The Mother of All SciFi Movies: TerminEmpireTrekAliensFormers
Filed under: Sci-Fi & Fantasy », Fandom », DIY/Filmmaking »

Imagine if The Empire Strikes Back, Aliens, Terminator 2, Star Trek, Terminator Salvation, and Transformers 2 were all mashed up into one ginormous science fiction blowout extravaganza. It would be a huge trainwreck full of twisted metal, explosions, and a storyline that would make even Thomas Pynchon's head explode. There would be nothing left, and humanity would be doomed.
However, the trailer for said film might be digestible. YouTuber user FYWBreborn has concocted a mashup of these films into something resembling Michael Bay's wet dream, and here it is for the masses to see. Take a look after the jump as he melds scene after scene together in what would be the most expensive film ever seen, and listen to the faint sounds of a million faboys crying out in terror and suddenly being silenced.
And when you're done with that, check out his Pineapple of Solace mashup trailer, which ain't bad either.
Scenes We Love: The Empire Strikes Back

In all seriousness, I don't think I'm alone on that -- how many of us young film fans were first introduced to romance (and sexual tension, though we didn't know what sex was) thanks to The Empire Strikes Back? Somehow, I think a lot of first kisses took place to clumsy re-enactments of this scene -- and probably a few first slaps too, come to think of it. I can think of no better scene to kick off Valentine's Day weekend with.*
And for some Han and Leia related trivia from IMDB:
- When Lando is about to lead Han, Leia, and Chewie into the trap set by Darth Vader, Lando offers his arm to Leia, as a gesture to lead her down the hallway and she accepts it. Harrison Ford ad-libbed Han coming up behind Leia and offering his arm to her at the exact same moment to imply that Han was jealous.
- Carrie Fisher stood on a box for many of her scenes with Harrison Ford in order to make up for the height difference and have her appear in the frame with him. Fisher is about a foot shorter than Ford.
* Actually, I can, but they're not on YouTube.
The Exhibitionist: Indiana Jones and the Lost Art of the Serial

Remember serials? I don't, because I'm too young, and by the time I began going to the movies, it was already the practice for cinemas to stick to single, self-contained, feature-length fare. With the way screenings are arranged today, scheduled so that both theater owners and studios can get as much money from as many showings as possible, there's just no room for any accompanying shorts, especially the kind that don't end in a conclusive manner.
I'd probably be okay with being left out of that experience from the moviegoing past, but each time another Indiana Jones movie is released, I can't help but think I'm at least a little less appreciative of George Lucas' intent than some of the older folk in the audience. When Lucas thought up the original Raiders of the Lost Ark, he partly meant the film as homage to the serials he remembered from his childhood.
Yet Raiders didn't end with a cliffhanger, as most serials had on a weekly basis. And with the third sequel to that film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, arriving in theaters this week, I still wonder why at least two installments couldn't have been connected with the serializing device. Lucas had already somewhat shown us, through the uncertain ending of The Empire Stikes Back and continuation/resolution beginning of Return of the Jedi, that it could be done.
