Frank Miller Fancies Stallone as Broken Down Batman

Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns is one of those fantasy movie concepts that never goes away. Everyone wants to see it, everyone wants to direct it, everyone wants to be in it, and yet it never actually gets made. I'm not sure exactly -- I don't think it's unfilmable, but it's kind of nightmarish. I don't know why, but I always want to scrub my brain after I read it. (When someone invents a method for doing just that, please let me know.)

Anyway, Geoff Boucher, who has the most enjoyable sit-down chats with geek gods, mentions that the last time he spoke to Miller, the writer/director/man about town said that he envisions Sylvester Stallone in the role. "Just that mouth of his, the scowl and the way it would look in a mask. I loved Rocky Balboa. This wounded warrior, that's what Batman is in Dark Knight Returns. "

You can't blame Miller for thinking so visually; he is a comic book man, after all. But Miller's retired Batman has a real elegance about him as he drinks hard liquor with Commissioner Gordon, and thinks about the good old days. He's like Gregory Peck, if Peck had ever been an ass-kicker of Arkham escapees. That's not Stallone -- who does battered, bruised, and pissed off very well, but could never be Bruce Wayne. But if they ever do Returns, they really do have to cast one of our former 80's heroes for added poignancy -- I'm just not sure who. Bruce Willis? Kurt Russell?

Fan Made: 'Dark Knight' Sequel Poster

Here's a piece of coolness that's been making its way around the internets today. From our friends at First Showing (via Superhero Hype) comes what appears to be a fan made poster for The Dark Knight Returns (click to enlarge), a sequel to this summer's The Dark Knight. No, a third Batman film has not been announced yet, so don't go gettin' your knickers in a twist thinking they've already started promoting the next film. (God, please don't tell me they've already started promoting it -- I think I speak for all us online movie dudes when I say we need a few months off to recover from this puppy.)

That said, can you spot the two new characters this poster introduces? Yes, one of them is Riddler, but the other is a bit harder to locate. (Hint: Look at the newspaper articles.) No one knows exactly what direction the next Batman movie will head in, except for the Nolan boys should they decide to pen the script. Riddler is a cool character, but is he too close to Joker? Should they take a chance on Catwoman? Should they dip into a lesser known villain, or create a brand new one? One thing's for sure: You folks will not get tired of this debate anytime soon ...

Cinematical Seven: A 'Dark Knight' Companion

Filed under: New Releases », Cinematical Seven »

There are many ways to anticipate The Dark Knight. You can assemble a fake plot out of the numerous clips circulating the web, you can stitch together adorable bat-toys, or just rewatch Christopher Nolan's first entry in the Batman franchise. However, there's a lot more to this sprawling, nearly three hour rush of furious confrontations and haunting corruption. The greatest Batman stories emphasize the character's shadowy nature, and Nolan pulls from many of them to create the intensely moody aura of the latest film. You don't need to know anything about the character to enjoy the movie, but it certainly expands the experience to do some research -- and allows for a greater appreciation of the filmmaker's efforts to honor the nature of the character.

Here's a look at some antecedents to the current interpretation from the last two decades.
