In less than 24 hours, myself, Scott Weinberg and Elisabeth Rappe will be in San Diego, overdosing on all things geek for the next five days. That's because the 2008 San Diego Comic Con is upon us, and there are literally hundreds of different things to do. We'll be sitting on panels (catch yours truly on the Masters of the Web panel), attending panels, interviewing stars, hanging with Storm Troopers, playing with cool toys, going to screenings (Fanboys, Tropic Thunder, Mutant Chronicles, etc ...) and, well, getting our dance on at some of the coolest parties this side of the galaxy. It's intense. We're excited. And if you're not able to attend, then you best be checking out Cinematical all day long later this week as we'll be shoveling out tons and tons of content.

McG Talks 'Terminator: Salvation' Story and Design

Here's hoping this whole "Christian Bale arrested for assaulting his mother" thing will go away soon (or at least be explained more) because I was getting excited for Terminator: Salvation next summer. And after absolutely adoring The Dark Knight, I really don't want to have to dislike this dude. I'm a big Bale fan, and call me a traditionalist, but I'd like it if my favorite celebs didn't assault their family members. So we'll see ...
But in the meantime, McG is back talking up Terminator: Salvation over on the official production blog. And in all honesty, I'm really starting to come around on this flick. I have faith in McG, I'm loving what we've seen and read so far and I have total confidence in this film kicking lots of ass. That said, McG talked a bit about the way it's all being shot; he says, "We're shooting the film on color stock but are using a method inspired by the Oz process which was developed at Technicolor by Mike Zacharia and Bob Olson. Basically we are adding three times as much silver. It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with the notion of the entire picture - feeling detached from the world we know today."
It all sounds very trippy, and I look forward to the stuff we're shown at Comic Con later this week. Cinematical will be at the panel, and we'll be speaking with McG and his cast ... so stay tuned ....
Who's Replacing Governor Schwarzenegger in 'Terminator Salvation'?
Why, an enormous Austrian bodybuilder. Obviously. Did you have to ask? What's wrong with you?More specifically, it's Roland Kickinger, a really big dude who actually played a young Schwarzenegger in the 2005 TV movie biopic See Arnold Run. He's guest-starred on a slew of sitcoms, and had a part in Lethal Weapon 4. He will also play the Hulk in the anxiously awaited (by which I mean dreaded) parody Disaster Movie this Labor Day.
Kickinger will take over Schwarzenegger's T-800 character, an early model cyborg that was sent back in time in all three Terminator films -- first as the villain and then as a hero after being reprogrammed by the resistance. In the latter two films, he bonded with his human charges and sort of became the heart of the franchise, as well as its comic relief. It was definitely Schwarzenegger's greatest achievement as an actor, such as it was. I doubt they'll be trying to recreate that in Salvation, not least because the characters encounter the robot 20 years before the events of the earlier films. (Damn time travel.)
Some slightly spoilerish quotes from the Clinton News-Record article announcing Kickinger's involvement, after the jump.
EW's Con Preview: 'Terminator', 'Spirit', 'Friday the 13th' and More!

"You're lucky I forgot my water wings biotch!"
In honor of San Diego Comic Con (which starts next week -- OMG!), Entertainment Weekly has thrown together a pretty neat spread on a bunch of the films, TV shows and even comics. Yes, comics. I know, crazy for a comic convention, but what can you do. Although it's not technically part of their Con preview, up above you can see the first image of Jason from the upcoming Friday the 13th remake. The folks behind that flick will host a panel and debut the first trailer at Con.
Below, we've pulled out five of the 26 photos (not including their other First Look photo batch) for you to preview before heading over to EW's site. They also have up a pretty sweet Watchmen piece, which gives another nice look at The Comedian. Featured below: Images from The Spirit, Terminator Salvation, Land of the Lost, Ninja Assassin and Sam Raimi's Drag Me to Hell.
Which film are you most excited about?
Trailer Park: A Thorn, or Claw, In the Side
Filed under: Trailer Trash », Trailers and Clips »

For every hero, heroine, and sidekick, there's a nuisance -- that person who's there to mess things up and foil the plan. This week, we've got a bunch of men who make trouble and quickly become the thorn in someone, or someTHING's side.
Terminator Salvation
As if Christian Bale taking on Batman wasn't enough, now he's taking the shoes once filled by ol' Eddie Furlong and becoming John Connor in Terminator Salvation. That's right -- it's the future and Bale wants to bring those metallic jerks down. It's 2018, and John's understanding of the future has been changed by the appearance of a stranger named Marcus Wright. Connor and Wright head for the heart of Skynet and discover "the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind." Bale's being all breathy, there's lots of flashes and demolition, and Connor gets a bit of a surprise from one Hulk-sized machine. Erik thinks it's the perfect teaser trailer. Me, I'm not sold, but I'm not disappointed yet either.

