Wear This: Three 'Teen Wolf' Moon T-Shirt

I wouldn't say that we here at Cinematical have a full-blown addiction to clever wearable movie tie-ins, but I would say that we have a totally healthy, totally unrequited infatuation with movie themed t-shirts. And though we may not be pledging our love to Keyboard Cat on a film site (hey, Hollywood, when is the hugable maestro getting his biopic?), we do have a fair admiration for Internet memes as well. And now we finally get to combine the two with the brand new Three Teen Wolf Moon T-Shirt!

Since you are operating some kind of Internet connected device right now in order to read this, then I assume you are already familiar with the Three Wolf Moon T-shirt that became all the craze earlier this year. If you somehow escaped the craze, a quick refresher: it was a cheesy tee sold on Amazon that became absurdly popular because of the awe-inspiring power of its three wolves howling at the moon, as evidenced by user reviews such as this:

"Since owning the Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt, I have successfully solved 7 crimes in my city, including 4 cold case murders. ... I do have one complaint, and that's that I must stay indoors on windy days. Last fall we had a windy day and I received notice that hundreds of women were suddenly pregnant, carrying my offspring, up to 12 miles away. That said, I would whole-heartedly recommend the Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt. You never need to be a lone wolf again!"

And now 80stees.com has taken the next logical step (the first being Three Keyboard Cat Moon) by combining the meme with Teen Wolf. It'll cost you $20, but if simple wolves could bestow the wearer with magical powers, a triplicate of wolf'ed out Michael J. Fox is bound to, at the very least, solve the entire financial crisis, if not prevent 2012 as well.

Now They're Trying to Remake 'Teen Wolf'

'Teen Wolf'Stop me if you've heard this one before: a cheesy but beloved 80s flick may suffer the indignity of a remake. Teen Wolf is under consideration for a new version, according to Moviehole. Before you light your torches and grab your pitchforks, though, be advised that the phrase "currently out to writers" is used, which means there is definitely no guarantee that the project will move forward. You may now breathe a sigh of (temporary) relief.

Michael J. Fox starred in Rod Daniel's 1985 original as an entirely normal high school kid who discovers he's a werewolf. Once he fully embraces his wolf-itude, he becomes a star on the basketball team and gets lucky with his dream girl. Of course, Teen Wolf must learn some lessons along the way. The low-budget movie had the sheer luck to star Fox. When the unproven TV actor broke out that summer in Back to the Future, little Atlantic Releasing Corporation quickly rolled the family-friendly comedy into theaters the following month. Teen Wolf cemented Fox's broad appeal.

Teen Wolf spawned a sequel, Teen Wolf Too (with Jason Bateman as the hairy hero), as well as a cartoon series. Two years ago, rumors of a remake starring Tom Welling (The Fog remake) were floated. Maybe Universal's upcoming The Wolfman is making current rights holders Warner Brothers think about their own potential franchise? I think the original was sweet but thoroughly mediocre, so a remake would be alright with me. But does the possibility of a new Teen Wolf make you howl with outrage?

Cinematical Seven: Monster vs. Alien Super Smackdowns

My imagination was caught by the title of the upcoming movie Monsters vs. Aliens. I've seen a lot of monster movies and films with aliens in them. I wondered how would some of these characters fare in battle against one another. How would the gentle aliens from Galaxy Quest be able to stand up to vampires? Could Superman defeat the monster from The Host? How would Ford Prefect deal with Noah Cross?

So I decided to stage a smackdown event featuring some of the best-known monsters and aliens in film in one-on-one combat. Instead of matching up characters with similar (or notably different) abilities, I paired them up the old-fashioned way: pulling names out of a hat. Two hats -- I filled one with the names of every alien creature I could think of from movies, and another with every conceivable monster. Here are the results. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Pics from 'X-Files' Set

I'll just come right out and say it: I think werewolves are dumb. They could be interesting, and I'm sure they once were, but for me they're typically a let down, whether they be the lame werewolves in Wes Craven's Cursed or the badly generated werewolf transformation in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban or even the blood-splattering werewolves of a well-written horror film like Dog Soldiers. Maybe it's because the first werewolves I was familiar with growing up were Michael Jackson in the "Thriller" video and Michael J. Fox in Teen Wolf, but whatever the reason, the fact remains that I don't think they're scary and I don't think they're cool.

So, you can imagine how disappointed I was to see JoBlo's new spy shots from the set of "X-Files: Done One" (aka X-Files 2), which feature what looks to be a werewolf mask. I guess there's a chance that thing in the photos could simply be a wolf -- not of the 'were' variety -- and that would be OK. But seeing as this is the paranormal world of X-Files, I'm betting on my first thought being correct.

For other fans of the show, these photos are probably pretty exciting. They're certainly a lot more interesting than that first pic we saw last month, and more intriguing than these simple photos and video of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson from FlynetOnline or these more official shots from ComingSoon.net. Also, with all the secrecy surrounding the plot of the sequel, these photos allow us to speculate a great many things while we wait to hear about the actual plot synopsis. Perhaps one of those new cast members, say Xzibit or Billy Connolly or Amanda Peet turns into a werewolf. Wouldn't that be super neat? Yeah, well you already know I think it would be boring, but I'm trying to be excited for the rest of you.

Paramount Tries Again for DTV Sequels

Filed under: Paramount », Universal », Home Entertainment », Remakes and Sequels »

Now that Paramount has hired Louis Feola to head its direct-to-video (DTV) division, the studio is hoping for a lucrative business of cheap sequels. Paramount made a small attempt last year with Save the Last Dance 2, but it wasn't nearly as successful as the small-screen hits that Universal has been dumping out. Feola used to work for Universal Home Entertainment, where he oversaw DTV sequels to American Pie, Darkman and Tremors.

According to Variety, Feola will be mining through Paramount's back catalog, including the films of Paramount Classics, Paramount Vantage, MTV and Nickelodeon, to produce 4-6 sequels, each budgeted at less than $10 million. The first, which has yet to be determined, will be released in late 2008. Variety mentions sequels to Airplane! and The Naked Gun, but the trade is probably just speculating with these titles.

Although I hate the idea of DTV sequels, I have some ideas of Paramount films that could be exploited without upsetting too many fans. The following could be easily and cheaply made and could also provide guilty pleasures to the same kind of people who enjoy the American Pie spinoffs: Teen Wolf, Hiding Out, Summer School and Ladybugs -- of course, each of these would have to be made more R-rated than the originals. Maybe they can even restart the Meatballs franchise?
