Russell Brand is Back for the MTV Video Awards
Filed under: Comedy », Celebrities and Controversy »
The last time that MTV let Russell Brand near a microphone, things got a little ugly between the British comedian and teen fans of Jordan Sparks and The Jonas Brothers. But I guess all is forgiven, because MTV has announced that Brand will be back hosting the 2009 MTV Video Awards. During last year's telecast Brand cracked wise about The Jonas Brothers' display of Purity Rings and caused a bit of ruckus over his comments. But, if you are wondering if we are going to see a more 'traditional' Brand on this year's telecast, I wouldn't worry, Brand told MTV, "This year will be a controversy-free festival of love and discrete orgasms". I guess even when he's trying to play nice, the man is strange with a capital 'S', and I can only assume that MTV is praying that Brand's unpredictability when it comes to speaking his mind will add up to some big ratings for the show.
Considering that just a little over a year ago, most of us had never heard of the strangely funny comedian, you have to admire his ability to get his name out there. Since his breakthrough role in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Brand has been piling on the projects. including remakes of Arthur and Drop Dead Fred. First up will be his reprisal of the great Aldous Snow in the Sarah Marshall follow-up, Get Him to The Greek, which will hit theaters in spring 2010, but an MTV gig will get him just that little extra bit of publicity.
After the jump; Brand's take on last years VMAs...
'Coraline' Returns to 3D Screens This Friday

In a move that comes as little surprise to anyone who saw the opening weekend grosses for You Guys Are No Hannah Montana: The 3D Concert Experience, it appears that most 3D-equipped screens will be bringing back the critically acclaimed and fairly successful Coraline as a proper theatrical experience starting this Friday. (Make that one less excuse for the animation-savvy likes of Mr. Weinberg. Guy lurves the stuff.)According to Box Office Mojo, seventy percent of Coraline's $17 million opening weekend was from 3D venues, and the film managed to gross nearly $54 million as a whole before the Jonas Brothers landed three weeks later. However, their $12.5 million opening weekend (compared to Miley Cyrus' twice-as-high opening on half as many screens) and subsequent 77% drop in attendance last weekend suggests that the remaining fortnight before Monsters vs. Aliens lands would be best suited to a film that might still draw a crowd, one of a significantly broader demographic appeal.
Okay, so all numbers aside, families who haven't seen it yet should find it considerably more inventive than the likes of Race to Witch Mountain (though I still wouldn't take the youngest tykes), and anyone else interested now has a chance to catch it proper before it's replaced by another 3D offering that I can only presently assure you will be equally worth your while and dollar.
The Jonas Brothers May Ask You to Move Down So They Can Sit Together

