Street 6. Then again, maybe it's about getting people used to the idea of 3D again -- bringing it into their homes, seeing how far they'll go to buy the glasses on their own, etc ... What do you think? Is this something we should be excited about?

Hannibal Rising Commercial, Rejected For Superbowl, Available Online

Filed under: Horror », Thrillers », Celebrities and Controversy », Movie Marketing », Remakes and Sequels »

I guess that since the FCC determined that the sight of Janet Jackson's breast had traumatized families around the world during the Super Bowl, they have been pretty sensitive about the keeping a strict PG-vibe to the proceedings. Although I don't think anyone saw that Prince "shadow malfunction" coming. But in the end, this year's half-time show was relatively controversy free -- instead, there were complaints about the commercials. GLAAD first made a formal complaint about a Snickers commercial and the suicide prevention group, American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, rallied to have a GM commercial removed as well (Both commercials have since provided alternate endings.)

So it makes you wonder what it was about the commercial for Hannibal Rising that caused it to never even get to air. Considering what most people thought of the film (including our own James and Ryan) they probably could have used the hype. But in the age of the internet, nothing stays hidden for long. BDTV is now hosting the rejected commercial for the horror prequel. After watching it, I'm not sure why the commercial was rejected; it could be the "kids in peril" shots, or maybe it's just because it's a pretty lackluster commercial. In the end, it probably won't matter how many high-profile ads they cram the airwaves with when the movie they're promoting probably shouldn't have been made in the first place.
