Joss Whedon's 'Cabin' Delayed a Year to Go 3-D
Filed under: Horror », Fandom », Newsstand »
Not much is known about Joss Whedon and Drew Goddard's pet horror project, The Cabin in the Woods, beyond a few snarky posters released at last summer's Comic-Con and a Feburary 5th, 2010 release date. Now, MGM is apparently so pleased with whatever the two are cooking up that they want to convert the already shot film to 3-D -- a process that has the release tentatively rescheduled for January 14th, 2011.That's right, a full year's delay. Not the best of omens for any film. However, in the name of all that is silver lining, we turn to our trusted colleagues over at CHUD and Hitfix for their thoughts. Devin was impressed by the footage he saw in a recent visit to the editing bay, while Drew claims that the script had potential to break out in however many dimensions. Neither has seen the finished film, of course, and both admit as much, but whatever they've seen or read has given them cause to think this is a wise move on the studio's part.

Why Go to the 'Dollhouse' When You Have a 'Cabin in the Woods'?
Filed under: Horror », Casting »
Joss Whedon is basically a God amongst geeks, and a breath of fresh air to female-centric media. But this whole Dollhouse thing has got us in limbo, as much as it hurts my fangirl heart to say. Can it find the magic of Buffy? Can Eliza hold her own as a woman of many faces? When will we see more Acker? I know I'm not alone in my trepidation over the new show, but now I'm wondering if all the magic is just being funneled into The Cabin in the Woods. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Cabin, which is now shooting, has its horror playmates: Kristen Connolly, Chris Hemsworth, Anna Hutchinson, Fran Kranz, and Jesse Williams. These guys might come from gigs like Star Trek and Revolutionary Road, but they're relative newcomers to the scene. (Although Kranz is already part of the Whedonverse -- he plays Topher on Dollhouse.) Joss says: "Each of the 'kids' is unique, fascinating and talented, and like true friends, the group is more than the sum of its parts. These are people you care about, able to go toe to toe with the amazing actors we've corralled thus far, and not unpretty in the bargain. I can't wait to harm them."
I'm getting a Buffy feeling about all of this. It could be just desperate hope, but Whedon has proved to have an eye for new talent, whether it be on the vampire or cowboy space stage. And with Drew, it's like the magic of Sunnydale all over again -- the man with the vision teamed with the man who brought us "Conversations with Dead People."
It just sucks that we can't get scared this Halloween -- Cabin has been bumped to a romantic, February 5, 2010 horror date.

Two More Head for Joss Whedon's 'Cabin in the Woods'
Filed under: Horror », Casting », Mystery & Suspense », MGM », United Artists »
I have to admit, I'm a geek for all things Joss Whedon, so you can pretty much guarantee my interest in anything -- even if it is a tired horror cliché. Case in point: Whedon and Drew Goddard's (Cloverfield) horror-suspense, The Cabin in the Woods. The 'mystery-shrouded' project with MGM and UA has finally made their first honest to goodness casting announcement, but it is not who you might expect. The Hollywood Reporter has now confirmed that Richard Jenkins (Burn After Reading) is currently in talks to star alongside Bradley Whitford (star of the beloved political drama, The West Wing) in the suspense-horror. Considering that the film is being made by the man responsible for Cloverfield, it shouldn't come as a surprise that most of the details about the story have been kept under wraps. What we do know about the flick, is that it will be a twist on the classic horror tale of 'sexy teens' stranded out in the woods -- and as someone who has been a long-time fan of Whedon, I know better than anybody that the guy knows how to do a 'variation on a theme'. Whedon wrote the script with Goddard (who will also direct), and Whedon will act as one of the producers for the film. In previous encounters with the press, Goddard said Cabin has, "...a harder and darker edge, but it's also got classic Whedon qualities. It'll rip your heart out and be heartfelt at the same time." -- Which will probably mark one of the few times in horror that we might actually give a damn about the folks being slaughtered before our eyes.
The Cabin in the Woods is scheduled for release on Feb. 5, 2010. Which is a far cry from an earlier promise of an October release, but when you are dealing with anything 'Whedonesque', a little patience doesn't just help; it's pretty much a requirement.