We just got a press release saying that the Jonas Brothers are teaming up with Marquis Jet to cross the country and pop up in random cities over this weekend to celebrate the release of their 3D concert film. We really interpret this press release to say that ticket pre-sales aren't as gonzo as those for Ms. Miley Montana were this time last year, and here's a gimmick that'll make sure the kids turn up just in case the Brothers decide to.Just imagine, though: Kevin, Joe and Nick show up at your theater. They sit right behind you, kicking your chair and asking each other how awesome they were at this part and that part. They couldn't text behind you and spill popcorn on your lap at just any old concert now, could they?
The 3D experience will kick Coraline off of those digitally-dedicated screens this Friday (so hurry up already if you haven't gone!), and the IMAX experience in particular will only last for a week after that before getting booted in favor of a movie that only two of the three brothers are actually old enough to see...
Poll: Should The Academy Choose a Serious Oscar Host?
Filed under: Awards », Fandom », Home Entertainment », Oscar Watch »
Each year the ratings for the Academy Awards seem to drop, and each year more and more people seem to blame the host for his (or her) inability to keep the world glued to their screens for three-plus hours. Sure, it takes a whole lot of everything to satisfy those tuning in to Hollywood's biggest night, but perhaps with the recession and economic problems, folks aren't itching to watch pretty millionaires congratulate one another with smiles, hugs and gold statues. Or we can just blame Jon Stewart for f**king it all up. Either way, the Academy might be looking to switch things up this year by bringing on a host who isn't a stand-up comedian or a TV personality. According to Deadline Hollywood, they've chosen someone "way outside the box" to host this year's ceremony, and there won't be "the traditional segment of joke-telling near the start of the broadcast." DH says, however, that this person "is in the movie biz," and an announcement could come as soon as early next week. While some would prefer to see them lose the funny guy (or girl), I kinda liked it when they'd open up the show with some laughter or a musical number or, ya know, something light and entertaining ... since that's what these people do for a living -- they entertain. And if the Academy chooses some bore to walk out on stage and open up the show with a monologue about how "important" and "meaningful" movies are, I'll be switching channels in no time. Or, they could announce the new host as being The Jonas Brothers ... and then, well, we're all screwed.
But what do you think -- who would you prefer: a funnier, song-and-dance host or a more serious one?
UPDATE: Apparently, according to Deadline Hollywood, Hugh Jackman is the "way outside the box" name the Academy wants to nominate as host for the Oscars. He sure does look good, and claw good, but will he host good?
UPDATE 2: USA Today now confirms that Jackman will indeed host the Oscars.
Disney Movies Streaming Free Online
Filed under: Animation », Disney », Family Films », Home Entertainment »
It seems most TV series can be watched online for free now, so why not also stream episodes of a program like ABC's Wonderful World of Disney? Sure each episode is actually a feature-length Disney-made film, but a TV show is a TV show. Fortunately, Disney seems to agree, as they're putting this summer's crop of WWoD films online for free. Typical of Disney, though, and unlike ABC.com's library of episodes, each film will only be available for a limited time. Basically, each title will screen on ABC on Saturday night, then it will be up on Disney.com (specifically the WWoD page) the following week, from Monday through Friday only. Currently, Finding Nemo, which appeared on WWoD June 7, is being offered. Other movies on the schedule this summer include Monsters Inc., Freaky Friday, The Haunted Mansion, Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen and The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement. Peter Pan will be the last to air and then stream, during the first week of August. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the one movie making its world premiere on the program, Camp Rock, will also (or is it only?) stream for 24 hours on June 23, on a separate page, after airing a few times on ABC and ABC Family the weekend prior.
The Jonas Brothers Head to 'Camp Rock'

I really don't get the appeal of being, or wanting your kids to be, a big star and celebrity -- well, besides the greed. Essentially, these kids give up most of their childhood, start working at a very young age, lose most of the benefits of a private life out of the spotlight, and have to try and figure out who they are while continually getting buzzed up and knocked down. They usually head from great young careers into varying degrees of adult turmoil and image-shedding. Nevertheless, there's always the new, fresh young things. This time around, it's the Jonas Brothers, Kevin, Joe, and Nick, who are already doing better than their predecessors, those awkward Hansons.First, there is their music, a concert special next month, and an upcoming spy comedy TV show for Disney, called J.O.N.A.S. (Junior Operatives Networking as Spies) -- which could very well become a feature if it's popular. Topping that off, The Hollywood Reporter has posted that they're also working on a music movie called Camp Rock. The flick is currently filming in Toronto, and could very well be the next High School Musical. It stars the brothers as members of a group called Connect 3, and they're "celebrity guest counselors at a prestigious summer camp for aspiring musicians." It's also kind of like the musical Cinderella -- this young girl wants to spend her time at the camp, but can only be there if she works the kitchen. One of the pop stars hears her voice, and he sets out on a mission to figure out who she is.
Helmed by Matthew Diamond, the music feature will air on the Disney Channel next summer. President of entertainment at the channel, Gary Marsh says: "This is an extraordinary opportunity for us to... launch them into the stratosphere..." Let's hope they know how to survive in the next layer of the Earth's atmosphere.