With about a week and half left before myself, Scott Weinberg and Elisabeth Rappe head out to sunny San Diego for this year's Comic Con, organizers have finally unveiled the full line-up of acitivities .. and there's an insane amount of stuff to see and do. Here are some film-related highlights from Friday, Saturday and Sunday; you can check out the entire sched over on the official Comic Con website (Note: We covered Thursday here, and don't say anything, but I've heard there may be a certain fanboy-ish screening that night as well. Hmmm ...)Friday:

When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed-up -- but no less determined -- masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion-a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers -- Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity...but who watches the Watchmen? Guest appearances TBA. Hall H

It's Official! The 'Watchmen' Trailer Will Play Before 'The Dark Knight'!
Zack Snyder wouldn't confirm it last month when he talked to Collider, but Coming Soon has now scored confirmation about which trailers Warner Brothers Pictures is tacking on to the next Batman installment when it hits next week on July 18. Wonderfully and most importantly, is Watchmen. I can only hope that it shows some action, and a good look at the heroes (including Doc Manhattan), rather than a teaser that lays on more anticipatory torment. The next in the list is, fittingly, Terminator Salvation, which will give us a taste of Bale in the future, before the trailers end and he slips into the batsuit. Finally, there's Ridley Scott's Body of Lies.
Does this affect your moviegoing plans in any way? When I bought my midnight screening tickets for The Dark Knight a week or two ago, my friend and I had a whole discussion about screens -- do we see Batman in IMAX with no Watchmen, or see it on a normal screen and finally delight in the first teaser. We opted to skip the IMAX experience this time, but what about you? Do these trailers change your plans at all? Will you now see the film on a certain screen, or check out the movie earlier to see Snyder's eagerly anticipated trailer?
WB at Comic-Con: 'Watchmen' Plus Robots and Clones and Ninjas (Oh My!)
Filed under: Warner Brothers », Fandom », ComicCon »
Repeat after me, in a drone-like voice if necessary: "I am very happy that my friends, colleagues, and thousands of complete strangers will be attending Comic-Con while I am stuck at home, pining away pitifully on my battered old laptop." Seriously, even though I won't be in attendance, I am eager to read all the cool movie news that should be emanating from San Diego starting on July 23.
Erik has already detailed the events arranged by 20th Century Fox, and now Cinematical has gotten a look at what Warner Brothers has planned -- and it looks pretty good, my friends. Panels have been scheduled for Watchmen, with director Zack Snyder, Terminator Salvation, with the always entertaining McG, and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, with director Dave Filoni, producer Catherine Winder, and, I'll bet, a large army of Storm Troopers trampling the unwary.
Jeremy Piven, Ludacris (AKA Chris Bridges) and Mr. Madonna (AKA Guy Ritchie) will talk RocknRolla, while Rain (AKA Korean sensation Ji Hoon Jung) will excite fangirls -- though I can't guarantee he'll dress the part -- as Ninja Assassin, with director James McTeigue and fellow star Naomie Harris. The new version of Friday the 13th will also be spotlighted, with Jared Padalecki and Derek Meaks ready to talk Crystal Lake and hockey masks.
As always, film talent is tentative, but the Cinematical talent is confirmed and will be on hand to provide great coverage that should make us all wish we were there.
'Wanted' Man Common Talks 'Justice League', 'Terminator 4'. ...
Filed under: Action », Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Casting », Deals », RumorMonger », Fandom », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »
At the recent press day for the new rock-'em, sock-'em action film Wanted, actor and rapper Common met the press; of course, someone asked him about his rumored involvement in the on-again, off-again Justice League movie, where he was rumored to be in contention for the role of Green Lantern, Jon Stewart. His answer was a nicely-tuned mix of diplomatic evasion and general enthusiasm, culminating in a non-statement of Nixonian proportions: "I really don't know what's going on with the Justice League movie; I can say if they do do a Justice League movie, I would love to be a part of it, but I really can't speak on it, because I don't know what's happening with it . ... I like the comic, though."Common also spoke briefly about another high-octane franchise flick he's currently shooting, Terminator: Salvation: "I'm in Terminator 4, and I'm very grateful to be part of that ... I'm playing the role of Barnes, a resistance soldier with John Connor, fighting the machines; I also have a new album coming out in August, Invincible Summer. ..." So, in other words, not exactly a bevy of new information, but, nonetheless, confirmation that a) Justice League is still a no-go and b) Common's on our side in Terminator 4; for more on Wanted, look for our interview with Common tomorrow. ...
Sneak Peek: 2008 San Diego Comic Con!
Filed under: Fandom », ComicCon »
While we're still over a month away from what is perhaps the Super Bowl of geekdom, early info on what to expect from this year's San Diego Comic Con has started to leak out. First off, I've been receiving tons of emails over the past couple days as other websites begin to mention this Masters of the Web panel, which, in case you haven't seen, includes Cinematical. Yes, I'm very happy to announce that yours truly will join the dudes from IESB, JoBlo, Dark Horizons, Ain't It Cool News, CHUD, Latino Review, Movie Web, The Movie Blog and Bloody-Disgusting for an in-depth discussion on how to make your own pizza at home! Not quite, but when you get all these folks in the same room, you'll definitely want to watch what happens next. Wait, there's more! The panel itself will be moderated by directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor (Crank, Pathology), and those in attendance will get to see the first footage from Crank 2 and that Gerard Butler flick, Game. There's also a ridiculous invite-only party being thrown featuring all kinds of celebs, "dancers" and hot internet movie writers, and if you show up to the panel, you'll have a chance to win a ticket to said party as well. Long story short: If you're going to Comic Con, you'll most definitely want to clear your schedule on Thursday, July 24th at 10am for the Masters of the Web panel. Yeah, it's early -- but we're not going to Comic Con to sleep in, we're going to get our geek on. Start early, party late -- that's always our motto.
In addition to the panel, IESB has listed an early and somewhat tentative rundown of what each studio has planned for The Con. I'm seeing names like Watchmen, Terminator: Salvation, The Spirit, Twilight, Underworld 3, Kevin Smith ... and much, much more. God, I feel like I'm seven and going to Disney World. So excited. Stay tuned ...
