Luke Goss to Star in 'Tekken'

Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Games and Game Movies »

The big-screen version of Namco's best-selling game Tekken has been kicked around Hollywood since 1992. At one point Jet Li was even involved. But, after numerous false starts it looks like we are finally going to get an honest-to-goodness movie. Hellboy II villain, Luke Goss, just announced on his MySpace page that he had signed to star as Steve Fox. The character's first appearance was in Tekken 4; Fox was a British boxer who was robbed of his memory and was on a search for answers about his past.

For a lot of fans of Tekken, the sum total of the storyline consisted of listening for "Fight"! and then mashing buttons frenetically for the next 90 seconds. The official story was about a group of fighters in a global competition to the death sponsored by some shadowy corporation. Michael Colleary's script takes a bit of a detour with the story and makes it a shade more sci-fi. This time they are rebels who are out out to overthrow the evil Tekken Corp.

Back in December, Monika gave us a few more details about the film, mainly that it looked like the story was going to be a one man show and focus on only one main character. I'm not sure if Fox will be that guy or if he's just part of a larger cast. Production is set to begin this month in Louisiana, so no matter what you think about video game flicks, I guess it's just about time we all just resign ourselves to the fact that until they run out of titles, just about everyone of them will be headed to a theater near you. Tekken is set for release in 2009.

More Details on the 'Tekken' Pic

I'll never forget the first time I sat down and wrapped my fingers around a Playstation controller. My friend had slid Tekken into the system, and a mere ten minutes later, I had large blisters on my thumbs, but my Anna had wiggled victoriously over every fighter she faced. (A little less, um, butt-grabbing and chest wiggling than more recent incarnations.) So hearing about an adaptation... Well, like anything, it could be good, and it could be very, very bad. In November, Jessica shared the first teaser poster, and news that Dwight Little was directing, from a script by Michael Colleary and Alan B. McElroy. Yes, the same Little who directed Steven Seagal's Marked for Death. Excited yet?

Now Variety has released that same information, but they've also shared some details about the game. Little said: "The film plays out as a science fiction story set in the near future, about a rebel who rises up against the Tekken Corp. to seize freedom for his people. It's a gladiator story, but the videogame has a complicated enough storyline that it provides the template for a martial arts spectacular." I'm not so sure how spectacular it sounds to focus on one heroic dude, especially when there are a bunch of great characters, but we'll have to wait and see. After so many years of mulling over this idea, production will begin in February in Louisiana, just after Tekken 6 hits the streets in January.

The First Teaser Poster for Live-Action 'Tekken'

When I think back on my 'video game memories,' spending countless hours playing Namco's Tekken is at the top of the list. Well, that and Mario Brothers, but I might be dating myself a little there. So imagine my surprise that a live-action film based on the classic fighting game was not only in the works, but that a teaser poster for the flick was already here (courtesy of ComingSoon.net).

Here's a brief synopsis for Tekken, in case you don't remember its awesomeness: "A worldwide martial arts tournament is nearing its final, with a large purse of prize money to the fighter who can defeat Heihachi Mishima in the final round of competition. The contest is sponsored by the giant financial group, the Mishima Zaibatsu. There are eight fighters that remain after winning death matches all over the world. The winner of the tournament will receive The King of the Iron Fist title. Only one will have a chance at defeating Heihachi and taking home the prize money and fame". Dwight H. Little directed the Michael Colleary and Alan B. McElroy script that follows a similar storyline to the original game franchise.

It was five years ago that news of a film first surfaced, but in the barrage of game-based movies in production, I guess it must have gotten lost in the shuffle. Back in 2002, Namco's chairman told IGN that, "Tekken was the perfect game to pursue our dreams together. The game has fun characters and is a wonderful story. Unlike some other games, this has a whole style of its own and is a really fun piece that is very commercial". Well forget 2002; I guess now the right time is 2009, since that is when Tekken is scheduled for release.

Today in bad ideas: a Pac-Man movie

We've reported a couple of times about the upcoming, Jet Li-starring Tekken movie, as well as the Paul W.S. Anderson-helmed Castlevania (neither of which our gamer readers seem very optimistic about). The studio behind both of those films is the small Crystal Sky Pictures, whose jones for video games movies is now officially out of control: not only did they recently buy the rights to Pac Man, but they're actually committed to turning those rights into a "live-action fantasy adventure."

Um, excuse me? Did you say "live-action?" How is this going to work, exactly? Are people going to be dressed up in giant foam costumes? And will they chase dots for two hours? Uh huh. While no director is currently attached to this project, I think we all know the man for whom this project is crying out. Say it with me now, friends: Uwe. Boll.

Tekken's fight to the Big Screen

As we told you yesterday, Screen Gems has announced they will begin filming a $50 million dollar version of the popular fighting video game Tekken this fall. Dimension had originally picked up the rights to Tekken at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival but the film was dropped in the divorce to Disney. Didn't they learn anything from the Street Fighter and Mortal Combat movies? Fighting games don't translate well into a compelling movie plot. The script will be written by Face Off scribes Michael Colleary and Mike Werb, who are capible of turning out a good story. But I still tend to believe you can't make lemonade without the lemons. Mr. 3000/Drumline director Charles Stone III is also attached. At least it's not Paul WS Anderson (not to be confused with Paul Thomas Anderson) or Uwe Boll, who appears to be on a mission to ruin as many video game franchises as he possibly can. Why has nobody picked up the rights to a Zelda film yet?

  • richard-pryor02.jpgMike Epps will play Richard Pryor in a Walter Hill-directed biopic on the comedian's life. "The material is larger than life, and you need someone to fit into it who's not extraordinarily famous or else it would be like Al Jolson playing Malcolm X," said Pryor's wife Jennifer. Now THAT woulda been a show...
  • Casino Royale, the next and 21st James Bond film, will shoot in Prague next summer. Variety claims "the lead is still not cast."
  • Crystal Sky and Screen Gems are partnering to make a feature based on the martial arts video game Tekken, to be directed by "longtime Tekken player Charles Stone."
  • MTV Films is planning to buy a project called Adult World from 23-year-old writer Andrew Cochran, about a Stanford student mitigating a dream deferred.
  • Three Disney films are set to hit Broadway as full-fledged cash-cow musicals in the next two years: The Little Mermaid, Tarzan, and London transplant Mary Poppins.
  • 'Where else can one hear in a single question references to, and a supposed relationship between, the Philadelphia mob and the American Civil War?" Elizabeth Guider attends a Cannes press conference starring Lars Von Trier.
