Movies That Make Me Proud To Be a Girl

Filed under: Fandom », Lists », Trailers and Clips »

In the midst of the Toronto Film Festival this past week, I couldn't help but notice that Whip It! fever was in full swing in my home town. Everywhere I went, I would catch glimpses of young girls in that signature plaid with Whip It! buttons on their bags, or I would see posters for the comedy lining the walls of university notice boards, and I have to tell you, it does my little feminist heart proud. If movies are a big part of your life, then you know how much they can change who you are, and I can't help but notice a lack of truly cool role models for girls. Seriously, there is only so much Megan Fox we can take, and that's why it makes me happy to see girls getting into the image of a young woman defying expectations and trading in her pageant sash for the rough and tumble sisterhood of Roller Derby.

As any movie geek of the female persuasion can tell you, it isn't easy finding films they can relate to that don't reside in the 'rom-com ghetto'. Just because you are a girl doesn't mean that you don't want the same kind of escapism that boys do -- I mean, who doesn't want to save the world? But sometimes I crave a movie that's not straight out of the fan boy factory of hot chicks with guns, but can still make me fly my girl flag high. Because when I watch that kind of movie, it's a rare chance to watch a woman on screen do something other than run from a monster or into the hero's arms. So in honor of us girls, I've put together a list of five flicks that I like to watch when my girl-power reservoirs run a little low.

After the jump; they are women, hear them roar...

Cinematical Seven: Favorite Con Men (and Ladies)

Filed under: Comedy », Drama », Romance », Thrillers », Mystery & Suspense », Steven Spielberg », Cinematical Seven »

There's a caveat or two with which I submit this list of our favorite con artists on film, to correspond with tomorrow's NY/LA bow of The Brothers Bloom (our review from Toronto is here; our interview with director Rian Johnson, there).

One: I have not seen the following -- David Mamet's House of Games, David Mamet's The Spanish Prisoner, and David Mamet's Frank Oz's Dirty Rotten Scoundrels. I know, for shame, boo and hiss and so on and so forth.

Two: I've seen but don't fully recollect either The Grifters or Nine Queens enough to feel comfortable including them as if I had (I also missed the English-language remake of the latter, Criminal, though I've been told that's for the best). If I were a slier man, then maybe I could fittingly deceive the lot of you, but I'm not, so I won't.

While I don't doubt that the characters in those films would be worthy of a slot on our list, there are still at least seven other con (wo)men in the movies worth shining the spotlight on, and I do hope that you do think that may make do when all's said and done.

News Bites: Sam Jackson and Quentin Tarantino are BFF and More!

Filed under: Drama », Casting », Deals », Scripts »

What's missing from Quentin Tarantino's balls-to-the-wall WWII flick Inglourious Basterds (besides accurate spelling)? I'll tell you what -- Samuel L. "Motherf**king Jackson. The Playlist reports that Jackson has joined the cast as a narrator who pops up in only a few spots. Additionally, Maggie Cheung has signed on to play "Madame Mimieux, the French matron of the Cinematheque that takes in the protagonist Shosanna (Melanie Laurent) when she is homeless and being sought by the Nazis."

It looks like Tatum O'Neal is back on track after her drug bust earlier this year, grabbing new work that is matching her with some old and familiar faces. The Hollywood Reporter posts that O'Neal has signed on for a new suspense drama along with Tom Berenger and James Brolin called Last Will. Directed by Brent Huff, the film stars O'Neal as a midwestern woman framed for the murder of her rich husband (Berenger). She's arrested by a detective (Brolin), and sets out to find out who really killed her spouse. It sounds like you're everyday suspence flick, but there's even more faces you might recognize on the roster -- Brigitte Nielsen, Patrick Muldoon, William Shockley, Jeffery Dean, Shawn Huff, and a Zappa of the Moon Unit variety.

Tatum O'Neal Gets Busted for Buying Crack Cocaine

Filed under: Celebrities and Controversy »

There was no Saving Grace for Tatum O'Neal over the weekend. AOL reports that the actress (who won an Oscar many moons ago, at the age of 10, for her supporting role in Paper Moon) was arrested yesterday for buying crack cocaine in the Big Apple. Just four years after the actress wrote a memoir about her struggles to get sober, she was arrested on the Lower East Side after she was seen buying the drugs from a dealer. She is being charged with criminal possession of a controlled substance, which is a misdemeanor. O' Neal apparently claimed she was "doing research" for an upcoming role as a junkie. Um, sure you were.

According to IMDb, she's currently filming a television movie called Fab Five: The Texas Cheerleader Scandal, but she's also wrapped the Connie Stevens-helmed flick, Saving Grace, which I told you about last year. The latter might prove to be eerie in light of the actress' personal struggles. She plays a sister in 1950s Missouri who leaves a local asylum to live with her brother and his wife. The movie should be released some time this year, although no specific date has been released yet.

Stars in Rewind: Cynthia Nixon is a 'Little Darling'

Filed under: Comedy », Trailers and Clips », Stars in Rewind »

With all the news bits about Cynthia Nixon successfully battling cancer a few years ago, and the fact that the movie version of Sex and the City will hit theaters soon, I can't help but think of the actress' first movie role -- playing Sunshine in Little Darlings.

Being a kid of the Poison Ivy camp movie generation, I didn't hear about Little Darlings until about 2001, when an old roommate of mine was shocked at the discovery that I hadn't seen it. In no time, we were slumped in front of the television watching Tatum O'Neal and Kristy McNichol fight to lose their virginity while at camp -- it was slightly more risque than my fave camp movie, which had entrepreneurial campers, color wars, and swimming drama. In Darlings, Nixon played a tow-headed flower child, and the clip above is one of my favorites, where she skillfully stops violence with vitamins.

For an added treat -- doesn't the guy that Kristy McNichol kicks in this clip remind you of McLovin?

Last Rewind Answer: Kristin Bell tried out for the part of Chloe Sullivan on Smallville.

What famous law enforcement role was Cynthia Nixon up for?
