Discuss: 'The Dark Knight' Snubs and Gets Snubbed

This morning we learned that the Hollywood Foreign Press doesn't like The Batman very much, as they only awarded the film one gimme nod to Heath Ledger in the Best Supporting Actor category -- this despite the fact that the film has broken records at the box office and is about to smash some more on DVD. According to reports, The Dark Knight has sold 600,000 Blu-ray copies on its first day on the market, destroying the previous record held by Iron Man (260,000 Blu-ray discs). Additionally, the Bat-tastic flick sold three million DVDs on Tuesday, and will most likely catch up to Iron Man's one-week total of 7.2 million sold.

Okay, so obviously people are falling over one another to have at this piece of badass -- but when it's all said and done, what did you think of the disc(s). As previously mentioned in our review of the Blu-ray disc, I felt the special features were seriously lacking -- not only in the commentary department, but also in the character department. Personally, I wanted to see a special feature on Ledger's Joker, as well as Eckhart's Two Face. I wanted to hear more from the cast, I wanted them to extend their ridiculous viral marketing campaign to the DVD and send us on a wild goose chase. I felt like this was a blatant set up for a double dip, with Warners most likely releasing an Ultimate Deluxe Edition during the next holiday season, and that kinda frustrates me.

So, did The Dark Knight deserve more nominations? What did you think of the Blu-ray disc or DVD? And were you satisfied with the special features, or did this year's biggest home video release let you down?

'Dark Knight' Not Getting an IMAX Re-Release??

Filed under: Action », Fandom », Exhibition », Home Entertainment », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

A couple of months ago -- and after watching the film spit out monster box office totals -- there was word Warner Bros. would throw The Dark Knight back onto IMAX screens (and possibly conventional theaters) for one last run. With the flick currently lingering around the $996 million mark, a re-release would all but guarantee it the much sought-after $1 billion. However, according to Superhero Hype, it's not gonna happen. They don't give much of a reason or a statement, just that plans to re-release on IMAX screens have apparently been scrapped.

It's unfortunate, too, because the DVD (which we'll review tomorrow) includes a few great behind-the-scenes features on the film's IMAX sequences. And, as someone who did not have a chance to catch the flick on IMAX screens, I was kinda looking forward to taking in a screening this January during the re-release after watching how they went about shooting it. Considering Christopher Nolan and his crew made history by becoming the first major feature film to shoot partly using IMAX cameras, you'd think folks might want to stage an encore engagement. Oh well.

Also of note: Variety reports that The Dark Knight will arrive via video-on-demand in South Korea two weeks before the DVD hits shelves, making it the first Hollywood blockbuster release to go VOD before DVD.

Were you looking forward to watching The Dark Knight again on IMAX screens?

UPDATE: BoF reports (via a Warner Bros. source) that this is not true, and that the film will indeed be released on IMAX screens in January. Superhero Hype has removed the original story from their website. We'll let you know when something a little more official hits, but it looks good for fans ...

Fan Made: The Dark Knight Hearts Darth Vader

Filed under: Fandom », Images »

Since this is a time for giving thanks and being with the ones you love, we thought it might be fun to show you this fan made poster of Batman holding hands with Darth Vader as the two stare out at the city lights below. Of course Batman would never hold hands with the likes of Vader ... in public ... but you never know what goes on behind closed doors. Here are two men who wear black costumes and have a hard time opening up to others. Maybe they would find comfort in one another, during times of silence, when the big, bold, bright city awaits their next move. Everybody needs a hug, right?

All kidding aside, this does remind me to remind you to tune in to Cinematical early next week as we'll have a very cool sneak peek at The Dark Knight on DVD and Blu-ray (in stores December 9). Check out a larger version of the image above by clicking below.

(P.S. So did Batman really die today in comic form, or what?)

'The Dark Knight' DVD and More 'Batman 3' Rumors

Filed under: Action », Warner Brothers », Fandom », Newsstand », Home Entertainment », Movie Marketing », Comic/Superhero/Geek », Remakes and Sequels »

When The Dark Knight hits DVD on December 9th, it will cause hysteria not seen since ... well, it hit theaters on July 18th. Part of it will be due to those devoted fans who were buying tickets on eBay, but also be due to it receiving one heck of a release. DVD Active gives us a few details on the DVD, and you can scope out some photos of this year's hottest stocking stuffer below.

First comes the standard 1-disc edition, for those buyers who just don't care about flashy extras or DVD art. There will be no bonus features on the one-disc, so buy carefully. True fans will be opting for the 2-disc set, which includes these delightful extras:
  • Gotham Uncovered documentary
  • Featurettes (Batman Tech: The Incredible Gadgets and Tools, Batman Unmasked: The Psychology of The Dark Knight)
  • 6 episodes of Gotham Cable's Premier News Program
  • Galleries (The Joker Cards, Concept Art, Poster Art, Production Stills)
  • Trailers and TV spots
And if that wasn't enough, the 2-disc DVD art will feature alternate art under its cardboard sleeve -- it seems the Joker savaged each and every one of them with markers and crayons (see gallery below).

There's also a third edition the really hardcore among you will be standing in line for, and that's the limited edition pictured above. It doesn't come with additional features, but is secured in a steel DVD case and accompanied by a replica Batpod. As it's not actually big enough to ride or pivot on walls, it's useless to me. But it's ideal for those of you with lots of desk space!

In related news: The brand new edition of Production Weekly lists Batman 3 as going into pre-production this February, with Christopher Nolan directing. PW is a pretty reliable trade source, though it's odd to see news like that hit there before arriving in, say, Variety. As always, more info when it develops ...

'Iron Man' Gets a DVD Release Date

The first giganto film of the summer has been given a DVD release date, according to Video Business, and if all goes accordingly it looks like you'll be able to enjoy Iron Man in the comforts of your own living room (legally) on September 30. There's no word on special features yet, however Amazon now allows you to pre-order three different versions, including your standard single-disc ($34.99), a two-disc special edition ($39.99) and a Blu-ray Special Collector's Edition ($39.99). (Note: Those are the list prices and each DVD is cheaper through Amazon.) The article also says to expect Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to hit DVD in October with Kung Fu Panda in November. One imagines (and hopes) Hancock, WALL-E and The Dark Knight will all hit DVD by Christmas as well.

But back to that Iron Man DVD. Those of you attending San Diego Comic Con might want to listen up because Marvel will be hyping up the DVD at their Comic-Con booth by passing out a flash drive containing a sneak peek at the Iron Man DVD. Of course, should we get our hands on one, you'll be the first to know what's on it.

So, who's buying this DVD?

Update: Thanks to Cinematical reader Jeffrey for pointing us toward a look at the limited edition Crystal Skull packaging for the Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull DVD over at Amazon. Check it out below ...
