Fun Out of the Sun: A Look at the 2009 Florida Film Festival

The 18th annual Florida Film Festival ended a week ago last night, and do you want to know why our coverage of the fest is going up just now? Because I'm selfish and wanted to catch up with as many of the forty or so features as possible, even after the awards had been announced and everyone had gone home (for the record, I managed to miss each and every winning film -- Prince of Broadway, The Garden, Prodigal Sons, Neil Young: Don't Be Denied, and the exceedingly popular Poundcake -- and am kicking myself still).
However, between the appearances by Ken Russell, Glenn Close, and Jon Voight (oh, my!), I did manage to catch my fair share of world, regional, and local premieres at this celebration of Original Cinema, and you can see what we saw after the jump.
Casting Bites: Williamson, Dunn, McCord & Sandvig

Check out this collection of old and new faces, courtesy of Variety:- He became super famous, or at least, super recognizable after jutting out his lower lip and playing Bubba in Forrest Gump. Now Mykelti Williamson is doomed to some terrible death -- or at least, he's doomed to be surrounded by it. He's picked up a role in the next accident fest -- Final Destination 4. Unfortunately, there's no word on who he'll play -- whether he'll have a bit part, or figure prominently. Either way, you'll get to see him in 3D! In the meantime, you can catch him in Vice, a new drama starring Michael Madsen and Daryl Hannah.
- Then we've got Saturday Night Live alum Nora Dunn. Recently, she's been hanging out on the Pineapple Express, but now she's also getting spiritual -- or at least, into the spiritual business. Dunn has signed on to play a literary agent in the upcoming Jeff Daniels film The Dream of the Romans, which I told you about the other day. Daniels stars as a reclusive writer of spiritual books who gets hounded for advice by a few eager fans.
- Finally, there's more talent signing on to the Patrick Swayze comedy Fired Up, which focuses on two guys who sign up for cheerleader's camp to pick up girls -- AnnaLynne McCord (Nip/Tuck) and Jake Sandvig (Sky High). There is no word on McCord's character (although I bet it would be safe to assume that she'll be a cheerleader), while Sandvig will play some dude named Downey. A-W-E-S-O-M-E. (I really hope this is good, for Swayze's sake.)
'Roman'tic Comedy to Shoot in Philly

Sometimes when I see a bit of casting news, I imagine a film not with the cast of actors, but with their previous roles. So, imagine what kind of ensemble can be put together with the upcoming romcom The Dream of the Romans. Variety reports that Jeff Daniels, Lauren Graham, Lou Taylor Pucci, Olivia Thirlby, and Kat Dennings have signed on for roles in the film, which will be the feature debut of writer/director John Hindman.Romans stars Daniels as some sort of Rhonda Byrne -- a reclusive author who penned a book that "redefined spirituality for a generation." Unfortunately, his writing interferes with his desire to be left alone as many of his fans hunt him down, convinced that "he has all the answers." Two of them are Graham, who plays a struggling single mum, and Pucci, who plays a guy straight out of rehab. This is a romantic comedy, so most likely Ms. Gilmore will get to fall for Mr. Berkman. Or, maybe the backbone-lacking jerk from Chumscrubber will get some romance with Juno's friend or the 40-year-old virgin's stepdaughter.
iDeal's (the film's financer) Jana Edelbaum says: "This is a sparking piece of writing with vivid, wonderful characters." At the very least, it looks like a fresh jump into romcom territory, rather than the usual retread. The project just kicked off production in Philly.
