Modine and Laroque Deal with 'The Neighbor'

Filed under: Comedy », Romance », Casting », Scripts »

The city of Angels ... Los Angeles has been a lot of things in film. We've seen the gritty backdrop and gangs, as well as the wining, dining, shopping and deals. Now we're going to get the city all romanticized with Matthew Modine and Michèle Laroque (Ma vie en rose). Yes, Mr. Modine, whose most recent big film was Transporter 2, is going to star with the French actress in her first English-language film -- The Neighbor. It might not be the pair you'd expect, but we also don't think of LA as a city of romance, so there's a first for everything.

The script was written by Fighting Tommy Riley director Eddie O'Flaherty and J.P. Davis, who wrote and starred in the film. Neighbor deals with Modine's Jeff, a man who is headed for a nervous breakdown due to his failing business and some distressing news from his daughter (Joe Mantegna's daughter, Gina Mantegna). She shares that his ex-wife (Meredith Scott Lynn) is marrying his former best friend (David Youse). Jeff's stress is compounded by the real estate developer who moves into the condo below him -- Laroque's Christine, who expected him to move out while she renovates her new home. The tension predictably becomes romantic, but of course, there are further complications -- Christine also has an uptight fiance (Ed Quinn) and troublesome boss (Richard Kind) who enter the equation.

While the film sounds like an amalgam of other ideas, it seems like they're banking on the Los Angeles angle to make it fly. Producer Karen Shapiro told The Hollywood Reporter: "The script has intelligence and heart and showcases Los Angeles in a new light. The gorgeous, romantic L.A. skyline and the revitalized downtown district with its loft condos are key elements of the film." Does that spin really make it seem fresh? The plot above brings to mind a number of films and television shows (*cough* Grey's Anatomy *cough*), what does it remind you of?

Dimension Double Dips with Project Greenlight Writers

Wow, so it looks like The Weinstein's and Dimension Films have finally found something they like out of this whole Project Greenlight fiasco. The company has gone ahead and picked up not one, but two scripts from writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan, the scribe duo behind Greenlight's last winner, Feast.

The first is called Midnight Man, in which Dunstan (as new as he is to the business) has negotiated a deal to direct. The story will focus on a man who finds himself in the middle of a kidnapping situation after breaking into the home of his employer. The second is a thriller titled The Neighbor, and it did not come along with a description. However, I imagine someone will discover the crazy person who lives next door, with thrilling and unfortunate consequences. Feast opened in theaters this past weekend (to favorable reviews) and its DVD hits streets on October 17.
